I’m so tired. Here’s a reminder for everyone:
Mirai Nagasu was born in Montebello, California (and raised in Arcadia).
Chloe Kim was born in Long Beach, California (and raised in Torrance).
They are the children of immigrants. They are not immigrants themselves. To call them immigrants is racist. It’s racist to say that because they are Asian and because their parents are not from the U.S., they must be immigrants themselves. It’s just flat out racist, okay? I’m tired of it. Mirai and Chloe were born in the United States. They’re not immigrants. Period. Full stop. The end.
Yesterday, some writer on Twitter got into hot water because she tweeted a video of Mirai and said “Immigrants: They Get the Job Done.” They. She called Mirai an immigrant, even though she was born in the US. And then she tried to back-track and failed miserably, but she’s still trying to say she was right.
Today, I heard NBC cut up a quote from Chloe. NBC’s primetime coverage had her saying that “winning a gold in my home country is amazing” even though what she REALLY said was that “winning a gold in their [their being her parents’] home country is amazing.” She was not calling South Korea her home country, and from the sound of that original quote it doesn’t even appear that she thinks of South Korea as her home country. To cut up that quote and make it sound like South Korea is her home country is racist. SHE WAS LITERALLY BORN IN LONG BEACH.
I’m so fucking tired of this. Asian Americans are winning medals and gaining national recognition for their efforts and you still can’t see us as anything other than immigrants.
