Kim & The Created

Kim House rocked our socks off. Even in the hot, desert sun, Kim managed to keep her energy high. Her outfit consisted of black paint across her body that contrasted against her platinum blonde locks. As she roared and leaped and crawled across the stage and into the dirt pit, the crowd was totally feelin’ it. If you haven’t heard Kim and the Created at this point, you better get with the program and catch their next show!

Zig Zags

We didn’t have to go far to keep it going, Zig Zags were up next on the same stage. They kept us head banging our little hearts out. Another favorite of ours at the fest.

Over on the Jive Joint stage, Feels were keeping the party going.

New York band, DIIV, kept the vibes chill as the sun went down.

L.A. Witch

The sunset and full moon collided when L.A. Witch took the stage. The all female power trio kept us in a desert daze with their psych-rock jams.

Warpaint closed out the night for us and they were everything we dreamed they’d be.

Desert Daze was truly magical. Its independent spirit is part of what made it so great. No obnoxious lines or drama, just a chill fest with really cool bands playing in the desert. And the camping part was dope too! Just remember to bring plenty of sun screen and bug spray next year!

With the haze of Desert Daze upon us, we thought we would drop some of the more fresh flavor that the one-day desert camp-out will be bringing to us all!  It’s easy to say bands like Warpaint, DIIV, Dan Deacon, Psychic Ills, Bass Drum of Death, and Deap Vally will be poppin’ off, but what about all those other names?? Cool vs. Tite: “You Don’t Own Me” (Homie Post)

Let’s get one thing straight before we discuss - “You Don’t Own Me” is a bonafide classic. You might think this is an anthem for females, but the door swings both ways in this song. The purpose of this song is to define one’s place in a relationship, and to retain their authenticity as an individual. Basically, do yourself a favor and don’t fuck with this individual!

Clearly nothing can top the 1963 original by Lesley Gore, but when I heard that Polica was releasing an EP last year, my eyes grew big when I read that the title of the last song was “You Don’t Own Me.” Indeed it was a cover of the hit, and this EP would be included in the deluxe edition of Polica’s sophomore album Shulamith.

As the original is smooth to the core, but a lyrical monster - it makes it a bit more twisted to sweetly sing the words rather than scream (as anyone who’d try to karaoke this song would) of letting that certain someone know “when I go out with you, don’t put me on display” Preach woman, preach.

The roaring introduction in Polica’s cover is the definition of “tite” in my opinion. Polica uses their sonic punch to accelerate the emotion conveyed in this song, and adds as much force as possible while Channy’s higher pitched, but equally as haunting voice flows through the rest of the song. It’s more of a modern approach when covering this song, and definitely intensifies the defensive track into a beast that literally sets everything right in its place.

Rest in Peace forever Lesley Gore, you deserved to have the greatest party as an entry to heaven and I hope you’ll cry because you want to.

Tuning in to Desert Daze: A Cool-Tite Playlist

There’s nothing like the mystique of the California desert - the dry heat backed by the cool nights, the epic day-time landscapes followed by clear, starry skies.  So of course the peeps from Moon Block Party would want to host a psychedelic, festival camp-out set lakeside in the desert of Mecca, CA!  

The 4th installment of the Desert Daze Music Festival will take place on May 2, and will feature the likes of Warpaint, Failure, Dan Deacon, The Budos Band, DIIV, Psychic Ills, Chelsea Wolfe, White Lung... and a whole bunch of other great acts who’s names get smaller and smaller down as your eye scans down the flier.

There’s a lot here, so to help you get familiar and excited for the wild Desert Daze trip, we set y’all up with this awesome playlist!  Aside from our usual faves (e.g. L.A. NEW VID: The Growlers’ “Not The Man”

Los Growlers have been mad busy touring the world over, but today they took the time to premier a fresh video for the track “Not The Man.”  The video features some sweet views of LA, the band playing in a field of flowers, and singer Brooks Neilson smoking a stog in the bathtub, crooning about how he's "not the man he used to be." It feels touching and sincere, but by the end you’ll remember - oh yeah, it’s still the fun-having, goof-ball Growlers per usual!  Very enjoyable! “Not The Man” comes to us from 2014′s Chinese Fountain - a Cool-Tite fave, and album Top Album of 2014!

The Coathangers & Shannon and The Clams: The Echo 3/31/15

We were still recovering from the Burgerama hangover, but judging by the show put on by The Coathangers and Shannon and The Clams Tuesday night at The Echo, everyone was alive and kickin’. It was a sold out show, and certainly felt that way. The Coathangers brought their usual ruckus, and Shannon and the Clams played an awesome set with a handful of new songs. A Plea to the Almighty Defenders - 3 Reasons You Should Play Burgerama

Dear Almighty Defenders,

We at Cool-Tite like your shit! It would be really cool if you guys played a set at Burgerama 4. We would love it, and all the people of the world would benefit. Here are some reasons we came up with to try and persuade you:

3. You’ll all be in the same building. Black Lips will be there, King Khan and BBQ Show will be there. It’s like the the stars aligned to make this happen.

2. You haven’t played a show in a while. You're last gig was in 2010, we think it's about time for a comeback. We all need some soul otherwise we'll just Bow Down and Die.

1. It would be spontaneous. For a band that was formed under unusual and spontaneous circumstances, when the Black Lips fled India and crashed with King Khan and BBQ in Berlin, playing a spontaneous set at Burgerama only makes sense.

Gettin’ Weird with WEEDEATER: Friday 3.27 @ The Complex

We’ve become quite the suckers for bands that can take blues riffs, turn it up to the max volume and distortion, and then slow it down to the stickiest and sludgiest of groove-heavy sonic goodness. 

For those unfamiliar, Weedeater do just that! Led by the core duo of Shep and a wild man named Dixie - formerly of the legendary Buzzov*en and our personal fave, Bongzilla - Weedeater are likely to melt faces with their stoner jamz.

These dudes are wild, and you certainly need to see them live while you can!! Not only is Dixie known for strapping cough syrup to his amp while performing so he can do a no-handed chug and glug and get super slow and wonky while playing, but they've had some recent lineup changes that left peeps wondering if they’d be back.  Also, a few years ago their plans for a tour and Steve Albini-produced record had to be postponed after Dixie shot himself in the foot while cleaning his favorite shotgun.  

Weedeater plays with King Parrot, Infinite Waste, and Worship this Friday, March 27th at The Complex!  Plus the highly anticipated new album, Goliathan, is out on May 18th on Season of Mist, with a vinyl release of 500 on Opaque Green (and comes with rolling papers), 650 on Transparent Orange, and black.
