Chan looked up from his computer and he saw you entering your shared house. Chan watched you take off your shoes and put your keys inside a key box near the entrance. He looked back on his computer and bit the inside of his cheeks.
You ignored him and flopped on the couch in front of him and whined. Chan chuckled and kept typing for his presentation for work. You massaged your back and you closed your eyes. You grabbed for your purse and took a piece of pain reliever patch and patched it on your shoulder. You stood up and went to the kitchen to grab a glass of water to drink.
You looked outside the window of your kitchen and saw your backyard. You smiled bittersweetly and you felt a sharp pain in your heart. You wanted this house to be field of laughter of your children and romance of you and your husband. Husband that you deeply love, not just someone who your grandparents marry you off to.
You frowned and you washed the glass that you used. Asking yourself why did you grandparents even had to interfere with your love life. Cursing your parents why did they even agreed to that idea and wanting to sob on the thought of you marrying someone you don’t know and love.
It’s like cheating and lying to yourself, and Chan. You saw Chan as a sweet guy, he doesn’t deserve to be lied to, at all. You turned around and walk to the living room and saw Chan at the same spot, same position, in front of his computer typing. You sighed and sat on the couch and read the nearest book you can grab.
After a while, you felt your back aching again and you laid down and put the book on your stomach. “Fuck.” You said and massaged your back again, for the nth time today.
Chan peeked up and saw you groaning and looking uncomfortable. Chan put his laptop down and he walked to the bathroom and got a hot pack and a massage ointment and walked towards you.
He tapped you and you looked at him with one eyebrow up. “Lemme help you out,” You didn’t complain and just sat up gently while he helped you up. You turned around and he helped you take off your shirt.
This was nothing new to you, he seen you naked and you seen him naked, though you never touched each other. He unhooked your bra while you were holding and covering your chest in case someone walks in.
He pressed the hot pack on your back gently and put massage ointment on your back and massaged it. While massaging it you felt sensation and pain at the same time. “Ouch, Chan do it gently please.” You said and rotated your head.
“Tch, working hard at the bakery again?” Chan asked you and you sighed. “Yeah, there was a wedding cake order. Exhausting.” You simply said. You tried looking back at him, but you couldn’t.
“Hey Chan, speaking of wedding..” You started. “Hmm?”
“Uhm, I talked to your mom over the phone and she wants to go wedding dress hunting next week, she wants you to come...” You said. He sighed while still massaging your back.
“Sorry, I can’t. I’m busy for a project at the hotel and I can’t miss a day for the next few weeks.” He said, you frowned without letting him see your face. You looked down and you felt bad about yourself.
“Well, My dad wants me to bake our wedding cake and I’d like you to taste test which cake you want in each layer.” You said, “Oh, and the design.” You added.
Chan stopped massaging you and he sighed, deeply this time. “I told you Y/N. I can’t help you for the next few weeks. This has to wait for few more months. My work is important.” His words hit you and you just closed your eyes and pursed your lips.
“Do I have to be present? I mean, it’s your wedding too, you can just decide on your own. I really don’t care what you want to do with the planning, I just can’t help out, honestly.”
You shook your head and put your shirt back on and stood up. “Never mind.” You walked your way to your shared bedroom to take a rest and lay your body down and cool off from irritation.
You were about to enter the bedroom when Chan spoke, “Y/N? I’m sorry but I really just can’t help. The wedding plan just had to be pushed back for few more months then I’ll accommodate with you.”
Your eyes squinted and you looked back at him, “Push back? Chan, I’ve been adjusting and pushing back months ago. This is getting frustrating already.” You said and leaned on the wall. You can barely walk and stand up and the stress in your head is making your body hurt more.
“It’s not my idea to get married, okay? I don’t get it, I just don’t get it. I don’t know why do I have to care for this wedding at all? The design and theme, does it really matter? You’re just marrying me, a stranger, what could be so special about it?” He asked you.
“Everything! Everything has to be special for me.” You were already frustrated. “As much as you didn’t want to get married with me, I didn’t either. I dreamt of living in this house, marrying someone I truly love and have MY children run around this house, I wanted to be happy, too.” You admitted, felt tears pricking your eyes. You looked down.
“I know you don’t care at all, but I do. I want to have my dream wedding, even with the person I don’t know. At least, I want to have my ideal wedding theme and all.” You gave up and you shed tears. You went in your shared bedroom and locked the door.
You sat in front of your vanity mirror and looked at yourself. Feeling bad about your situation, you loudly sobbed, not caring how loud you are crying. You just needed to take it off your chest. You covered you face and tried to sob quietly but you couldn’t.
