The only way Garrett could possibly describe the pain in his head, if he were asked that is, would be to compare it to taking a Bludger at full speed and then falling straight on to the pitch. He looked as though his face was stuck in a perpetual scowl, glaring and unfriendly, but he wondered if this was truly what death felt like. Wait outside, he'd told Alice, just let me take care of this and don't wander off. Garrett did not know exactly what Godric had looked like when he was this age, but he could hazard enough of a guess that the reason Salazar had bothered with him at all was because he, too, could see the resemblance. The door closed behind him and Garrett did not wait to be invited to speak. "I need your help," said Garrett bluntly, brows knit together as he tried to focus despite the dull throbbing in his temple. Could a magical sensation make a blood vessel burst? He'd need a potion later too. "This is weird, I know it is, but but look me in the eyes and tell me you don't know who I am, because I need to get back, and I know you know that too."
Salazar, at first, did not move his head at all. He only looked up from his desk and stared at the boy a little askance. Then he also raised his head and regarded the, well, the intruder, technically speaking, with all of his attention. It seemed like the situation truly warranted it.
« Admittedly, I have two theories. The first is that you are Godric's bastard and you came for your father, but since you don't know how to approach him, you came to me. But that sounds a little too mundane, doesn't it? The second, on the other side... » And that was where he laid his back against his chair and clasped his hands together. The girl outside, he'd never seen before, but this one was a whole different matter.
He did look him in the eyes, directly, though he tilted his head a little as he pondered. « The second is a little more interesting but also more... of a problem. Someone has played with an hourglass, perhaps? »
"I didn't have any bastards," retorted Garrett incredulously, wrinkling his nose. Then he added a moment later in partial uncertainty, "none I knew of — know of — whatever," he finished with emphasis. For all he knew there may've been little bastard Godrics running around somewhere in Sweden or Rome or gods-only-knew where, but he'd never heard word of them.
He met Salazar's gaze evenly. Garrett was not Godric. He had not endured the same struggles and losses, had not needed to bear the same loneliness and had not needed to fight any battles. He'd never taken a life nor nearly had his taken. But he knew what it was to bear an awful secret that would mean the end of his life as he knew it if the wrong person or people ever discovered it. He was afraid of that fate. He was not afraid of Salazar. Whether he would call himself by this name or as Stephen, this man was his best friend.
"Bit more complicated than that. My classmate was fucking around with magic she shouldn't have been." Rude, but true as far as he believed it. "The bottom line is this: A thousand years from now, you and Godric and Rowena and Helga will walk these halls again. You come back. Born into a new life. Three guesses who I am, Sal, and the first two don't count."
Such a frank and direct stare that was. Had the situation been different, Salazar would have considered it rude --- or a challenge. But the situation, as sudden as it could seem, was what it was, and that stare the boy was giving him was neither of those things. Insolent, perhaps, but honest. The blue of the iris unmistakable even in the dim light of the study.
Wanting absolute certainty, Salazar prodded the young man’s mind with a soft brush of Legilimency. A dangerous thing to do if what he said was true (and Salazar, so accustomed to lies, liked to believe that he was indeed good at spotting the truth); but he sought no journey in the future, vicariously, through another’s thoughts. He found, however, familiarity --- and thus retreated from the maze of the boy’s head.
Reincarnation, “fucking around” with magic. It was a problem. It didn’t matter how much he wished to know, the only feasible thing to do was to fix this as soon as possible, to consign everyone to their right time. Perhaps he ought to be overly cautious and drink something to forget about the meeting entirely, once everything was said and done, lest temptation came back knocking on his door.
Salazar stared, rather attentively, and raised an eyebrow. « I think you might be Helga. Though I must say, she never called me “Sal”. » A brief pause, dripping sarcasm. « Now that this is cleared... I believe I will have to fix what your classmate caused, mh? You cannot possibly meet yourself. »
