chapter ten: i could be a pretty girl, shut up when you want me to ⟨ mostly written ⟩
At exactly 8:30, Y/n knocked twice against Dani's room door. She barely had a chance to let her mind wander or second-guess herself before the door swung wide open.
"Right on time," Dani smiled. "I was starting to think you were gonna bail."
Y/n leaned casually against the doorframe, a playful smirk tugging at her lips. "I definitely considered it."
Dani gasped dramatically, "Wow. Mean."
"I'm kidding," Y/n laughed softly, her eyes sweeping over her. "You look nice."
The compliment came so naturally that it took Dani a second to process the words. "Oh." A faint, subtle blush warmed her cheeks as a smile tugged at her lips, and she looked down at her outfit. "Thanks."
"You ready to go?"
Dani nodded, stepping out into the hallway and locking the door behind her. The walk to the elevator was quiet at first, though not awkwardly or uncomfortably.
"So..." Dani broke the silence first, looking over as they walked side by side. "Is this what you always do?"
"What? Take a pretty girl out on a coffee date?” she asked, nodding. “Pretty much every morning."
Dani completely ignored the second part, raising her eyebrows. “So this is a date then huh?”
Y/n panicked, usually, she was able to openly flirt with people she takes out. However, she wasn’t sure how Dani would take it. “I mean-if you’re fine with it,” she replies, with less confidence than before.
Dani laughed, the sound light and musical in the quiet hallway. "Yeah, sure," she tried to say casually.
The elevator chimed, the doors sliding open, and they stepped inside. "I still can't believe we actually live on the same floor," Dani said softly, looking up at the floor numbers lighting up above the door.
"I know, it's wild."
"We've probably walked past each other a hundred times without realizing it."
"And it took you literally running into me to finally say hi," Y/n teased.
Dani covered her face with one hand, letting out an embarrassed groan. "You are never going to let me live that down, are you?"
Y/n smiled warmly. "I haven't fully decided yet."
"I was running late!" Dani defended herself weakly.
Y/n smiled, "Mhm." Dani brought her hand down, looking at her. "I felt terrible about it."
"I know,” Y/n laughed.
"Shut up," Dani grinned at her.
The elevator chimed again, and they stepped out into the crisp, cool morning air. Campus was only just beginning to wake up around them. Students hurried across the walkways toward early lectures with fife and energy drinks in their hands.
"So," Y/n said as they stepped off the curb to cross the street, "dance?"
Dani laughed out loud. "Is that seriously your best conversation starter?"
"I panicked," Y/n admitted with a laugh.
Dani shrugged, "I mean, I guess it wasn't terrible."
"No?"
"No," Dani offered smoothly. "It was kind of cute."
Y/n paused for a fraction of a second, looking over at her with a raised eyebrow. "Cute?"
Dani's initial wave of confidence lasted for exactly half a second before the weight of what she'd just said caught up to her. "I mean-"
"You think I'm cute?" Y/n asked, a dangerous hint of amusement in her voice.
"What?" Dani laughed nervously, her cheeks suddenly feeling hot. "That's-that's not what I meant at all."
"It really sounded like what you meant."
"I meant..." Dani scrambled, searching her mind for literally any logical explanation. "The question was cute."
Y/n looked at her, eyebrows raised in surprise. "My question?"
"Yes!" she answered quickly.
"It was literally one word."
"I know," Dani mumbled, looking straight ahead.
The teasing faded as they slipped back to comfortable silence, but Y/n’s mind couldn’t stop overthinking.
Maybe this wasn't just a friendly coffee run. Or maybe Dani was just naturally sweet and kinda flirty to everyone. She didn't want to think too hard about it, though, for fear of messing up what they'd started.

daniela ended up at the party.
somehow, after much whining and begging from lara and megan (who conveniently left out the detail of y/n’s attendance at the event), she eventually gave in, deciding that maybe taking her mind off the whole y/n situation would be a pretty good solution.
she had been moping around all day. when asked by her members, she blamed it on being tired from rehearsal, but it was actually attributed to the fact that after this weekend, she had to see y/n again. work with her again. it made her feel a bit nauseous.
the party was at a huge mansion in the hills, the house of some beauty influencer dani had forgotten the name of. she had somehow gotten split up from lara and megan almost as soon as they all arrived, and she found herself wandering through the kitchen area, humming along to some 2000s pop anthem that was playing. the walls shook lightly as the bass pounded from the speakers.
the room was dimly lit, only by a green strobe and the blinking of the city lights and neighbouring buildings that were in view from the floor to ceiling windows. ice was spilled all over one of the kitchen countertops, and it was sticky with the residue from empty cups and cans.
daniela’s eyes scanned the crowd for anyone that she knew. in this city, at these types of functions, there was always a familiar face amongst a horde of strangers. at the top of the stairs, she recognised two guys she knew from the LA dance scene talking to someone who was following them down the stairs.
“thank god we managed to steal you away from those pretentious, indie sleaze knicks before it was too late.” one of them said.
