Thinking back, Door was one of the first crews I got when I started Reverse 1999 two years ago. At first I just thought "wow, this game has so many non-human characters. Amazing" and that's it. Didn't really care more. It took me a while to realize that his medium is 'the other' and what a coincidence! My thesis theme was also otherness. Then I started to use him, turned out he's quite ok as an intellect crew for the very beginners.

Though his calm voice lines and mysterious backstory were the reason I've been liking him and keeping drawing fan arts of him this long. Not sure who his English VA actually is, but I think they did a really great job. I like the other language versions too. Then his mysteriousness. What does it mean he searches for 'the era of truth'? Who the hell was he before he got broken, a magic mirror/door in the Cretaceous period? Does it have anything to do with the origin of arcanum? Why he's named Door anyway? He hasn't appeared in any stories or released the anecdote yet, so we still have no clue at all! Have to believe they'll feed us any of his secret backbone before they end the service one day

Reverse 1999 Character Analysis: Door

Being a singular piece of glass, Door is perhaps the game's simplest yet most unique character. Instead of clothing items like the other characters, he instead has images from the past that he reflects. It's stated that Door can control what images he reflects to bring comfort to the viewer. This ties into his self reflective nature.

Not much is known about his origins. His character story reveals that he's been around since at least the prehistoric era and originally broke off from a piece of a mirror in the sky. Door is classified as a regular arcanist rather than an awakened so we know that he isn't simply a piece of glass that has gained awareness. Some theorize that the mirror he broke away from is actually a chunk of reality itself.

Door knows that his purpose in life is to reflect his surroundings, yet he yearns for something more. He hates to see others in pain and prefers to show others happy reflections to spark joy in them. This can sometimes backfire when people mistake what he shows them as a clandestine future and become disillusioned. This troubles Door so much that he vomits at the thought (somehow). Door is pacifistic person who only wishes to bring others happiness. His battle victory quote even expresses remorse for his enemies.

"They have witnessed their failure with their own eyes ... though it was too cruel to be my intention."

His arcane skill seems to involve refracting light to turn it into a beam and shooting shards of himself at his opponent. It's implied he also has the ability to regenerate since he's perfectly fine after using the shard attack and one of character animations shows him being cracked. His ultimate has him sacrifice his life just to give others more moxie, reflecting his caring nature which puts others before himself.

Door is inspired by the mirror featured in the Snow Queen fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. The mirror in that story was crafted by the devil to enhance the ugly qualities in whatever it reflected. After shattering into countless pieces, these pieces would enter the eyes and hearts of other people so that they could only see the ugliness of the world. Door is a direct opposite of this since he prefers showing beautiful images.

To my knowledge, Door has yet to appear in any story event whatsoever and has yet to receive an annecdote, so he's the most playable mysterious character besides from Voyager. I'd love to learn about about the implications of him being a piece of reality and how st pavlov even found him in the first place. It's feels like a huge waste for him to be a simple 2 star character. There's so many lore ideas to explore with him. Since he presumably existed before the storm, could be possibly be immune to being reversed or would reversing him send him back to the mirror? Has the phenomena of this "world mirror" been studied by anyone yet?

I wish r1999 was the type of game where low tier characters received high tier alt versions. Maybe one day Door will finally get his time to shine.