You went to the bathroom and wiped your tears there and washed your face. You took a minute to calm down and sat on the bathroom floor and hugged your knees, if only you could marry the person you really love, you wouldn’t feel this way.
Getting up from the floor, you unlocked the bedroom door and laid on your side of the bed and snuggled in the blanket.
You closed your eyes and took you phone to look at the design of your dream cake that you sketched. You wanted it to be three tiered cake with white fondant and periwinkle fondant flowers. You dreamt of taking time making the periwinkle fondant flowers one by one and you’d put it yourself on the cake. You also wanted to put a little statue of the bride and groom on top of the tier.
You put your phone away and closed your eyes.
Chan sighed from outside the your bedroom door and scratched his head. He wasn’t expecting you to get mad, he expected that you would just be okay pushing back planning for his work. But you were already too hurt and had enough.
Chan sat on the couch and got his phone. He received a message from your dad.
Your mother and mother-in-law scheduled a wedding dress and suit fitting for you and Y/N, tomorrow at 5 pm at Hwang’s Boutique. See you there. Already let Y/N know!
Chan locked his screen, took his laptop and got up to go to the bedroom. He saw you sleeping peacefully on your side. He sat on the bed, your backs facing each other. He covered his face and rubbed it out of frustration.
He could’ve fought back and said no after the engagement announcement, he could’ve been single with no worried of marrying so someone he doesn’t know. But what could he do? He only agreed to this wedding because of his and your grandparents agreeing on marrying off their grandchildren for the sake of business.
He laid down next to you and he felt you move, so he moved and face too. He was shocked to find out you both are facing each other. Your hair was on your face so he moved your hair to the side. He suddenly felt sad and a sudden ache in the heart stabbed him.
He felt bad for you, your dreams were ruined because of this engagement. He knew that you wanted to live your marriage life, in love and happy. He wanted to try his best to be a good fiance to you but he can’t, he’s not capable to, he didn’t know how to be in love.
The night passed and your back was still aching. You didn’t see Chan next to you and you guessed that he already went his way to the hotel. You got up, went to the kitchen to grab a bowl of cereal since you weren’t feeling to cook.
You were checking your phone when you saw there’s a play of eggs, bacon and toast on the table.
You checked your text messages and saw Chan and your mom texted you.
I cooked you breakfast. Enjoy!
Good Evening darling. Your mom and I set an appointment for your wedding dress and suit fitting at Hwang’s Boutique at 5 pm today. Chan is coming. See you there, love!
Your eyes widened, two things. One, Chan cooked you breakfast. Second, Chan is going to your fitting. You were surprised by the fact that Chan is willing to make efforts for you. Wondering whether is it because of what you said last night, you didn’t want to be a pity party.
You shrugged it off and ate the breakfast and left the house to go to the bakery. You were wearing your uniform and as you got to your bakery, you were greeted by your barista, Felix. “How’s your back?” He asked you while wiping the counter.
“It doesn’t hurt as much, hopefully it wouldn’t kill me anymore.” You said going straight to the back to finish the cake order.
You started making the fondant when the bakery phone rings and you picked it up. “Hi this is White Flower Cafe and Bakery, how may I help you?”
“Hi, I’d like to make an appointment a custom order consultation.” The man on the other end of the line stated.
“Sure. Could you please give me your name and an available date for you?” You asked.
“Yes, uh, its for Christopher Bang.” you heard. Your eyes widened and you startled. “Chan? What the heck? Why are you—“
“I— Uh— Want to make it up to you and plan our wedding...” He quietly said. Your mouth opens and you couldn’t say anything. You weren’t expecting to make efforts sooner after what happened last night.
“Uhm... Sure... So, available date?” you said as you tapped the notebook continuously. “Next week? Friday, 4 pm.” He said and you heard his computer keyboard as he typed.
“Yeah, 4 pm.” he continued. You hummed on the phone and wrote it, “Alright, next week friday at 4 pm. You’re all set, Mr. Bang.” You said, Chan scoffed on the other line.
“Alright, take care. Thank you.” He said and you said the same thing back. You hung up and resumed your business.
Hours have past and it’s almost 5 pm, you bid your farewell to Felix and your other workers. You drove to Hwang’s Boutique and you were immediately greeted by Hyunjin, your bestfriend.
“Y/N! Your parents and in-laws are in the consultation room, they’re waiting for you.” You smiled at him and he guided you to the specific room. You were greeted by your excited parents and future in-laws and they showed you pictures of dressed that they’d like to see you in. You were just entertaining them by having a conversation with them about your job.
