hey! i'm 15 and rly interested in starting fencing. there's a club near me where i might start beginner classes but since a lot of people start young i'm wondering what your opinions are on someone starting a lot later? i've read that competitions are based on age, not experience so i feel like i'll never be able to get anywhere with the sport :/
This is an age-old question that has troubled many of us, I started fencing when I was about 13 because my high school came to my middle school and showed us how it worked to recruit team members from the incoming freshman class.
This question has appeared on this blog before, and I will give you the same answer I gave then: dead is too late to start fencing. “Getting anywhere with the sport” is entirely what you make it, honestly, If you eat, breathe, and sleep fencing, then you will improve quickly, if you take moderate interest in it, then you’ll improve moderately.
A lot of serious competitions at the national level are based on age, but I assume you’ll probably start at “open” USFA competitions if you’re a member, and those are separated by skill level! Sorry this answer got mad long, It’s like 4AM here and I just woke up lmao, but feel free to hit me with any other questions you may have. :)

This year (2016), the City of Bridgeport-BOE and the City's Athletic Department were directed to make sweeping budget cuts in significant athletic programs to satisfy mandated budget compliance. In doing so, the Central High School FENCING Team was reduced to a ZERO budget however, recently allo...
Y’ALL PLS HELP THESE FOLKS
I was a fencer for the Fairfield High School Fencing team, and these were some of my competitors from Central High School in Bridgeport, CT.
For years they’ve dealt with the BoE cutting their funding despite the fact that each year, they’ve gotten better and more competitive. In spite of the fact that many of them have to share equipment while fencing (some of it not even being actual fencing equipment but just a cleverly devised alternative), none of them have given up their love for the sport. Throughout my high school years, they’ve only gotten better and more competitive (one of their men’s epeeists got second in state my junior year), and their funding has still been slashed.
This year, their budget is literally zero. No money from the state whatsoever. However, they’re allowed to continue operating if they self-fund, but they need a sum of $7000 in order to do that (which is higher than their budget for last year was).
These friendly, dedicated, and driven young fencers deserve to be able to compete. They have almost 30 people in their club, so it’s obvious there’s interest at their school, and with NO funding, these folks can’t keep doing the sport they love dearly.
PLEASE HELP THE BRIDGEPORT CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL FENCING TEAM TAKE BACK THEIR ABILITY TO COMPETE
Please help these guys! I fenced them when I was in high school too, they deserve recognition for their love of the sport!
I love being allowed to stab people without getting arrested. 10/10 would recommend
I would also highly recommend it yes
I got hit in the collarbone for the first time today, rip

I wear glasses and putting the mask on is SO HARD.
10/10 would recommend contact lenses, they are less expensive and much easier to use with fencing masks.

I have no words
I washed my fencing kit but it still doesn’t smell clean :(
It will literally never smell clean if it is a well-loved and used kit
The object of fencing is to build your fence as quickly as possible without letting the house escape
My fencing dummy
I wanted to play a prank and it turned out better and worse than expected. I went to the Dallas NAC in 2012 and before the flight I bought the cheapest blow up sex doll (female) I could get, inflated the thing once I got to my room, put a jacket and mask on it, and it actually looked like a reasonable mannequin. Things went downhill from there. After putting a competing club's Tshirt on the doll and photographing it sans mask with a foil taped to one arm (some duct tape kept things in place) I sent the photo to some of my club mates and got rave reviews. I left that doll stuffed behind the TV in the room, and can only wonder if someone found it after turning on the TV (old school cathode tube that gets hot) and pulled it out. I made sure it was not visible to the maids. Now I have to watch the "Nixon" clip from "Where the Buffalo Roam"...

Fencer Problems #1:
That embarrassing moment when you’re at a tournament and your new body cord falls out of the scoring machine for the 500th time.
Don’t worry Coach, we can hold practice without you, they said. What could go wrong, they said.
(No fencers were harmed in the making of these photos)
