Just doodles!!11!! Yuri Carmeo! I'm drop this on March 8th, so to all the wonderful women, happy International Women's Day!!!!
Reading about how, in the 19th century/Victorian era, the male lover of a gay man was often said to be a "dear friend" or "like a brother" to him to cover up the nature of their relationship:
Alright.
Even Adrian and Vincent from the Adrian Mayfield/Green Flower trilogy - very good historical novels set in the 1890s (and sadly not available in English) - literally call each other "best friends", even when they're among themselves.
Though I wanna say that these phrases were probably used for the lack of appropriate terms (or terms that weren't derogatory). There wasn't really a way of saying "gay lover", much less a socially acceptable one ("gay" only came to refer to homosexuality specifically over the course of the 20th century), so they just went with the next best thing.
Actually, 19th-century gay love was all about concealing the nature of the actual thing: As long as you didn't say it out loud, as long as there was some degree of ambiguity, people were willing to turn a blind eye (or at least keep it at a raised eyebrow) - nobody could judge what happened behind closed doors. The gay subcultures of the time actually had their own, codified way of communication, conventions, and dress. So, you could actually be gay in the 19th century - all you had to do was keep it secret and lie about it. (And ohhh, I'm licking my fingers here about just how well this fits into the overall theme of Lies of P.)
