I legit love that they bothered to do this and show how massive the size difference between the transformations are!
For those who dont know, in the manga one of the reasons why Ranma struggles when they have to fight in their girl form is that the difference in height legit screws with them when they want to calculate the distance for a kick or the like.
I know this is probably not going to happen but I really want a scene where someone like Cecilus or a (fully-fledged) Sin Archbishop or some other inhuman monster learns about Subaru’s RBD and turns around to demand “What the fuck is wrong with you??” in front of everyone. We already got this with Louis Arneb and Reid Astrea in Arc 6 but can you imagine what witnessing that would do to Anastasia? To Vincent?? It would be amazing. Bonus points if Subaru responds to questioning about this with the same nonchalant non-answers he’s been using to respond to those about everything else before casually and unthinkingly moving on to the next topic with zero explanation. Peak comedy.
We don’t talk enough about how badly Subaru curb-stomped Petelgeuse in that last loop. Like yeah, from our POVs it’s the accumulation of several lives worth of effort and information-gathering, hard-won and deeply scarring on several different occasions — but from anyone else’s POV Subaru completely slaughtered him. There wasn’t a single casualty on their end. He knew exactly where he’d be. He baited him and then dragged him off and then instructed Julius on how best to beat his ass like it was nothing. Petelgeuse was on the wrong foot the entire goddamn time. He didn’t get a single win in that fight, he just ate shit from beginning to end. He basically showed up for another day of Gospel-predicted work and then some rando pissed him off, lured him into a trap he’d set up for his new friend to beat him into the dirt, spat on his love for the Witch, crushed his head, and then burned him to death when his disfigured corpse chased after him in a desperate bid to do something about whatever the fuck had just happened. He screeches Subaru’s name as his final words, and like — look, Subaru’s got a good fucking reason to be fighting this guy, but Petelgeuse didn’t know that. From his perspective this random asshole showed up and chose violence for Od knows why.
And for everyone else — no WONDER they see Subaru as some sort of incomprehensible witch cult fighter. Forget winning against an Archbishop, this man DESTROYED that fucker. Absolutely demolished him. Petelgeuse didn’t stand a chance in Hell. And they JUST watched Subaru get the crap beaten out of him so, like, WHAT. And Subaru has no intention of explaining how he knows any of this. He doesn’t even realize how suspicious he is. He’s just doing his thing, as if this is NORMAL, and somehow that’s the most unnerving part. Fucking Hell outsider POV Subaru is so great.
Also combine this with the fact that one of the biggest reasons why the cult is so feared is because of their ability to use their Gospels to predict the future — especially Petelgeuse, who has followed that thing to a T. This means that Subaru just AMBUSHED (and subsequently tore to shreds) an enemy that has been able to predict their every movement for centuries. How the HELL did he do that? Subaru even says at one point, “You’re about to learn just how terrifying it is to face an enemy that’s always one step ahead,” and — yes, Subaru, that IS terrifying :) and his only explanation is “it’s a little trade secret :)” and just — ??????
And even for those who do figure it out, the answer is even weirder, because Subaru didn’t even fucking appear in their Gospel, apparently??? What the fuck is THAT supposed to mean????? Can the cult not track him, is he dodging it somehow — was he purposefully created by the world as a natural enemy to the cult, even? He doesn’t seem surprised by this at all, he just dismisses it like “yeah whatever,” but that’s actually a really big deal. And again — Petelgeuse must have been so unbelievably confused by this whole situation. For him this must be the equivalent of someone breaking the laws of physics right in front of you and the declaring themselves your enemy.
The whole situation gets worse and worse the more you know. At first he just seems like a particularly good war leader with a very eccentric personality and the worst mood swings you’ve ever seen, and then you learn that he outsmarted an enemy that was able to predict the future, and THEN you learn that he in part managed that because they LITERALLY could not track HIM SPECIFICALLY — WHO THE HELL ARE YOU????
Imagine if Subaru lost his memories in Priestella instead of the Juukulius brothers losing their name/name and memories respectively. Do you remember how fucking adorable Subaru was during those first two loops in the Watchtower when he was just trying his best. Playing “starving orphan boy” with his food, calling his self-described rival “Julius-san,” trying to flirt with Emilia before immediately cowering in fright when she responds way too enthusiastically, casually opening a very dangerous book of the dead and getting yelled at like a misbehaving toddler by everyone in the room —
He gets attacked by Gluttony and wakes up with Emilia and Betty, and it goes about the same as it does in canon, with him catching on to their worry and immediately trying to raise their spirits. He acts just as he normally does and then they get very painful whiplash when he asks for their names please.
