Concertina mock up part 3
One of my images as part of Shutter Hub’s ‘Everyday delight’ exhibition
Synopsis
My project consists of an archive of images I have taken over the last 6 months on both my 35mm film camera and mobile phone. The images consists of documentary/still-life photographs that I have taken on location. When shooting the project, I focused on subject matter that was in a state of change.
My final major project is titled, ‘This soon shall pass’. The title is reference to a mantra I say to myself when I become anxious in a situation. I often berate myself because I will often wish time away as I try to manage my stress. Social events and completing my degree in my mind have become obstacles, walls that I need to rapidly get through. This is why I believe that I am fascinated and enthralled by documenting and freezing time in images. The subject matter that I am drawn towards are often moment or objects that are in a state of change. It is evident that these images reflect upon my desire to freeze time and appreciated small moments around me. This is significant because the images that I have taken are of ‘moments’ so it is easy for me to recall where I was and what was happening when I took each photograph. When I was sequencing the photographs, I was not only thinking of visual cues from one image to the next but I was also thinking of my recollection of taking them. The sequencing in my project demonstrates trail of thought as you move from one image to the next. An example of this can seen between the image of the fish and the cat lying akimbo on the bed. They are related because one is consumed by the other but they are also visually linked as they form the same shape on the page.
This archive of images will be printed as three editions. All of the editions will be concertina books bound with a cloth book cover. The size of the books will be 5 inches by 7 inches which is similar to a large UK postcard size. From testing the sizing of my book, I was able to decide on these measurements that give the images justice but also create an inward experience with the images. The book will be easy to hold in the hand so there will still be a level of intimacy between the viewer and the images. I will be printing the concertinas on Hahnemuhle glossy 260gsm paper. I have previously test printed on Hahnemuhle paper which worked very well for my images, including the images I have taken on my mobile phone. The weight of the paper I have chosen has been selected so that I will be able to fold the paper for the concertinas.
I decided on concertina binding because I want people who view my work to be able to create their own interpretations of my images. The sequence can easily be manipulated by whoever is viewing the book. The images can also be viewed as different combinations of diptychs and triptychs. Even when I look back on the sequence I can see different connections between each photograph and this opens up different types of dialogue between the subject matter. An individual’s interpretation of the images and their sequence will be determined by their own combination of their own experience and viewpoints when looking at the subject matter.
For each of the book covers, I plan to craft my own book covers to fit the dimensions and style of my publications. As the books are concertinas, the book cover will not have a spine to allow for movement of the sequence inside the book. I also plan to emboss the front covers of the books in a metallic foil with the publication title.
In the final gallery space, I plan to present my project as the three edition books. I will have some supporting prints on the wall so that I can demonstrate my printing ability and how the images work as individual prints. The publications will be placed on evenly spaced plinths that are quite wide so that it each book can be opened and it is possible to view the sequence as an expanded concertina
Due to the development of Coronavirus during the last term there have been some limitations to my project. The large majority of my project had already been shot but it is the final presentation of my project that has been impacted. Fortunately, I have been able to create PDF mockups of my concertinas but I have been unable to use my chosen paper and consider creating my book covers. I was also unable to create a final mock-up that was on Hahnemuhle glossy paper with the correct weight.
Reflection
At the start of this major project I set out to record mortality, I had no idea how to articulate this nor how I would create physical imagery for it. I quickly realised that directly photographing mortality directly with the camera was a subject that would be something that I would not fully be able to relate my personal experiences to. If I hadn't experienced this how would I be able to sets out to document it in a truthful way?
However, during the project I have realised that my imagery addresses my fears surrounding my own mortality. The photographs I take consists of temporary moments that can never be repeated. The title I have chosen is reference to a mantra I say to myself when I become anxious in a situation. I often berate myself because I will often wish time away as I try to manage my stress. I believe this influences how frequently I question and reflect upon my own mortality. The subject matter that I am drawn towards are often moment or objects that are in a state of change. It is evident that these images reflect upon my desire to freeze time and appreciated small moments around me.
