I don’t think enough people realize that if these ID verification bills pass, it’s much worse than the government just being able to see what we’re saying and doing on the internet.
It’s about one data breach making it so anybody can find anyone’s real life identity, right down to their home address, in an instant. It’s about banning you from buying groceries or contacting friends or doing your taxes online if that’s the only way you’re able just because you said, idk, you dislike the president or something, one time several years ago.
Y’all remember when people started realizing that tickets — like for planes for example — go up in price if you look at the page more than once? It’ll get MUCH worse if they start personalizing that shit based on your perceived interests.
The crime of pirating content will become enforceable by law. Free speech will be stripped and easier than ever to prosecute for. You’ll risk your hyperconservative parents finding out what kinds of fanfic you read, or your abusive partner finding out that you tried to seek help and search for a way out, with just a few clicks and a data breach. You’d lose out on jobs in an already abysmal job market for the same reason.
This wouldn’t just be causing minor inconveniences, this would change lives for the worse.
We already live in a dystopian society as of late and we need to stop things like this before it’s too much to recover from. Talk to the people in your life about digital ID and its dangers because I can almost promise you that they have no idea it’s happening, and they’ll just comply and think nothing of it when they’re told they need to put their government ID access their non-anonymous social media, or to read a news article, or to activate their new phone. Organize with your peers or local groups to petition and/or protest against it.
Be as annoying as you can to your reps via phone, email, fax, or even showing up to their local offices in-person. If your friends or family aren’t interested in getting involved but give their permission, be loud on their behalf as well. Remember, your reps work for you — not the other way around.
It was NEVER about protecting the children. It was ALWAYS about control. We NEED to stop this.