“yeah, seriously y/n, you need to visit more often.” the other added.
daniela froze. y/n. y/n?
maybe there could be another y/n? the city was massive and—
and that’s when she saw you, finally coming into view from behind the two guys.
she watched you stride down the top of the stairs with the same endearing charm you had a year ago, but now it had transformed into something much louder, more self-assured than ever before. as always, you towered over her, even when she was in heels - but you had grown into your height. the clumsiness you had at 19 was no longer there at 21.
even under the low light, she was sure your arms had somehow gotten even bigger, and were now littered in tattoos. you look so mature. so aware of yourself. it was a little intimidating.
but there were also parts of you that were the same, which dani took a weird comfort in. like the way you smelled. your cologne, the lingering air of cigarette smoke. you still used the same cologne. you always had a velvety, warm smell around you that reminded her of how the house smelled after her mom’s cooking. and of course, your lazy, crooked smile which used to be able to convince her of doing just about anything. in some ways at least, you were still the same girl. you were still hers.
you laughed with the girl next to you as the two dancer guys you had been talking with disappeared amongst the crowd. then you looked up.
“dani—?” you took a misstep on the stairs when you saw her, almost tripping and holding onto the wall to steady yourself. “coño,” you cursed under your breath.
“smooth.” daniela deadpanned, the corners of her lips threatening to curl into a small smile.
she looked even better in person than she did on instagram— well, before you blocked her. before you couldn’t stand to see her face any longer.
before that, you had quietly observed, seen how katseye had changed her, how the confidence now radiated from her in waves. she had always made you nervous, but now it seemed she had the same intoxicating effect on everybody else. your stomach turned, threatening to spill out all the alcohol you had consumed so far that night.
you blushed and looked down for a second. “i’m drunk.”
dani looked you up and down and tilted her head to the side. “you sure about that?”
you hated how well she knew you. she still made you fumble.
“who’s your friend?” dani’s eyes narrowed ever so slightly, flitting over the brunette girl who clung to your bicep.
you had almost forgotten she was there.
“oh, uh this is-“ you blinked. “what was your name again?” you ask her.
“amelie.” she doesn’t loosen her grip.
“amelie, right. this is amelie.”
daniela raises an eyebrow at you. “ah, ahora crees que eres el tigre” she snipes. (‘you think you’re a player now, huh?’)
“no empieces, daniela.” (‘don’t start’)
when her name slips from your lips, it makes the both of you flinch. it’s been so long. she always loved the way you said it, the way it was supposed to be said. the air between you is tense and charged, and the sounds of the party around you seem to dissipate as you get lost in each other's eyes for the first time in forever. her gaze slices through you, equal parts annoyed, and equal parts somewhat in awe at seeing you again.
her tight black dress hugged her body in all the right places, and it matched your black t-shirt and jeans. you were accidentally in sync. you looked like a couple. you banished the thought from your brain just as quickly as it had appeared.
“your hair’s dark again.” you break the silence between you, eyes fanning over her frame.
dani almost wilts under your intense gaze, swallowing harshly. “it was dark the last time you saw me.”
you shake your head. “they made you get the blonde highlights back for SIS.”
this amuses her. “you been keeping an eye on me, or something?”
you scoff. “so what if i have?”
it was dani’s turn to fumble now. she wasn’t used to you giving an attitude back at her like that. you really had changed. this annoyed her even more. she rolled her eyes at you.
“will you excuse us for a second?” you asked amelie with a grimace, the girl you had only met a few moments before in the bathroom queue.
she didn’t look too impressed, but nodded, trailing her hand down your chest. “don’t make me wait too long,” she told you flirtily, before shoving past daniela.
“excuse yourself, i’m done talking to you.” daniela sneered at you sharply, also turning to strut away through the crowd.
you blinked at how quickly she was gone, picking up your pace to follow after her and grab her wrist. “dani, wait—“
her breath hitched at the sudden contact between you as your ringed-fingers curled around her wrist, an almost pleading gesture. the way your eyes bore into hers reminded her of the desperate expression that you used to get on your face when you would beg for her to let you touch her, to taste her– “no me toques.” she snaps herself out of it and snatches her wrist away, and you both immediately miss the contact. (‘don’t touch me.’)
you run your fingers through your hair, exasperated. it’s way too hot inside amongst all the bodies, and its only february. you need to be alone with her, to hear her voice properly again. maybe then it will all be okay. maybe then you can work together without everything crashing down all over again. maybe then you can stop already wanting her again.
“wanna go smoke?” is the only thing your mind seems to conjure up.
“wanna go smoke?” dani repeats, incredulous. “we haven’t talked in a year, and all you can say is ‘wanna go smoke?”
“in my defense, i was heading out for a smoke before you appeared anyway.”
“my bad for ruining your plans.” she huffs, not at all sorry. “what were you gonna do, shotgun smoke into that girl’s mouth?”
