Framing for Final Piece 

I have decided that the framing will be quite an important aspect within my work. This is because it relates back to my initial tutorial and discussion with Dan and Steve right at the start of the module. We discussed what the most important facets were within Boyd’s exhibition; Art vs Artefact and portraying of the value using design and layout within museums and galleries. 

‘The gold frame’ is almost a metaphor for something else; it depicts what galleries are about. You can see them in modern art galleries and in museums showing traditional paintings for example as shown in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery front round hall. Once the gold frame is positioned around a piece of work it gives it an automatic step up on its previous outlook of value all through first sight. 

Although this is very different to how Boyd portrayed his work; it is taking a step away from that; particularly in terms of giving an extra value to something which is hand-made. 

The etching of foil will be put into this frame and it works perfectly with the colour of the etching work being gold too. 

I started by choosing a frame which was alike to many of the frames I have found in research and alike to what I wanted the overall image to be. I then found the right kind of tone of gold spray paint for the frame as it was originally white. The idea to use spray paint was so that I could achieve a perfect even colour and make sure that the paint didn’t crack.

The final outcome is perfect and exactly the right colour and overall effect I want it to give to the whole room.

These are my images which have been scanned in and manipulated in photoshop in order to get the correct filter to create an older looking print.

I had to match up the colours exactly while creating in inDesign, but then switched over to photoshop, and after back to inDesign! inDesign worked the best for me in terms of perfecting a final piece and editing the images perfectly in the right layout to be able to print.

Music collections of original machines which started some of the most famous ways to listen and create music. One of the first jukebox created in Germany. Collated a number of different music types which were played from two enormous speakers located in the bottom of the machine.

Jeremy Deller and Alan Kane - Folk Archive - The History of The World

Jeremy Deller Began the Folk Archive in 1999, a 'celebration of subjectivity' collated of works over 6 years developed by many types of people; teenagers, the homeless, prisoners, communities and protesters. 

This particular piece - The History of This World - engages with traditional culture while he works alongside a traditional brass band, presented live and on CD where the musicians played acid house tracks. 

What I enjoy most about this idea is the complete clash of traditions, yet they are still both just that; traditions. They both have their own separate principles but collaborating them in this way brings the old and new together as well as the interaction of the distinct cultures which makes it a lot more interesting.

Aboriginal X-ray Art

Such art work has been created by the Aboriginal people for countless generations. It has been considered a traditional style for such people in order to explain stories and animals through anatomical features. 

The very first people of Australia painted on rocks thousands of years ago. Instruments such as hair-like bristles found in plants were used for fine detail. 

The idea of x-ray stems from thousands of years ago.

Maentis

Maentis have been a favourite of mine within art societies creating variations of famous pieces such as the 'march of progress'.

These images are so comical in a political, satirical kind of nature. And I really want to re-create this outlook and overview with my work.

The march of progress was an original idea of mine after following the idea of a physical form and how it has progressed through the ages through our body structure. But this particular finding has re-iterated that this is the path I want to follow to completing my final piece.

In particular; I find the most relatable image being the gender-orientated 'march of progress' as initial thoughts of the beginning of time and the 'march of progress' image is based around the male figure. 

Incorporating my idea of fashion being the object in question for my project would reiterate the female based importance.

Sexism isn't the prior nor main base for my final piece but fashion is arguably female dependant. ----> refer to next post for final design idea

Module Evaluation

Overall, I believe that my development for 4107 has progressed. To begin with I fell a little to a halt as I fell ill in hospital and in general; the tasks were very open and vague... very useful in most ways. However I felt that there were so many different paths to follow. In particular with Verisimilitude and Utopia centred work. After the first 3 or so weeks I managed to get into a routine of research, practise and record. The tumblr process was also really hard and uncomfortable to tailor to also; but I got into the procedure and it became a lot more easy.

If I could've done something a little different within my work, I would've revisited artists such as Juan Gris and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner to add in most aspects of their work.

4107 - Utopia

Final Piece

While trying to incorporate the idea of everyday life with Utopia, each step and development has proven how well the two subjects work together. These elements being the story of Adam and Eve and Utopia itself.

The tree is used as a connotation for the real descent of possible utopia to dystopia. The Utopia creates a very fake, kitsch feel also with the child- like toys which is perfect for the idea of the Utopia not being achievable. The uneasy stillness of the photos adds to the sense of 'falseness'. 

The bottom of the tree being the Utopia, complete with all the artworks and colours within edits as possible. The top of the tree, being kept simple, bland, dead and lifeless.

Elements I have included:

Snake - serpent (Marzipan, Food colouring)

Apple - temptation (used baubles, old scraps of card)

The new branches of the tree - Extensions (branches removed, brightly painted and added again) as a substitute for the nest.

The knot in the tree - made out of woven materials (Used paper plates, scraps of string, ribbon and materials)

Kite - symbolism of naivety (Adam and Eve) - (Old Film, card, string, ribbon, hanger tags and tissue paper)

I want the tree to look very busy and be something that although cannot be thoroughly interpreted while assessed.. you can still get the feel of the busy utopia into nothingness dystopia.

Artists like Haans and Hahn who inserted Utopia into everyday life inspired me to create such a perfect bottom part to my Utopia, trees are part of everyday life and the Utopia part would certainly cheer up your day.

Obviously the Adam and Eve story highlight the descent into evil and how it will never be again achievable in my personal views. But we are very naive and uneducated to believe that it may be achievable (just like Adam and Eve were). They represent the start of all humanity; of pure and innocent beings whom are untouched by other harsh realities of the 'real world'. However, the serpent as we know, didn't allow the garden of Eden to be tranquil.
