It took me a long time to get here. To write this to all of you, and particularly to myself. It took me a long time to realize what I have been missing for the past two years and a couple of months. Last month, exactly 30 days ago, for the first time in my life, I took a huge step without my parents knowing what exactly I was doing. I submitted a resignation letter to “The Firm” where I work as a Corporate Lawyer.
Why am I doing this? What am I going to do next? How will I survive without having a proper “Job”? How will I live up to my parents expectations of me, heck people around me? How can I be happy? These questions have been looping in my head over and over again, poking my brain until sometimes it really hurts.
I have been asked too many times by my parents of what I want to do in this life - what I want to become of a person in the future. The thing is, I have been over worrying about my future too much, I forgot how to really live in the present. For a second I really forgot how to actually do things that I loved so much.
I have missed too many social gatherings. I have not done any of my hobbies in the past two years. I cannot remember when was the last time, I didn’t put a swear word on Monday. I may have lost my appetite for life. The worst part is, I haven’t really found what I’m passionate about.
I feel like 23 years of life so far has burdened me with a lot of responsibilities. I turned out to be this awkward woman, when I used to think of myself as a happy-go-lucky kind of girl. I find it hard to connect with people - especially reconnecting with old friends. I forgot how to really feel the euphoria when listening to music. I always feel that people are attacking me if they’re not on the same page with me, and so on. Overall, I am certainly not happy of this person I had become. THIS is why I believe, I need a turning point.
Wait, what? How can a job turned you into such a horrible person? I for one must admit that, each and every single day you do certain things you simply does not enjoy can make you a cynical bitch. You repeat this ritual you are obliged to do, because of course, it pays the bills very well! Moreover, it gives you the freedom to buy things you don’t really need. However, after buying those things - you are not even an inch away from being fulfilled.
What you may not realize is, you may be riding a uni-cycle, juggling your high hopes and dreams on your way to unhappiness.
So (another parable I have put together), instead of cruising this sea of life heading to some dystopia being sea-sick, maybe we should all just need to lay on the beach, sip our iced tea, put on our sunglasses, feel the ocean breeze and... just be young and stupid (again) for a while! You cannot be mature and wise if you have never been young and stupid, right?
Anyway, I’m not saying that every job does this trick on you. I just feel that I need to share it with some of you guys, IF, maybe any of you feel the same way as I do. I suggest you to maybe take a break, travel, do the things you have been longing to do, or simply enjoy your time and relax. Learn to live your life again and be passionate.
I think that’s what I’m going to do for now. Wish me luck!
