Steroline was god awful. Stefan literally was with her out of convenience. In season 8 he stopped giving a damn about anything. I don't even think Paul liked that ship. If anything Stefan settled bc he couldn't have Elena. Can't believe the show never addresses his feelings about Damon & his ex. Plus he didn't even bother to say goodbye to his own wife (Caroline) before committing suicide. Lol...You know Plec's tired ass was bicuruosly living thru C.K. bless her soul.
Honestly, the goodbye thing always makes me laugh because it reminds me from a writing perspective just how much of an afterthought SC really was? Like from an old post of mine:
You know what, I don’t think it was the fact that Caroline said that Stefan was her soulmate and Elena and him were epic that set up SC for failure. Besides the fact that Candice and Paul don’t have romantic chemistry and that narratively, Stefan and Caroline did not work well together, what set them up for failure was the constant reminder that SC was not SE
I remember LOL’ing so hard at that and being like fam, you couldn’t even give SC their own picture?
And the fact that SE was constantly haunting SC:
like Elena bore witness to nearly every time an SC scene didn’t work out in Caroline’s favour:
and when every time she had to hear about the SC drama it’s from Caroline’s PoV and it sounds one-sided
while Caroline bears witness to SE just being SE
Narratively speaking, the show continues the thread of Elena being connected to Stefan’s humanity while Caroline is either left out of it altogether:
or is the one dragging him toward his worse impulses:
Julie even indirectly contributes to this in her explanations of 8x11
More subtly, Stefan was intent on leaving town, he wasn’t going to stay for Caroline or for anyone else except Elena:
which is a pattern throughout the show:
Not to mention the little things. Stefan is “courting” Caroline in 6x21 but flirts with Elena in the same episode
In 6x22, Julie says both he and Caroline are saying goodbye to Elena who is ultimately Stefan’s true love:
Julie Plec: They [Stefan and Caroline] are sharing an experience of having to say goodbye to someone they care about [who] ultimately is Stefan’s true love. (source)
Stefan could’ve mentioned his moment with Caroline at the festival but chose his moment with Elena
Stefan’s love for Elena is continuously brought up in season 8
and Elena is the last person he sees before he dies
So, like, in this respect, and all of the other things that have nothing to do with SE like their inability to communicate or ever be a true team, is what set them up to be what they were.