“is that a yes, or a no?”
daniela notices the girl from earlier watching you both from the dancefloor and scowls, saying nothing more, and its her turn to grab you now, hand latching onto your wrist hard to quickly drag you away outside by the pool.
the purple pool lights are enchanting, and the way they illuminate on the rippling water is a calm contrast to the rager inside the house. it’s much quieter outside, and you can finally hear yourself think. you’re not drunk enough yet, and it’s the worst possible time for this.
when daniela finally lets go of you, there are small indents on your arm that her sharp acrylic nails leave behind. you run your fingers over them.
daniela notices your action and rolls her eyes. “don’t be such a fucking baby.”
you don’t say that you liked feeling a mark, a reminder of her presence on you again. instead, you pull out a packet of reds and dig around in your pocket for your lighter.
daniela has to swallow down the lump in her throat as she watches you smoke. you sit at the edge of the pool, legs spread slightly, cigarette resting between your parted lips. you look good, she always thought you looked good - but especially when you smoked.
her immediate craving for you disgusted her. the desire built up in her chest like a fireball, burning up her insides and taunting her. her eyebrows furrowed. she was better than this, wasn’t she?
“you should quit. it’s not good for your stamina.”
you feel a chill down your neck as the wind passes over you, and you twitch a little. “well, we both know i never had a problem with that before.”
the suggestive statement stops her in her tracks, and she focuses intently on the water in front of her to stop a flashback from running through her mind.
“stop looking at me like that, y/n.”
“i’m not looking at you like anything.” you exhale the cigarette smoke, aiming it away from her face. “you look good.” you say, pausing thoughtfully. “it’s just been a while.”
“whose fault is that?”
“that’s up for interpretation.” you muse, taking another puff.
“is this your twisted way of apologising to me?” daniela crosses her arms over her chest, and your eyes can’t help but track her movements. you’re getting a little sick of the animosity. after all, she was the one who–
“sorry? i have nothing to apologise for!” you spit back. “you mean you should.”
she scoffs. “i didn’t do anything i need to apologise for.”
“dique.” you quip. (‘supposedly’)
“classic, dani.” you roll your eyes, turning away. “never thinks she’s done anything wrong until it’s too late.”
“vete pa la pinga.” (‘go fuck yourself’) she gets up from the edge of the pool, storming away.
“see you on monday.” you call after her, your tone not half as sharp as hers, but desperate to get the last word in.
you’re left alone outside, angrily tossing the butt of your cigarette into the water.
no matter what she seems to think, you blame her for the way things went down between you.

august 2022
“you know you’re the first out of everyone to be put in level A for dance?” ezrela explains as she and lexi show you around the trainee house. the other girls had finished training for the day, and after you had finished doing admin shit with missy, it was time for you to settle in for the night at your new home.
the idea of living with a bunch of other girls you had just met for an extended amount of time scared you a little. you hadn’t had many girl friends back home, which was mostly due to your busy dance schedule and lack of time to socialise, but also due to the way you presented yourself. california was one of the most liberal states, but you still hadn’t really felt free enough until you graduated high school. but the house was amazing, located amongst all the major studios, and right in the heart of the san fernando valley, and much bigger than your family’s small home back in van nuys.
“for real?” you raised an eyebrow, lugging your heavy suitcase up the stairs with a practiced ease. “i thought nikky was bluffing. she seems… intense.”
“she is,” lexi giggled. “but she’s a super good teacher. i feel like i’ve definitely improved so much since i got here. most of us have been training since march.”
“oh, shit.”
“yeah, and for you to be put in A without even doing a real level test? that’s crazy. we’ve all been wondering for months what it takes to be in level A, and i guess now we know. the rest of us are doomed.” ezrela chuckles. “except maybe dani or megan.”
your ears prick up at the mention of daniela, but you play it cool. you hadn’t got to speak to her at all since you all got back to the house. she had headed straight to her room to shower, and you hadn’t seen her since. “yeah, daniela is um, is dancing her main thing then?”
ezrela nods, thinking nothing of your question. “she’s been dancing since she was like three years old. it shows, she’s amazing. she usually ranks the highest out of all of us for dance.”
“well, when you hear my singing you won’t be as impressed.” you chuckle. “dancing is definitely my strong suit, i think it’s the only thing that even really got me into the program.” you say humbly.
“no way,” she shakes her head. “you radiate the ‘star quality’ the execs are always talking about!”
“yeah! the way you came in not knowing anybody and just danced like that after nikky put you on the spot? it was pretty hypnotising. and i love the masculine vibe you’ve got going. very mysterious.”
you blush at their compliments and crack a smile. “thank you.”
“big idol energy.” ezrela jokes, and the three of you break out into laughter.
they lead you through the hallway on the second floor of the house, and you notice how lived in the home seems already. there’s polaroids of the girls plastered on their bedroom doors, and the sound of giggling buzzing through the floor downstairs. you can already tell they all feel like a family.
“this is your room,” ezrela explains, pushing open one of the doors. “we hope you don’t mind not choosing, everywhere else is already taken. but you’re sharing with me and dani.”
sure enough, there daniela is, sprawled across her bed on her front, scrolling on her phone. she looks up when the three of you enter.
you and dani lock eyes, and the room suddenly feels a little smaller.
