Just to clarify something about the new WTNV theme - there was no “agenda” behind it, i.e. it was not made to sound “edgy and new” nor was it made to indicate anything specific about the show’s plot or any characters. Joseph asked me if I wanted to make a new version of the theme that would start being used in what is now the 4th year or “season” of the show and didn’t give me any instructions beyond that - in fact at the time that I made it, I knew nothing whatsoever about the plot of the episode it was first used in. 

The song is influenced partly by the vibes of the area I was in when I wrote it (Hoxton, London) and partly by what I was reading at the time (The Schirmer Inheritance by Eric Ambler), but is named after characters from a LeCarre novel mostly as a reference to the original song, which is similarly named.  

Note also that the original “theme" of the show, the Ballad of Fiedler and Mundt, was also not written with anything Night Vale related in mind, in fact it was written several years before Night Vale existed, and was similarly influenced by a book (The Spy Who Came In From The Cold by John LeCarre) - in fact, that song was originally, in my head, meant to be a score for the opening scene of that novel, in some sort of animated film version that exists only in my head - specifically, the piano comes in when Karl Reimeck is shot off his bicycle, then the rest of the song is a sort of montage of Leamas’ journey back to London.

In class we had to draw illustrations for an existing story, and I chose Night Vale! I’m really not confident at all with painting and it was my first attempt in years… But now I can at least say I’m a bit better than I was before!