He is very nervous when he’s immediately introduced to everyone as an amnesiac because they. They look pretty scary. He tries to joke around, and it falls flat because the only known person to defeat a Sin Archbishop suddenly contracting amnesia right after an attack is bad news.
When he first talks to Julius post-amnesia he calls him “Julius-san” in front of everyone. As Julius has not lost his name in this version of events, everyone has to immediately fight back their laughter. Julius is incredibly creeped out. Ferris jumps in before he can ask Subaru to please just talk normally, and now Subaru is treating Julius respectfully and. It is so weird. If they When they get his memories back, nobody is ever going to let him live this down.
Subaru might have a bit of a crush on Julius, just like he did Emilia when he met her for the very first time. He’s trying not to acknowledge this but it’s even more obvious now than it was when he still had his memories.
He tries to flirt with Emilia at one point. Emilia flirts back way too hard and Subaru nearly trips over himself in fright (might even end up falling into the river lmao) because he did NOT expect that, and now he’s a little scared of her. Someone comments about this being sad to watch and Subaru gets embarrassed thinking that they’re talking about his attempt to flirt with her and not his rejection of her reciprocation. Ferris comforts Emilia about this development a bit later.
They stay in Priestella with the other camps to help with reconstruction.
Someone tells him he’s a servant, kind of joking due to his status as Whale/Rabbit/Archbishop Slayer, but he doesn’t catch on and is immediately is like “okay :)” and starts obediently going off to help with servant tasks as Emilia and all the others watch with sad looks on their faces. This is especially heartbreaking to everyone who watched him prematurely declare himself a knight about a year ago.
Someone tries to tell him he was a knight and he laughs hysterically because he thinks it’s a joke before catching on that they thought he’d actually believe it and scolding them for telling such an obvious lie, because come on, he’s not THAT stupid. They don’t try to convince him again. It’s a little too painful.
He’s terrible at chores. He forgot how to do all of them, except for sewing — which is adorable because it gives the impression that he was practically born a doll-maker. The others have to teach him everything else from scratch, but he works hard and eventually gets alright at it again.
He is also now illiterate. This is when everyone learns that the Emilia Camp had to teach him how to read and write. This explains a few things.
He is very embarrassed about this because hasn’t he been doing these things for a year?? And everyone else has so much on their plates already, what right does he have to add to it all like this…
Julius starts teaching him how to read and write. This only furthers Subaru’s impression of him as “Julius-san.” It also does nothing to help the fact that Subaru is developing a crush on him.
He’s kind of scared of Wilhelm, who always looks like he’s out for revenge against someone who just murdered his grandson or something.
(Subaru no longer has the look of a dead man in his eyes. Is that a curse or a blessing in disguise? Wilhelm doesn’t like the fact that he can’t immediately answer that question.)
Reinhard always looks super guilty all the time, like some sort of kicked puppy. Subaru is just as friendly with him now as he was when they first met. This gives everyone the impression that Subaru has no sense of self-preservation because anyone in their right mind would be at least a LITTLE nervous.
Garfiel is devastated. Where did his Captain go?? Subaru and he get along pretty well, mainly because Garfiel isn’t trying to kill him this time around, but — where’s Captain???
Otto. Is kind of okay with this. It’s not IDEAL, but — he can work with this. Controlling little bastard <3
Roswaal is not okay with this. He shows up in Priestella FAST when he gets the urgent letter saying that Subaru lost his memories. Subaru thinks he’s a funny clown man. Julius whacks him on the head when he calls him a clown the first time he sees him. The Emilia Camp is very much not willing to leave this dumb, inept version of Subaru alone with their very suspicious sponsor.
All in all, things go alright for the first month. Subaru is a dumb shit, but he’s helping with repairs and he’s more emotionally aware right now than it was in season one because like, he knows that the people around him are tense. It’s rocky, but it’s fine. And he’s distracted by work, so he doesn’t have to think about his parents or his home, and so he’s okay too.