“welcome to roommate club!” ezrela squeals.
the two girls leave you to unpack, heading to the room next door that lexi shares with karlee and naisha. you’re left alone with daniela.
you silently crouch down to the floor, unzipping your suitcase as you try to think of something to say. so far, no luck.
“you want some help?” daniela asks, putting down her phone.
“uh, sure. that would be great, thanks.” you nod, and daniela joins you in the middle of the room.
“you can put all your stuff here,” she pulls out two of the empty bottom drawers and points to one of the storage boxes by the window. “if you need more space, just ask, ezrela and i can move our stuff around.”
“i should be fine,” you shake your head, pulling out the piles of folded clothes from your suitcase. “i don’t have that much stuff.”
“looks like your entire wardrobe consists of duplicate black t-shirts and wifebeaters anyway.” daniela teases, grabbing some of your clothes and holding them up in the air.
“hey, i like what i like.” you shrug, smiling a little. you continue to unpack your stuff, and daniela helps you to put them on the empty hangers.
“it’s cool,” she says, attention back on you now. “i like your style, it’s cute.” you swear you see her bite her lip when her eyes sweep over you. its the same look she gave you when you caught eyes in the mirror earlier that afternoon.
you blink. “can you pass me the vaina–?” you say, catching yourself midway. “sorry, just that thing there.” you point to your dance bag on top of the dresser.
“la vaina?” dani repeats, amused at your dialect. “you dominican?”
you nod, a little bashful that she picked up on that so quickly. “dominicans, we’re always saying that vaina shit.”
she laughs, and you’re immediately enchanted by the sound, noticing the dimples that frame her cheeks. “i hear it alot from my dominican friends back in ATL.”
“you’re cuban, right?”
daniela nods. “how did you know?”
you shrug, and give her a small smile. “don’t you ever miss your family? like, doesn’t being here ever get lonely?”
“at times, yeah, the stress of training is so physically and mentally demanding. but the schedule is so busy that we don’t really have time to miss anybody. and all us girls are like a family at this point. we always have eachother.” at that comment, you falter a little, which she notices. “hey,” her expression turns soft, and she nudges you with her elbow. “you’ll fit in with everyone in no time. i promise. but i do miss my mom’s cooking.”
“i’ve been told i make a pretty good ropa vieja,” you offer, and her eyes widen with almost comical excitement. it’s cute, she’s cute.
“fuck, no way. i would literally marry you on the spot if you made me some one day. and i’m not joking.”
you can feel yourself about to start blushing again, so you play off your reaction with a laugh, playing along. “looks like i’ll be spending alot of time in the kitchen, then.”
when she laughs again, her phone screen lights up with a notification. you notice her phone background, a prom picture of her and some guy in a grey tuxedo.
of course she had a boyfriend. it’s not like you were planning anything, you were both trainees— that would make for a very messy situation. it was just typical. you just had a habit of being interested in straight girls.
your knees brush when dani scoots a little closer to you, and neither of you make an effort to move. you swallow, suddenly hyper-aware of your senses as the beautiful girl next to you runs her fingers through her curly hair.
she quickly clicked the power button off, sending the screen dark.
you were fucked.
and that was only the beginning.

it was hot.
like really hot.
the humid air in singapore made it 10x hotter in the cockpit of yn’s car.
the pressure was on today. not because she was so close to winning the grand prix, but because her girlfriend, daniela, would finally be able to watch her race in person.
with her demanding career it was hard for her to attend and support her girlfriend during race weekends.
but now she stood in redbull’s pit garage, watching yn’s car travel at high speed from different angles. daniela knew how much effort, time, and money was put in for yn to get this far in her career.
yn needed to prove herself tonight. if she brought home another win, then she knew that it would secure her a seat for redbull.
she had been with the team for only one full season, so if she wanted to keep that going she would have to perform as good as verstappen, or even better.
russell had been dominating this race. he only lost his position a few times due to pit stops but he quickly regained them.
yn had three laps to get her fifth win of the season.
“alright yn, you’re two seconds behind russell but you have great pace.” yn heard from her race engineer.
shit.
yn needed to pick it up so she could get DRS.
she pushed hard on the acceleration and broke late on the turns to close the gap between her and russell.
daniela’s gaze never left the monitor. she could tell that yn was getting antsy by the way she was constantly tapping her fingers against the wheel.
she had noticed her little “tick” after watching many of yn’s onboards over the years.
she never changes.
yn was driving closer to the DRS detection zone, she knew she wasn’t that close but she still held out hope.
“what’s the gap,” she mumbled to her engineer through the radio.
“…you are currently 1.523 seconds behind. you need to push this.”
she was getting impatient, “fucking hell man.”
LAP 60/62
she zipped by the crowd. she couldn’t focus on them right now. she couldn’t even hear the roar of her engine as she pushed it.
she needed to close this gap fast.
she focused on her breathing and not the fact that it felt like she was driving in satan’s asshole right now.
