“ It’s alright commander, the pleasure it’s mine; not many of your countrymen would actually bother with even trying ” she replies, a little amused at how easily he gets flustered “ It’s formal greeting. It literally means ‘enter this place in peace’. It’s a way to say we want no trouble with the person in front of us ” she explains, far more patiently than she thought herself capable, perhaps due the fact he’s actually the first human she has ever encountered that has actually tried to learn their language without ulterior motives.
She looks at the board again, the game it’s clearly on but the man has been clearly playing by himself. Her hand extend to the piece he should move next without even thinking, but she stops herself millimeters before touching it. She tries to find his eyes before proceeding. “ May I? ”
“I know how to say thank you,” he said, a quick attempt to bridge the gap between them. “Ma serannas,” he said proudly, a little smile curving up. He filed away her translation and nodded. “Well then. Andaran atish’an to you as well,” he said, stuttering just a bit on the pronunciation. He smiled fully to drive his point home. He wasn’t that bad, but he was no native speaker.
“Of course you may. It gets boring only playing myself all the time. And when Dorian is occupied, I must occupy myself.” He realized how weird that sounded, so he added (totally not making it weirder), “with chess. Occupy myself with chess.”
