It was cold. That was the only thing Katie felt as she walked through darkened halls. If she could actually see, she was certain there'd be snow, or ice, and for a second she thought Seth would love it there. He wouldn't have to even bother keeping his body temperature up or anything. A scowl crossed her face at the thought of the boy, though, and she shoved the notion out of her head. She wasn't here to think of old rivals; she was here to bargain with the Devil.
Well, maybe not the Devil. But close enough in her book.
The final set of doors were tall, that much she could tell from the thin line of light coming from the cracks. With a deep breath, she pushed them open, wincing slightly. Her eyes took a while to adjust, which was fine. It wasn't as though she had anywhere to be, and they didn't really hurt. Nothing really hurt, not anymore.
"You are tenacious, aren't you?" Katie blinked, her eyes unable to focus on the man standing before her. His voice slid through her, into her brain and quickly back out, leaving her wondering if she'd really heard what he'd said, or if it was all just imaginary. A chuckle sounded throughout the room, and the figure was gone before Katie could even blink.
"Okay, this has got to stop."
"But it's just starting. Besides, you're the one who sought me out, not the other way around." There was a pause, as though he were waiting, then a sigh. "Well, get to it. You obviously are here on Peter's behalf."
"Wait, you already - " She was cut off by a loud, dramatic sigh.
"Yes, I already know. It's my job to know. Do keep up. Anyway, Faraday wants to give Amber a second chance, you agree with him, yada yada, all the mushy feelings. Am I right, or am I right?" Though she couldn't see it, Katie could almost feel the smirk in his tone.
"You're a bit of a cunt, you know that?"
"Yup. Now, let's get on with it... Would you like to formally ask, or shall I just assume you're fine with Peter's terms?"
"I guess. Amber gets a second shot... That's it, isn't it?" There was tutting, and for a second Katie felt ire bubble within her. She wasn't a child, and she didn't come down here to be treated like one.
"You really are something else, Miss Worthington. See, I get nothing out of that deal." There was a second of hesitation, and when he spoke again she could hear the barely restrained rage. "See, there's someone who's been... irksome. Someone I need dealt with, who I can't quite touch."
"Oh no...."
"Oh yes. Amber is quite acquainted with Rion Nowak already. It shouldn't be too hard for her to off the boy for me. Once he's in my realm, I can do with him what I wish. Until then, my hands are tied."
"That's not - "
"That's the agreement, take it or leave it." Katie thought about it, then sighed, hanging her head.
"Fine. You win. Rion dies, she lives."
"Perfect! Now, off you go! I have things to set in motion to make the most of this whole thing." Before she could get in another word, she felt herself moving out the door. It shut behind her with a resounding thud, leaving her with the dim sensation that she was missing something important.
"See, I knew it would be a win/win scenario, Mr Faraday. Amber comes back for Katie, you send your niece and Katie back for second chances, and I get the little twerp all for myself once they hold up their end of the bargain." There was silence, but that didn't matter. Instead, he retreated to his throne and poured himself a glass of wine. After all, it had been a long day getting what he wanted, and he deserved a little bit of relaxation.
I... Nothing. She's been dead for two years, everything I could come up with requires her to still be somewhat fresh. I mean, all the tricks I used were done on the cusp, not after two years.
Some effort? We have to find a way of talking to the bloody Grim Reaper, Peter! And then get him agree to give Amber a second chance! I mean, for fucks sake, do you really think for a second that this is a good plan?
The joys of not having any familial relation to Ms. High and Mighty and her husband, Scrooge. I have an idea. We’d have to get to Death himself and have a little chat. How one goes about making an appointment for that sort of thing is beyond me.
If this is the bit where I’m supposed to channel my inner Karen and pretend to give a shit, I’m checking out.

I never said you did. I just said you’d be shouldering the same burden of being annoyed to no end by them for the rest of eternity if we go through with this. But I think that’s a consequence we’re both willing to go through with by the looks of it.
It suits me. There’s really no room for any other facade with me. Yet you try your best to not have these feelings. But unfortunately we’re all human and caring is a side effect of such.
It's less that I'm willing to go through it and more of I literally can't find ways to care less about what they think. I stopped caring a while ago. Apparently we are. I take it you have a plan?
Speak for yourself. The only feelings I try not to have are... different.