“how is max doing?” yn questioned. she hadn’t seen her teammate ever since she passed his car at lap 33.
it was silent before, “max is P3, currently 0.561 seconds behind you.”
she didn’t respond, too focused on braking just right at all the turns.
as she passed by the third detection zone, she asked the same question even though she already knew the answer.
“gap?”
“1.010 seconds behind mate. just keep pushing like this and we can get DRS,” the engineer spoke.
she shook her head, visibly disappointed in herself. she wanted to perform better, for her team, for daniela, for herself.
the redbull pit garage was all over the place but daniela was still stuck watching yn drive. she couldn’t even think, that’s how tense it was in there.
LAP 61/62
yn continued with her previous strategy: drive fast and break super fucking late.
she made sure that all her turns were tight and that she took advantage of the straights in the circuit.
“PUSH, PUSH, PUSH,” the engineer said.
yn was getting fed up with this race and the fact that she couldn’t get the damn DRS.
“I’M FUCKING GOING,” she shouted back to him. it was comical really. even daniela let out a laugh when she heard her girl swear at the engineer.
that poor man.
as yn approached the detection zone she decided to go as fast as she could.
she waited.
and waited.
she got it.
the signal was given and she had gotten DRS. she pressed the button on her wheel and accelerated to get right up to the rear of the mercedes, but making sure to not have any contact with it.
she was in it now. the adrenaline was pumping. she had a chance.
“what’s the gap?” she asked.
“0.327 seconds to russell. you can definitely get him here. break as late you can.”
a turn was coming up. she could sense that russell knew what she was going to do once they reached it.
she broke late, and slightly moved to the left to try and pass but, damn. russell was good at defending. he managed to get through the turn before speeding down the straight.
“FUCK ME. i almost had him there,” yn shouted to no one in particular.
LAP 62/62 - FINAL LAP
she was pissed and rightfully so.
it really came down to the final lap.
daniela wishes she could comfort yn right now and tell her that she’s going to win this whole damn thing.
“i’m close enough. he’s going to expect me to try the same move as last time. i’m going to try on the first zone.” yn spoke into the radio.
she didn’t care if the team was against it or not. “okay mate we got it.”
she exhaled. she had to do it now or else there were no more chances left.
with how close she was she didn’t need to confirm the gap with her engineer. she waited for the signal to pop up so she could use her DRS.
as soon as she saw it she pressed it immediately. she was right behind russell again before she made her move.
she quickly moved her wheel to the left and accelerated more down the straight before turning slightly.
she didn’t want to celebrate too early but with a quick glance at her mirrors she could see the mercedes behind her.
“LET’S FUCKING GO. DID YOU SEE THAT SHIT?” yn yelled.
the engineer didn’t waste anytime and quickly responded, “that was insane mate.”
you couldn’t see it but yn was smiling widely under her helmet.
the reactions in the pit garage were even better once they saw yn in first place.
daniela yelled and hugged some random pit crew member as she watched yn.
yn had easily left russell behind her as she saw the checkered flags start to come into her view.
she held the wheel steady before crossing the flags signaling that she was the winner of the 2025 singapore grand prix.
yn could finally breathe properly. she had done it. her fifth win in one season.
“OH MY GOD I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS,” she shouted through her radio.
she waved to the crowd as she passed by at a slower speed. she continued her way until she saw the first place sign and slowed her car down.
she quickly took her wheel out before pushing herself up out the seat. she looked at the crowd yelling her name and cheering her on for her incredible win.
but when she got a glimpse of that curly hair she immediately took her helmet off, not caring if she had broke the thing.
she quickly ran to daniela before picking her up and spinning her around.
“you did it, cariño,” daniela softly said before pulling her close enough for a kiss.
the cameras captured their kiss from every angle but the couple didn’t care. this win was for them, and them only.
yn pulled away from the kiss and put daniela down on her feet before hugging her tightly.
daniela continued to whisper in her ear, “you were amazing, amor. i knew you would win it all.”
“i did it for you baby,” yn said shakily, tears coming out her eyes.
daniela smiled before quickly wiping them away.
“that overtake was beautiful,” daniela added before giving yn another long, passionate kiss.
you both laughed and gave eachother more hugs before someone informed yn to head to the cooldown room.
daniela gave her one last peck before watching her walk off.
so fucking worth it.

EAT EM UP! | 12 grapes at midnight comes with a kiss too | ⤷ ゛fluff, suggestive jokes, not proof read.... whipped this up in 10 mins 🤓 ˎˊ˗
the countdown starts in three minutes and you're pretty sure you're going to choke on a grape. not because you're bad at eating grapes, that was definitely not the issue, but because daniela was sitting right next to you on the couch, thigh pressed against yours, she was laughing at something sophia just said about how megan tried to practice eating the grapes earlier and nearly choked on them all.

The thing Daniela loved best about you was the gentleness of your hands.
Your hugs were soft, your arms wrapping around her waist or around her neck in a way that made her feel like she was art being carefully handled by a restorationist. The press of your fingertips into the back of her hand when your hands are intertwined was always unforgettable, leaving an unseen mark but never a reddened imprint. Your palms were always that perfect kind of warm that she loved to have pressed against her skin as a grounding method.

