Meet the Witch.

You can call me Violet. I am a 34 year old hedge witch (mainly because I dont know what else to call myself), a mother of 4 gremlins, author, herbalist, artist and whatever else takes my ADHD brain by storm that month.

I am a solitary practitioner who deals with healing, herbs, tarot, tealeaves, runes, candles, folk magic, ancestors, hearth magic, deities, kitchen magic, and probably more that arent coming to mind. I may be solitary but I would love to find community so ask anything.

This blog is probably going to be a book of shadows type thing. Just somewhere I can post what I find interesting and what has worked for me along with information for others.

Nothing like a bonfire on a summer night. Marshmallows, stargazing and fun with family. I will never understand why people want to wash this smell off. Whoever can bottle it let me know.

hikes are very good yes but a deluxe hike is when you are accompanied by a freak with niche nature knowledge. they’re like omg stop there’s a horned valerian varmint beetle here and then you both get to crouch down and look at a bug like :)

YES. I went hiking with a birder a few days ago and that was already really cool, but one of the other people coming along with us was an entomologist who brought his net and also his little Insect Holding Cell cups, and the onslaught of information about birds and insects and arachnids (and plants!) stopped for NO ONE.

Many people think witchcraft starts with spells, but historically it started with observation. Knowing when turtles nested, when certain flowers bloomed, or how streams changed after rain helped people understand the rhythms of the land. That knowledge became folklore, seasonal celebrations, and eventually magical practices. And it’s still very helpful to learn these things. Go outside today and observe something about where you live. Write it down, then go observe that same thing tomorrow or next week, and write down any changes. This is how you can begin to flow with the rhythms of where you are.

Y’all I’m being so serious when I say this: go to the library for witchcraft reasons.

You can usually find books on witchcraft, yes, but there’s also field guides on local foraging and wildlife, cookbooks, books that teach you how to craft and DIY, books about environmental protection and stewardship, books on how to use herbs medicinally, books about other religions, cultures, and spiritual practices. My favorite local library even has a seed swapping program and fantastic resources to research your own family history!

Go to the library for witchcraft. Please. :) <3

I'm a librarian, and the ability for you to continue learning, especially about other ways of viewing the world and your country, is a big part of why right-wingers hate libraries. Libraries are one of the best values for the money you pay in taxes.

I've started painting devotional pieces. I've always loved Persephone even though I don't work with her. She reminds me that people aren't just one thing. You can be the goddess of spring and queen of the underworld. You don't have to choose.

Hey everybody! I know it’s been a minute:

I just want to remind everyone (esp w summer approaching in the northern hemisphere) that when you are looking for shells on a beach that you are doing so ethically.

Many beaches currently have a shelling ban, meaning if you find one, leave it there. This is because shells greatly impact the coastline ecosystem, offering homes and latching points to many organisms, offering minerals as they break down, and creating sand in the middle of a global sand shortage.

Additionally many countries have bans on taking shells in luggage, even by car. It’s important that you ‘know before you go’ on vacation. You can look up a specific beaches laws prior to your visit, and when in doubt leave shells where they are.

For my witches: I know many posts suggest taking shells home as offerings, esp older sources, however due to the nature of the situation it’s best they are left where they are. Rather than taking them, bless them, skip them closer to the waves as offerings, make fun sigils around them in the sand before they are washed away, honor the species they came from as a muse, charge shells in sunlight or moonlight before placing them back. Ideas are infinite, so depending on what you need them for there are beach equivalents that are ocean friendly!

Finally: please don’t introduce foreign materials into the water systems, buying commercial shells just to put back, adding random crystals to beaches, buying shells from beach shops (unethical to begin with) and trying to put them back. Many of these objects either are not native to the area, or have been treated for craft purposes, or like in the cases of beach stores have been brought from international sources. These shells are no longer beach safe, and risk introducing things into the water ways that don’t belong.

We can respect these beauties from a distance, our water ways need us 🙌

I truly believe being able to name the world around you is integral to animism. learn the names of plants and flowers. learn how the rocks and soil you walk over daily form. sit with the streams and rivers, learn where they flow to and from. learn the names others have given, and give them your own as well. animism is interconnectedness, and one simple step is learning the names of your neighbors
