It must be bad, right? That person let Shannon take over the pleasantries, voice soft and calm and soothing, and while she did and while she walked she watched her. Jessica was rough and dirty and disheveled. She stank. She smelled like Kinzo’s study did, once, though not as fetid-rotting. It wasn’t a pleasant reminder. 

Even in her current state, it hurt to say that. Even now, it hurt to hear what Shannon said. Obscene. Crass. She'd been called that plenty recently, hadn't she? A great impression she'd made on the exact family members she swore to take care of!

But Shannon was kind. Shannon was caring. She took care of Jessica and did her best for Jessica's sake. That's how it was. And Shannon was a lie. Sayo was a person, a murderer, a liar, a relative. Sayo was using that mask to get through the day.

Jessica hiccuped. Being drunk was not nearly as fun as movies and stories made it out to be. It just burned her throat to drink and made her feel dizzy.

"Nn, none of that matters, Syo... it's all fuckin' gone now. It's, it's all... I... I ruined erything..."

The tears came back up in preparation for what she was about to say.

"I don't jus' want you. I, I tried to fuck Rosa oba-san... I want her, too."

And it was a failure, of course. Why would she ever go for that? The point wasn't even to expect success, but rather, to validate her self-loathing. To be rejected and given a dirty look and shut out. Wouldn't it be just as awful to lie to her and pretend like it was possible to have a healthy relationship with her, when she was clearly a lustful cretin?

"Yer the only one that'd ever want me, y'know...? Even after everything... even after shooting me in the fucking head... you're the best I could ever do. I really, really love you... I don't even know if I deserve you anymore..."

A movie; now that was a decent suggestion. Movies had really developed since their first start as silent films – the witch found it interesting how humans could develop so much on their own. It was their own form of magic, even. Jessica’s sudden enthusiasm only lifted Beato’s spirits more.