Y/n POV:
The alarm rang at 5:00 a.m.
I groaned, reaching across the nightstand to silence it before it could wake Audrey. For a moment, I just stared at the ceiling, willing my body to move.
Bills didn't pay themselves.
I swung my legs over the side of the bed, my muscles protesting from yesterday's shift. Every part of me felt sore, but that wasn't anything new.
I quietly got dressed in my faded work jeans, steel-toe boots, and an old gray T-shirt with the company logo across the chest.
The smell of coffee filled the tiny kitchen as I packed Audrey's lunch—a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, apple slices, a juice box, and a little note with a smiley face drawn on it.
She always smiled when she found those.
A few minutes later, I gently knocked on her bedroom door.
"Morning, baby."
A sleepy little voice answered.
"Five more minutes..."
I smiled.
"You said that yesterday."
"So?"
I laughed softly before sitting beside her bed.
"Come on. Mrs. Bradford's waiting."
Audrey slowly sat up, her messy hair sticking out in every direction.
"Can you braid my hair today?"
"I can try."
"You made it crooked yesterday."
"I know."
"And the day before."
"I know."
She giggled.
"You're still learning."
"I'm glad someone's patient with me."
The construction site was already loud before I even parked.
Concrete mixers churning. Forklifts beeping as they reversed. Power tools whining and grinding. Men shouting across the site in a cacophony of Spanish and English and everything in between. The smell of diesel and dust hung thick in the air.
I barely had one foot out of my truck before someone yelled.
"L/N!"
I looked over, my stomach already tightening.
Our foreman, Rick Dawson, was marching toward me with his clipboard in hand. His hard hat was slightly askew, and his face was red from the heat or anger—probably both.
"You're three minutes late!"
I glanced at my watch. 7:03.
"I—"
"I don't care why. Get your hard hat on and get moving. We've got a deadline, and your ass isn't going to be the reason we miss it."
"Yes, sir."
I didn't argue.
There wasn't any point.
The next several hours blurred together in a haze of sweat and exhaustion.
Carrying lumber until my arms burned.
Mixing cement until my hands were raw.
Hauling equipment across the site in the beating sun.
Every muscle in my body screamed for rest, but I pushed through. I'd learned a long time ago that stopping meant falling behind, and falling behind meant getting yelled at. Getting yelled at meant risking my job.
And I couldn't risk my job.
Every time my body wanted to stop, I pictured Audrey's face. Her laugh. The way she danced around the kitchen singing Katseye songs.
That kept me going.
Around two in the afternoon, one of the site supervisors approached me while I was taking a quick water break.
"L/N?"
I wiped my mouth with the back of my hand.
"Yeah?"
"The office wants to see you."
I frowned.
"The office?"
"They said now. Drop what you're doing."
A knot formed in my stomach.
Had I done something wrong? Missed a safety protocol? Said something to the wrong person?
I couldn't think of anything, but the knot didn't care.
I wiped my hands on my jeans before walking toward the trailer office. The metal steps groaned under my weight as I climbed up and knocked on the door.
"Come in."
Inside sat Rick...
...and the company manager, a man named Greg Harrison I'd only spoken to twice in five years.
Neither of them smiled.
"Have a seat."
I stayed standing.
"What's going on?"
Greg folded his hands together on the desk. His expression was carefully neutral, which somehow made it worse.
"I'll get straight to the point."
My stomach dropped.
"The company is downsizing."
I felt my heartbeat speed up.
"We're laying off several employees. It's nothing personal, just a financial decision."
He slid an envelope across the desk.
"I'm sorry."
I looked at the envelope but didn't touch it. The words felt distant, like I was hearing them from underwater.
"What... does that mean?"
"It means today will be your last day."
The room suddenly felt too quiet. The distant noise of the construction site faded into nothing.
"I don't understand."
"It's a financial decision. Nothing more."
"I've never missed a deadline."
"I know."
"I stay late."
"We know."
"I work overtime whenever you ask."
"We appreciate that."
"Then why me?"
Greg sighed, leaning back in his chair.
"This isn't about performance. You're a good worker, Y/N. You always have been. But we have to make cuts, and—"
"And I'm one of them."
He nodded slowly.
I swallowed hard, my throat tight.
"I have a daughter."
Neither man spoke.
"She's five."
Still silence.
"I'm her only parent. Her mother isn't in the picture."
Rick looked away, suddenly fascinated by the floor.
"I can't lose this job."
Greg's expression softened slightly, but his answer didn't.
"I'm sorry. I really am. But the decision's already been made."
"There has to be something."
"There isn't."
"I'll take fewer hours."
"No."
"I'll switch crews."
"No."
"I'll do anything. I'll scrub toilets. I'll clean equipment. I'll—"
He slowly shook his head.
"The decision's final, L/N. I'm sorry."
The words hit harder than any piece of equipment I'd ever lifted. Harder than any fall I'd ever taken. Harder than any injury I'd ever suffered.
I stared down at the envelope.
Inside was my final paycheck.
A pamphlet about unemployment benefits.