“Chan’s not here yet.” Chan’s dad stated as he looked at his hand watch and shook his head. “Give him a few more minutes, he’ll be here.” Your father reassured your in-law. I hope he comes? You wished to yourself.
45 more minutes have passed and your in-laws are already irritated at Chan and your parents just shook their heads. You pulled Hyunjn aside and apologized that Chan’s late and for making Hyunjin and his workers wait.
“Hyunjin, I’m so sorry. Chan, he’s just,” You sighed and looked down, “I don’t think he’s gonna show up, but can you just help us fit a dress right now. I don’t wanna wait for him anymore.”
Hyunjin smiled at you and patted your head, “It’s okay Y/N. Don’t worry about it. C’mon, let’s fit you. It’s almost 6 pm and I want you to have a lot of time picking your dress.” He hugged you and you hugged him back. You were lead to the dresses and this one dress caught your eyes.
It’s a ballgown dress with an off shoulder sleeve, it had a long train. You touched it and your eyes sparkled, you softly smiled and Hyunjin approached you. “It will look beautiful on you.” You looked at him and tilted your head, “You think so?” He hummed and told his assistant to take the dress off the mannequin for you to try on.
You put the dress on and Hyunjin put the veil on your head. Once you saw yourself in front of the mirror, you felt tears stream down your cheeks. “You look fantastic.” Hyunjin held your shoulders and wiped your tears with a tissue. You couldn’t stop looking at yourself.
You immediately thought of Chan. Would he think you’re beautiful too with the dress on? Or would he not care like he usually do? You sniffed and wiped your tears. You stepped outside and your parents and in-law were in awe.
“Darling,” Your future mother-in-law stood up and hugged you. You heard cry in your embraced and you smiled. Your mom cried on your father’s arms.
Mrs. Bang broke the hug and looked at you, from head to toe. “This is incredible, you’re so beautiful.” You smiled at her and said thanks. They took a picture of you and took your measurements so they can alter the dress to perfectly fit you.
Once you were done and changed into your casual clothing, Mr. Bang approached you and tapped your shoulders. “I just want to say I’m sorry. My son didn’t show up today without any notice.” You looked at him and slightly smiled.
“It’s okay, Mr. Bang. I already expected it, he’s a busy person.” You said and bowed at him. You all left the boutique together, bid farewell to Hyunjin and his workers and you head home.
About to park at your garage, you didn’t see Chan’s car. You didn’t mind at all and just went straight to the bathroom to shower.
After a while and you were done showering, you heard Chan’s key being thrown at your living room’s coffee table. You peeked outside your room and you saw drunk Chan on the couch unbuttoning his shirt. You didn’t mind him, walking straight to the kitchen to get some water.
“Hey Y/N,” He called you, you didn’t answer back and just got your water and went back to your room. “Y/N I’m talking to you.”
“What do you want?” You looked back and you saw him smiling widely at you. “How’s the fitting?” He asked you.
You were startled at his audacity to not show up, come home drunk and ask you how did the fitting went. You looked at him confused and you pursed your lips.
“Great.” You simply said, smiled and turned around.
“Sorry I couldn’t go. Me and the department team had to celebrate, our proposal got accepted. Woohoo!” He said and celebrated.
“Woohoo your face.” You said and went in your room.
“What’s wrong now?” He asked irritated. You slammed the door open and started going off.
“You, you are the problem.” You said and pointed your fingers. “Cause I didn’t go?” His cockiness has gotten into you and your eyes widened.
“Well fuck yes! Your parents, my parents, and I waited for almost an hour, Chan! And you didn’t show up, and you know what’s the worst thing. You didn’t let anyone of us know. You just made us look fucking dumb waiting for no one!” You yelled at him.
“What are you gonna do?” You sighed, “Let’s just end this bullshit. That’s what you wanted anyway right? That’s what we wanted.” You said calmly, trying to hold back tears.
“You know I was actually willing to give us a shot. I listened to your lies that you were gonna try making it up to me. But you didn’t. You just wasted my time, you’re wasting my time. I’ll face my grandfather tomorrow and tell him that I want to break the engagement. I can’t get married with you, not to someone who doesn’t care.” You tears streamed down your face and Chan was left speechless. “I’m not a coward, unlike you.” You said and slammed the bedroom door shut.
Took your luggage and packing as much things as you could. That same night you left home to go to your old, small house.
Chan was left in the living room sitting on the floor, staring at no where. Trying to apprehend what just happened. He didn’t want to disappoint you. He didn’t want to disappoint his family. But he didn’t want to be unhappy for the rest of his life
