one thing that makes agatha and rio interesting to me is that their conflict isn’t really about what happened to nicky—it’s about what agatha thinks love should have meant.
rio is very clear about what she is. she calls it a job. not a curse, not a personal choice—it’s a job. people die and she’s the one who comes when they do. that’s the structure of the universe as far as she’s concerned.
and agatha knows that.
this isn’t a situation where agatha doesn’t understand the rules. rio doesn’t hide them. she doesn’t pretend she has no role in it. she tells agatha directly what she is and what that means.
but that doesn’t actually make it easier for agatha. in a lot of ways it makes it worse.
because agatha is the kind of person who believes love should override rules.
she would have broken anything for nicky. any law, any boundary, any cosmic structure that tried to take him from her. if the universe had told her “this is simply how things work,” agatha’s first instinct would have been to prove that wrong.
so when rio says being death is her job, agatha doesn’t hear inevitability.
she hears a choice.
because from agatha’s perspective love is supposed to interrupt structure. if you truly love someone, you make the exception. you refuse the rule. you tear the system apart if that’s what it takes.
and rio didn’t do that.
even if rio delayed things. even if she bent the rules further than death was ever supposed to. even if she loved agatha deeply enough to try.
from agatha’s side of it there is still one unbearable fact.
nicky died.
and rio—the person who loved her—was the one who came for him.
so the thing agatha is really confronting in that moment isn’t just grief. it’s the terrifying possibility that the way she understands love might not be universal.
because agatha knows that if the situation were reversed, she would have destroyed the rules of the universe before letting that happen.
and realizing that rio didn’t—or couldn’t—feels, to agatha, exactly the same as learning she wasn’t loved enough.
there's also this added layer when you realize that Agatha's mother (Evanora) was leader of the coven that they were part of in Salem. That Evanora's love was not enough to override her sense of duty and obligation to the safety of the coven to avoid putting Agatha on a death trial. Agatha's own mother called her a monster and did not love her enough (Agatha's perspective) to spare her life.
I imagine a lot of the hurt and anger that she has towards Rio concerning Nicky stems from this trauma, made worse by it because Agatha OF COURSE doesn't care about who or what Nicky is or becomes, because her love for her child supercedes everything else.
And Rio adheres to her job too strongly to have that same outlook, just like Evanora Harkness.

i find it hilarious that joyce and karen definitely and unintentionally acted like sapphic moms of five children during that eighteen month period while they were living together. joyce is like “i can pick up the kids from school today sweetie, it’s okay, it’s on my way home anyway” and karen is like “did they tell you what they wanted for dinner?” they shared midol, went grocery shopping together, and the kids probably confided in joyce when they thought karen wouldn’t understand and vice versa ♡
I would like a classical rendition of Pink Pony Club as John leads Michaela into an artist party where she finally sees her fellow lesbians living it up without shame and John waits for her in his carriage and it’s just a lovely queer joy flashback with John that stays true to his character and shows what an amazing cousin he was
What was the purpose of the scene about queer signals, if Will was never going to receive queer signals? Why was the question concerned with the obviousness of signals, and not the mere presence of them? Why use the term "shared looks" when that was a known call and response on set for Noah and Finn?
What was the meaning of the snowball and avalanche metaphor? Why include that scene at all? Where was the payoff?
You're going to write an entire meta scene on queer signals of attraction, include examples that we have already observed, indicate an eventual pay off... and not let it pay off? Why? To be malicious?
You tell the audience through Will that Mike was just his Tammy this entire time and expect us to believe it? Was Tammy in Robin's video tape? Did Robin know Tammy since she was five? Did Tammy run after her in the rain or recognize her breathing over the radio?
And Will Byers never got kissed. Will Byers witnessed queer love, queer joy, and queer intimacy through a kiss at the beginning of the season, wanting that for himself because he's a romantic... and never even got kissed. Not even by his epilogue boyfriend.