If you had to write Subaru crossdressing post arc 8 at a birthday ball of some random noble or something how would you do it
!! I’ve actually had an idea about this, believe it or not —
Okay so if I were to write about this sort of thing it would be all about the Character Interactions babeyyyyy which means I’m dragging in all Subaru’s friends from other camps who have never met Natsumi Schwartz. Subaru is a little shit who initially panics at the thought of them clocking him publicly before realizing that they don’t know and deciding that he is not going to say shit, and also he’s going to have so much fun. Some of them figure it out quicker than others.
Ferris figures it out instantly. He doesn’t tell anyone because he wants to see what happens. He’s also kind of ecstatic to not be the only crossdresser at this event for once. He might get into some kind of catty fight with Schwartz over the quality of their makeup.
Reinhard almost blows Subaru’s cover instantly due to his Divine Protection of Facial Recognition. Ferris manages to stop him just before he does this.
Julius may not have figured it out if only Subaru wasn’t such a little bastard towards him all the time, or even just a little bit better at hiding it. As it is, he catches on that this is Subaru the moment Schwartz opens her mouth to respond to his polite attempt at small talk with one of the most bitingly sarcastic retorts he’s ever heard.
Al already met Schwartz in Vollachia and does not know how to feel about seeing her again. He thought that was a one-time thing. Apparently it is not.
Otto and Garfiel are right there with him — in spirit, at least. They are not going to let anyone know that this is Subaru. Otto in particular is extremely on edge as he tries to keep an eye out for anything that might bust him — until he drinks enough alcohol, anyway.
They both resigned themselves to the fact that Schwartz was not going anywhere that one time they all went to an event as women together. They’ve accepted this.
Schwartz flirts with Otto at one point, just to tease him (and also trying to get him to loosen up). Otto really does not know how to handle this. Garfiel is cackling.
Wilhelm does not figure it out. He’s having a lot of fun watching the younger men flirt with the young black-haired woman with the other senior knights from across the room.
Speaking of which, Schwartz is canonically a MASSIVE flirt, especially with men. She is having the time of her life at this event. Everyone who’s realized that this is Subaru is just Watching. They have never seen this side of him before.
At one point he decides to flirt with his fellow knights, just for the hell of it. They have multiple conversations throughout the night due to everyone mingling and having fun, so he has plenty of chances.
Ferris responds very enthusiastically and is having a lot of fun. They flirt several times over the course of the event, kind of like a competition. At one point they team up against other unsuspecting guests.
Reinhard doesn’t realize that Schwartz is flirting and also flirts back hard without even meaning to. He doesn’t even realize what he’s doing. Schwartz is impressed and also quite flustered.
Al groans and buries his helmet in his hands. What the hell is happening.
Julius takes it as the challenge that it is, because everything’s a challenge for Subaru when it comes to Julius, and he flirts back HARD. He is the only one who manages to leave him speechless for the entire night. Schwartz eventually manages to mumble out a quiet “shut up” with cheeks as red as an appa. Julius presses a little further with a smile like a used car salesman and eventually manages to chase Schwartz off completely, steam rising from her face. It’s the funniest part of the night.
Schwartz and Wilhelm do talk at one point when they meet by the buffet. Wilhelm mildly mentions that she reminds him of Subaru and Schwartz almost chokes on her food.
Emilia either doesn’t know and is happy that her friend Schwartz could attend alongside her, or she does know and she is silently watching her knight have the time of his life as he seduces half the men in the room.
And then there’s also the question of why he’d be crossdressing at this event in the first place. In which case, I can think of two options:
1) This is “Womanizer” Zikr Osman’s event and he specifically invited Natsumi. This is absolutely something I can see him doing.
This probably means all the Vollachian nobles are there too.
Vincent is probably pretty cool about it actually. Despite being the Vollachian Emperor he is canonically one of the more progressive members of the cast when it comes to crossdressing. And honestly I don’t think any of his batshit insane generals would have much of an issue with it either. Ceci is just like “Boss is wearing a funny outfit haha! The audience will love this!”
Vincent probably has some opinions, however, on how Subaru is successfully seducing everyone in the room. Of all the people they could be won over by, this insolent, bratty, probably-somewhat-insane disaster of a human being is what does it?? That’s so concerning.
