In Revue Starlight, we see two different endings for Claire and Flora in Starlight.
In the first one, Flora is blinded by the light and falls from the tower, leaving Claire trapped and the two of them separated forevermore. In the second ending, Flora is blinded and falls, but then she ascends the tower once more and reunites with Claire at the top, fulfilling their promise this time.
But there is actually a secret third ending.
In Kaoruko and Futabaâs revue in the movie, it ends with the two of them barreling forward on top of two trucks towards each other. It is very similar to how their last revue ended, with the two of them charging towards each other in a similar straight line.
In the showâs revue, Futaba is blinded by how dazzling Kaoruko had been in the past, and how dazzling she continues to be, and is unable to swing her weapon, so Kaoruko manages to win that revue. In the movieâs revue, Kaoruko is dazzled much the same way and is unable to swing her weapon, so this time Futaba wins the revue.
Only in the movie, this whole thing is happening on top of a very tall building, so after Kaoruko is blinded, she falls, just like Flora.
But this time, Claire, I mean Futaba, is able to hold on to her.
Instead of the two being separated or reunited at the top, this ending has Flora and Claire fall to the bottom of the tower, not quite achieving their promise yet, but still together.
having so many feelings about how Karen and Nana are DIRECT FOILS and I so rarely see ppl discuss it grrrrr
this borderline feels like corn-plating, bc itâs so INCREDIBLY basic shit re: Character Design and observations on an anime that came out in 2018(!!) but Iâm just feeling a lot about revstar bc Iâve rewatched it twice in less than a month, so Iâm reflexively babbling about it to myself.
Nana is Karenâs Wario so much itâs hilarious. Even in the basic anime character key art the foreshadowing is all there. Thereâs a red main character, a blue main character, and a secret yellow main character, Nana, in a trio of the primary colors.
BUT. Thatâs not all.
Nana is ALSO associated with green, by her eyes, her hair ties, and her frog memorabilia. Karen also gets to double dip and has a secondary theme color, hot pink. By doing this, the character designers directly position Nana to be visually and thematically complimentary to both Hikari AND Karen.
Then you have the stage direction for both of them. Nanaâs intro takes place mostly in the dark with only red lasers for her fanfare, to offset her from the rest for the characters whose fanfare lights are blue/white and very lit up. Nanaâs accent âstarsâ are sodium yellow, in contrast to the blue/white of the âstarsâ behind Karen.
Both are driven to win the auditions by their life-changing first experience with Starlight, and a girl who was by their side for it. Karen runs towards the future, because thatâs the only place she can share a stage with Hikariâ Nana chases the past, because she fears a future where they lose their newcomerâs passion.
Lastly, you have the thematic name connections: Karen, a âflower of love,â and âBanana,â a fruitâ a flower wilts and gives way to the treeâs fruit, which will either ripen and be devoured, or rot on the branch and fall.
Anyway. I really like them a lot.
They never made Revue Starlight Gekijouban 2, but they made Uma Musume Beginning of a New Era, which is probably the next best thing.
one of my favourite things in revue starlight is how winning a battle just does not matter.
in the beginning, it's pretty easy - you snooze you loose, your star is knocked down, and it's curtain call. whoever wins also has the emotional and narrative victory.
they start to break this down almost from the start. in episode two, karen comforts junna after beating her, and it brings them closer as friends. in episode 6, "winning" for kaoruko is ultimately secondary to gaining futaba's attention, and the two are chummier than ever after their battle.
hell, hikari's entire existence in the story is after she lost all her brilliance - by all accounts, she shouldn't even be in a condition to participate at all. but she got a second chance to fly to tokyo and to set things right, despite being severely disadvantaged. only when she's able to overcome her doubts and starts believing in her and karen's joint future, her weapon is transformed and upgraded. and of course, karen looses everything as well, but she literally claws her way back into the theater to get her rematch. for a series that tells you from the very beginning that you will loose everything if you don't win, and that there can only ever be one top star, in the end, winning the battle is secondary.
gekijouban really takes this to its extreme; every battle has a very clear winner and loser - but the loser always gains something more. futaba wins, but kaoruko not only gets her bike, but also a promise for the rest of their lifetime. hikari gets her ass beat in like, minute 2 of the performance, but is granted a literal medal and a second chance by mahiru to go do things right, for real this time. nana loses against junna, but what she gains is the brilliance she's been looking for all this time since episode 1. claudine properly defeats maya by simply besting her and knowing her weaknesses, and what does maya lose? exactly nothing - instead, they promise to play another round, and infinite rounds as partners. another promise for a lifetime.
karen dies. the protagonist literally drops dead, no heartbeat, and loses her life on stage and it does not matter in the end. she is stabbed, beaten, costume ripped apart, her body and soul emptied out completely and yet she gains her life and passion back. because it's not about winning or losing. it's about giving it your all, barring your soul to the art and to your partner. that's why the losers don't lose. that's why karen was able to "trick" the giraffe's system in the series, and also why the revues in the movie don't even abide by this system anymore.
i just really like it, and the more i realized that, you can really see the progression of the battles throughout the series.
itâs always âi love youâ and never ânow you are the only one i have eyes forâ or âthe center of the stage is only for one person but you are not alone anymoreâ or âonly i can make you lay everything bareâ or âi wonât rest until i propose and make her heart race tooâ or âonly me, always, forever, you only need to look at meâ or âwhenever you walk ahead, turn aroundâ i shall stretch my hand to youâ or âforever and ever iâd like to cross swords with youâ or âeven though we might clash i still have faith in youâ or âfor heroes there are trials, for saints there are temptations, for me there is youâ
these were all very much just loose warmups to get my ideas down (mainly bc ik if i got too perfectionist id never finish any of them) . but i present you a mishmash of my current obsession with my other obsession. maya and claudine with vodka and daiwa . i mighttt draw more later
i wouldve put them all next to each other but bc i drew them all separately they just do not look proportionate. i have no clue how tall anyone is also n i refuse to check the wikis. no thats a lie i know daiwa scarlet is my height. the others i dont know. please dont tell me i am not asking. i will learn when the time is right
