the problem is that this is a series where everyone is like 30 and most of them wouldnt have their ears still.
i got a LOT of thoughts but the important part is that the ‘snake’ series are engineered fighters cloned from big boss and are similar to the zero series in loveless… only that they were never intended to have sacrifices: fighters without sacrifices take on damage themselves, and being essentially blank fighters could be passed around for whichever sacrifice to command. basically, theyre disposable
on the otasune front, otacon is a sacrifice with his own fighter somewhere out there, but when he meets snake, they decide to buck fate and form their own pair, choosing a name for themselves…

i imagine in special groups like foxhound, fighters who havent found their pair are preferred: fighters by nature are commanded, but a fated pair answers to no one but themselves, and if they decided to defect or otherwise rebel, loveless zero style, then there’s nothing anyone else can do. by controlling who gets paired together on the field they can prevent that bond from forming and can maintain control of the fighter
a world without fighting → a world without fighters…? maybe big boss was amassing a nation of fighters – and without sacrifices, no one could control them or tell them what to do
and wouldn’t that explain a lot lmao… a nation of fighters all desperate to either Fight for him or Sacrifice for him and being unable to do either
as a thought experiment it’s fun to imagine the snake series being sacrifices instead: one because that’s what they are in the sense of the word itself (sacrifices, bodies, cannon fodder, to be used), but two because it would make sense in regards to the emphasis on espionage. why else focus on stealth, on avoiding a front-on gunfight
that said, on account of being engineered, much like the loveless zero series, the snakes can ‘lose their names’, and perhaps are even engineered to do so along with accelerated ageing…
after david’s death, otacon doesnt make any serious attempt at finding his fated fighter… snake was always going to be his fighter 💔