Information on returning company property.
Five years.
Gone in five minutes.
I picked up the envelope with shaking hands.
"...Okay."
I turned and walked out of the trailer.
No one stopped me.
Audrey POV:
Mrs. Bradford clapped her hands together, her voice bright and encouraging.
"Okay, everyone! Settle down! Today we're doing another partner activity!"
My heart jumped.
Maybe today would be different.
Maybe someone would pick me.
The classroom buzzed with excitement as kids paired up. I clutched my sketchbook against my chest, scanning the room for a friendly face.
Harper. She was already holding hands with Mia.
Noah. He was partnered with Eli.
I smiled a little at a girl named Sophie, hoping she might notice me.
She didn't.
Mrs. Bradford gave everyone a minute to find partners. The classroom filled with laughter and the sound of chairs scraping against the floor. Kids hurried across the room in pairs, their voices overlapping in excited chatter.
I waited.
One minute.
Two.
Soon, everyone had a partner.
Except me.
I looked down at my paper, my cheeks burning. Maybe they hadn't seen me. Maybe if I moved closer...
I took a small step toward another table.
"Can I—"
Before I could finish, the girl at the table frowned at me.
"We already have two people."
Another boy muttered loudly enough for me to hear.
"Nobody wants Audrey."
The other children laughed.
My face got hot.
I backed away, clutching my sketchbook so tightly my knuckles turned white. As I returned to my desk, I heard whispering behind me.
"She's weird."
Another voice followed.
"She only draws baby stuff. Like a little kid."
I hunched over my desk, pretending I couldn't hear them. My eyes burned, but I refused to cry. Mommy always said I was strong.
I'm strong, I told myself. I'm strong.
But it didn't feel true.
At recess, I tried again.
A group of girls were playing on the blacktop, pretending to run a bakery. One of them had a chalkboard menu. Another was drawing pretend cookies on the pavement.
I took a deep breath and approached them.
"Can I play?"
The girl with the chalkboard—Mia looked me up and down.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because you'll ruin it."
Another girl—Harper giggled.
"And your clothes are ugly."
Someone bumped my shoulder as they walked past, and my sketchbook slipped from my grasp. Crayons scattered across the sidewalk, rolling in every direction.
More laughter.
"Oops!"
"I didn't mean to!"
But they were all smiling.
I didn't pick up my crayons right away.
Instead, I ran.
Straight back inside, my footsteps echoing in the empty hallway. I burst through the classroom door, unable to hold back the tears anymore.
Mrs. Bradford looked up from her desk, her expression shifting from surprise to concern the second she saw my face.
"Audrey?"
I couldn't stop crying.
She immediately knelt beside me, her hand gentle on my shoulder.
"Oh, sweetheart... What happened?"
I tried to answer, but the words wouldn't come. They were stuck in my throat, tangled up with the sobs.
Mrs. Bradford reached for a tissue and handed it to me.
"You don't have to tell me all at once. Just take your time."
After a few quiet minutes, I finally managed to whisper,
"They don't like me."
Mrs. Bradford's heart broke.
"Oh, Audrey."
She wrapped an arm around my shoulders, pulling me close.
"I'm so sorry they made you feel that way."
"Did I do something bad?"
"No."
She answered so quickly that I looked up, surprised by the certainty in her voice.
"You didn't do anything wrong. You hear me? Not a single thing."
"Then why don't they want to play with me?"
Mrs. Bradford didn't have an easy answer. She paused, her brow furrowed, searching for the right words.
"Sometimes people make unkind choices," she finally said. "That's not your fault. It never is."
She reached into her desk and pulled out a clean sheet of paper.
"Would you like to draw with me for a little while?"
I nodded, wiping my eyes.
Together, we drew flowers. Rainbows. Butterflies.
For just a little while, I forgot about recess.
Y/n pov:
I sat in my truck for a long time, staring at the steering wheel.
The engine was off. The windows were up. The world outside was muffled and distant.
I didn't cry. I couldn't.
I just sat there, the envelope resting on the passenger seat like a bomb waiting to explode.
What am I going to do?
The question echoed in my head, but I had no answer.
I had a few thousand dollars in savings. Maybe two months of rent if I stretched it. After that...
I couldn't think about after that.
I started the engine and drove.
By the time I reached Audrey's school, I still hadn't figured out how I was going to tell her.
I couldn't do it yet.
Not today.
I sat in the pickup line, my fingers drumming against the steering wheel. The envelope was hidden under the passenger seat. The weight of it felt physical.
One day, I told myself. Just give me one more day.
Mrs. Bradford noticed me arriving earlier than usual when I walked up to the entrance.
"Ms. L/N? Everything okay?"
I forced a smile.
"Yeah... I just got off early today. Thought I'd surprise her."
She looked like she wanted to ask more, but simply nodded.
A few moments later, Audrey came out carrying her backpack. Her face lit up when she saw me.
"Mommy!”
I knelt to hug her, pulling her into my arms.
"Hey, baby."
"Why are you here so early?"
"I thought... maybe we could do something fun."
