American Girl Best Friends Aesthetics: The quiet, careful, and even-tempered Elizabeth Cole finds herself to be an odd match to the fiery and ill-mannered Felicity Merriman. Like her friend, she enjoys horses, reading, and being outdoors, and unlike her friend, she has quite the knack for sewing! But when revolution starts to tear neighbors apart, Elizabeth isn’t sure how to feel; torn between her Loyalist family and her Patriotic best friend.
"I'm here. It's me," she whispered to Penny. "You don't have to trust me yet. But you will. I know you will."

When Addy Walker escaped slavery with her mother and arrived in Philadelphia, she didn't know how to read or write. She had never even seen her name written down. But when she started attending school, she very quickly learned to write and spell words, and in only a few weeks became a better reader than children who had been reading for years and years, like her classmate Harriet. Soon, Addy was teaching her mother to read.
Addy learned so quickly, in fact, that her teacher Miss Dunn noticed her aptitude, and recommended her for admission into the Institute for Colored Youth. Attending the ICY would train Addy to be a teacher, and would give her the chance to be educated on a broad range of subjects.
Addy's story is fiction, but the ICY was a real place founded in 1837 to training students for various trades and careers, before eventually moving its focus specifically to teacher training.
Addy is wearing the Striped Dress from her retired collection; it's associated with her short story "High Hopes for Addy", which features and illustration of her wearing the dress. The desks are off-brand replicas. I made her school satchel and supplies.
Right, everyone who's old enough to remember this thing, raise your hands.
I coveted this traveling kit for years before I finally got it. In fact, I finally was given it at the store in Chicago (my mother took me and a friend down there by train a few times, since it only took four or five hours). It was after it had been formally retired, turns out, and I must've gotten the last one at the store, because I remember the staff went to check in back for one and then ended up giving me the one on display by the return desk! I don't know if it had just been returned or what, but it's one of my most treasured American Girl items now.
I used to bundle a specially chosen doll just like this, any time I brought them anywhere. Usually round to my nana's house for the weekend. I'd make sure to bring enough clothes, as well as their nightgown and slippers, and tuck all their accessories in that little ditty bag. Then off I'd go with the basket in arm.

Original American Girl Felicity Doll by Pleasant Company
the benbunny household has moved! my situation is too temporary at the moment to be worth setting up all my dolls, but I had to have at least one room to play with. Diana seemed the obvious choice — not only was she the doll that got me back into dolls and my buddy while I was at college, she’s also at the point in her story where she’s moving to Paris for finishing school! So this shelf is now her dorm room there :)
Moved a few weeks ago, I finally got the girls on their display!
The Sams are having a little ice cream treat. BeForever Sam is on the left, White Body Sam is center and 35th Sam is on the right.
american girl doll story conflicts these days be like "this girl has a supportive family and best friend and expensive hobby......BUT can she do her hobby AND another hobby?? and can she. Shine?? 🤔"
Everyone's wearing their springtime best on the bookshelf. :)
I bought Kit and now I have all the historical girls that I grew up with seeing in the catalogs. (Kaya and Samantha are at my parents'. I need more display space!)
Happy 258th Birthday, Felicity Merriman!
i love these tiny outfits that have all these layers! here’s kirsten in her drawers and winter flannels (a petticoat and undershirt), then her shirt and skirt, then with boots and socks, sweater, hat, and mittens
Coming soon to the podcast!
Felicity stepped into the shadowy store lit by a few flickering candles. She called out, “Hello! Hello!”
“Hello, yourself!” answered a cheery voice. It was Ben, Mr. Merriman’s apprentice. He was up on a ladder, dusting high shelves. He grinned down at Felicity. “This is a fine surprise,” he said. “Have you come for a whistling lesson?”
“Not this time,” laughed Felicity. “Where’s Father?”