2) Subaru specifically was banned by the noble running this event (because its Subaru and he probably did something to insult them, let’s be real here) but he still has to accompany Emilia and so he decides to sneak in as his feminine alter ego instead.
Emilia almost definitely knows it’s him in this case.
He is making a much more active effort to hide his identity but it doesn’t make much of a difference tbh
Julius nearly has a heart attack when he realizes what Subaru is doing.
Otto is having a heart attack for pretty much the entire night.
Subaru knows he has to hide his identity but he can’t resist the call to be a little shit around his friends. This is his downfall: as stated above, they all figure it out by the end of the night.
Another option of is that Subaru did not plan to come to this ball as Natsumi Schwartz at all, but then there was some sort of series of shenanigans and now he’s dressed in woman’s clothing and filling in for the performers that were supposed to show up and he has no idea how he got here. Neither do any of his friends, who all nearly have a seizure when he steps onstage.
Or perhaps he DID plan to come as Natsumi, but he was being paid to come as some sort of performer and he had no idea what event exactly he was being commissioned for until he looks into the crowd and realizes “wait I recognize half these people” and — fucking hell that would be hysterical.
Anyway: lots of options, lots of opportunities for good ol’ character interactions, Natsumi Schwartz is the best.
Subaru’s Royal Selection Incident is so fascinating because it is just constantly being recontextualized, over and over and over again. Like, in the beginning when Subaru’s still kinda just serving the role of A Generic Isekai Self-Insert and hasn’t really differentiated himself from the crowd too obviously yet, it comes across as him being an Isekai Fanboy with entitlement issues due to genuinely seeing himself as the center of the world, and the story uses that in order to give a really strong lesson about the dangers of projecting escapism onto others and the pitfalls of feeling entitled to those around you. And it works! It’s a really strong self-contained lesson that has hit home for a lot of young boys/people who remember being young boys who made similar stupid mistakes.
But then both Rem’s Speech and Subaru’s First Trial happen, and it’s recolored as Subaru specifically trying to deal with his depression, self hatred, and feelings that he hasn’t done anything to measure up to who he’s supposed to be, and instead of it just being his selfishness it’s him trying to assert himself as a bigger, better person than who he feels he was in his old life without putting in any of the legwork that he actually needs to get to that point. It wasn’t really entitlement, it seems — it was him trying, or attempting to try, to be the person he thought he was supposed to be, to fulfill the role he thought he was supposed to fill, and fucking up majorly because of a fundamental self-centered misunderstanding of himself and the world around him. There are still elements of entitlement, but it’s more complicated.
AND THEN we get Amnesiabaru in Arc 6, and Subaru is — totally different than what we might have expected. This is a Subaru faced with everything Arc 3 Subaru seemed to expect from an Isekai fantasy: unbridled respect from his peers, a whimsical adventure in a faraway tower, a colorful cast of friends who see him as one of their most valuable members — he even gets a beautiful woman clinging to his arm and calling him “Master” as she attempts to make a move on him every ten minutes. It’s everything Subaru might have thought he wanted back then, but now he has it and he HATES it. He’s deeply uncomfortable with Shaula’s advances to the point where Meili feels the need to step in at one point and drag her away from him, he startles away in fright when Emilia responds to his flirtation attempt by immediately offering him a lap pillow and stutters out something about it being “a bit rushed,” he mentally responds to every comment about his value to the team with “yeah, right.” This isn’t an entitled boy who expects to be the main character out of nowhere, he’s completely different. And that means that the Arc 3 incident HAS to have been something resulting from Arcs 1 and 2, because Amnesiabaru’s attitude makes it so obvious that it wasn’t there from the start. And from there it is very easy to conclude that his tantrum was actually a total breakdown, because he had been using the fantasy of being a hero to hide from the realities of RBD and the things that the people he loves had done to him during his past lives, and once his coping mechanism was shattered — because of COURSE it was, it was a terrible coping mechanism and a flimsy way to paint the world as Not Real so that he didn’t have to face it — the only thing he could think to do was lash out and cling to what remained the best he could.
And then we get Natsumi Schwartz and suddenly that incident has a whole new layer of him repressing his “ideal self” in order to present himself as a Hero and a Man in order to fill the role he had decided to pretend was there in order to avoid thinking about the painful and traumatizing world as anything other than a story. It just keeps getting more layers.