Her eyes lit up, the sadness from earlier forgotten.
"Really?"
"How does ice cream sound?"
She gasped dramatically.
"Even before dinner?"
I laughed a genuine laugh this time.
"Just this once."
The little ice cream shop wasn't anything fancy. Just a small storefront with a few plastic tables and a chalkboard menu.
Audrey picked strawberry with rainbow sprinkles.
I ordered a plain vanilla cone.
She sat across from me, happily kicking her legs beneath the table. Between bites of her melting cone, she told me about butterflies and castles and how she wanted to learn another Katseye dance.
I noticed she smiled less than yesterday.
But she was smiling now.
That was enough for the moment.
On the drive home, we sang along to her favorite songs with the windows rolled down. She belted out the lyrics, her small voice filling the cab.
For a little while, neither of us thought about the bad parts of the day.
That night, after Audrey fell asleep hugging her stuffed bunny, I sat alone at the kitchen table.
The final paycheck rested beside the calculator.
I opened my laptop and stared at the glowing screen.
"Construction jobs near me."
"Warehouse hiring."
"General labor."
Dozens of listings appeared.
Some paid less than half of what I was making.
Some were too far away to be feasible with Audrey's school schedule.
Some required experience I didn't have.
I rubbed my tired eyes, my temples throbbing.
Tomorrow.
I'd start applying tomorrow.
Right now, I was too exhausted to think straight.
I closed the laptop, checked on Audrey one last time, and pulled the blanket over her shoulders.
"I'll figure this out, baby," I whispered.
Even if I didn't know how yet.
I turned out the light and headed to bed, hoping tomorrow would bring a little more hope than today had.

dani x g!p reader - multiple orgasms, p in v
~
the living room at lara’s was a complete disaster in the best way. blankets everywhere, three different bags of chips open and half-crushed on the coffee table, someone’s half-drunk boba sweating rings onto the wood. the tv was still playing whatever rom-com they’d put on an hour ago but no one had looked at the screen in at least twenty minutes.

Chapter 26
Practice felt weird that day, weird enough that everyone noticed.
Mostly because YN wasn’t there.
No random coffee appearing halfway through practice. No quiet check-ins. No suspiciously thoughtful snacks showing up after someone casually mentioned craving something once.
Just nothing.
And the room felt emptier because of it.
The girls probably hadn’t realized how they had gotten used to YN.
Sophia checked her phone again, still nothing.
At some point, even the messages had stopped showing as read.
Her stomach twisted uncomfortably.
Because YN always answered, always.
“Wait.” Megan frowned as she looked around the room.
“Where’s YN?”
Nobody answered at first, then Yoonchae decided to speak without looking up.
“She went home.”
Her voice was flat.
The room paused.
“…home?” Lara asked, blinking.
“For a few days.”
Yoonchae took another sip of her drink.
“She wanted a break.”
Sophia froze completely.
“Did—” Her voice caught slightly. “Did you talk to her?”
Yoonchae looked up and for the first time in a long time, she looked annoyed.
“Obviously,” she said. “She’s my sister, Sophia.”
Of course Yoonchae talked to her.
Sophia shifted slightly where she stood.
“…is she okay?”
There was a pause, long enough to feel uncomfortable.
Then Yoonchae sighed, like she was trying very hard to stay calm.
“What do you want me to say?”
The room went quiet because that tone felt new.
Sophia looked down.
“…did she say anything?”
“Not really.”
Yoonchae looked back at her drink.
“She doesn’t really wanna talk.”
That landed badly.
Sophia swallowed.
“…is she mad at me?”
Silence again.
Yoonchae rubbed at her forehead for a second before exhaling slowly.
“I don’t fucking know.”
Complete silence.
Everyone froze.
Because Yoonchae never swore.
Not like that.
Not seriously.
“She looked upset,” Yoonchae said quietly. Her voice was controlled, but harder than usual. “And honestly?”
She paused for a second.
“I’m trying really hard not to say something, i’m gonna regret later.”
“Yoonchae—”
“No.”
Still calm.
Which somehow made it worse.
“She was trying really hard.”
Flowers.
Food.
Remembering little things.
Trying.
“And then you started deciding what’s good for her without actually talking to her.”
Nobody said anything because she was right.
Yoonchae looked away for a second before speaking again.
“She still thinks she did something wrong.”
And suddenly Sophia felt sick.
No.
No, that wasn’t—
Fuck.
Yoonchae stood up and grabbed her water bottle, then paused near the door.
She wasn’t really looking at Sophia.
“Look,” she said quietly. “I love you and i know you got stressed about what people said on the internet. You panicked.”
And somehow that made everything feel worse.
“But that’s my sister.”
Yoonchae finally looked at her, actually looked at her.
Yoonchae sighed again, like she was trying very hard not to say something worse.
“So unless you fix this shit…”
She scoffed quietly.
“And honestly? I don’t even know how you’re gonna do that.”
There was another pause, then her voice softened slightly.
“Don’t ask me about her.”
Nobody said anything after that.
Yoonchae left.
And the room felt colder when she was gone.
