UR Croissant Souls are considered a bizarre and unique case amongst Food Souls. First of all, they are not ābornā to their rank, rather they ascend to it from their lineās original SR rank, to a level far beyond what can be achieved through typical means. Secondly, in order to do so, they must take on another attribute, usually that of a human concept that society values greatly.
These select few Croissant Souls earn their ascension by performing exceptional feats of power, and if the Academy notices, theyāre brought in for a ritual that greatly boosts their Soul Power, among other things. No one really knows exactly what happens, but those who knew the Croissants in question prior to ascension say that they return from it āgreatly changedā.
Aside from being exceptionally powerful, ascended Croissantsā feathers possess properties that allow for Contracts to be formed between a Food Soul and Attendant without the need for Summoning. This has lead to poachers targeting them to sell the feathers on the black market, and many āstandardā SR Croissants have been caught in the crossfire as well.
Only three ascended Croissants currently exist, embodying faith, love, and justice respectively. Faith currently leads the Holy See, and Love is an ambassador for peace across the continent. Justice went AWOL over a decade ago. The Academy is still offering rewards to anyone who can locate her, so that she can return to her position as the Judge of the International Court.

Do you think that ārankā is an important thing in FS lives? Cause like, letās admit it, there will always be *those people* who think theyāre above R and M souls and want exclusively SRs and URs. There must have been a lot of abandoned Ms and Rs, right? And then, I wonder if these ranks get taken seriously in FS world? Cause SP Rice mentioned ppl respecting her a lot now thatās sheās SP, and I wonder āHmm, would Rs respect their āhigher upsā, like SRs and URs? Would URs expect respect?ā Idk man.

I think Iāve very briefly touched on the subject of humans valuing M and R Souls less than SR and UR Souls, but Iāve never really thought about what would happen if that mindset bled its way into Food Souls too.
If Iām honest though I can see that happening! I doubt this classism in amongst Food Souls as a species was built into them, I am more than convinced that this is a learned behaviour. UR and SR Food Souls are routinely adopted by more powerful and influential humans, while R and M Souls are more often than not working in normal restaurants around Tierra, which we see in game. When was the last time you saw a Sukiyaki Soul working in a kitchen? Sure someone might put him there for a laugh, but more often than not youāll see the Rice Souls, the Toast Souls, the Pudding Soulsā¦
So of course that class difference is going to start to have an impact on the Food Souls themselves, so I reckon youāre quite right, anon, some SR Souls and UR Souls would probably start to see themselves as above the Rās and the Mās, purely because of how theyāve been treated. Sadly I think a good example of this might be Spaghetti, since he talks a bunch aboutĀ ācommonersā and whatnot, and the Pasta Platoon is made up of, guess what? SRās and URās. If thereās going to be a Soul who thinks himself above other members of his species, itās probably going to be him. Whereas when you look at someone like Peking, youāll see that he has every single rank of Soul in his little circle.
So yes I think youāre right and that ranks are indeed taken seriously in amongst Food Souls, and I expect that quite a few SRās and URās would expect some level of respect from Mās and Rās, and the Mās and Rās themselves would feel obliged to respect them, because of all the instances of SRās and URās being contracted by humans in positions of power.Ā
I hope you donāt mind me butting in, But there is a canon example of this, at least where human perspectives are concerned. If I remember rightly (which might not be the case lol), Ume Ochazuke was highly valued by her high-class Attendant until her true ārankā was revealed. Sure, the word wasnāt used, but I seem to remember she was treated very poorly once it came to light that she wasnāt as powerful as everyone thought she was. Pretty sure she got locked up in a dungeon cell because her Attendant couldnāt stand to look at her, or thought sheād been leading him on.
I definitely need to reread her backstory, but I think thatās the gist of it. I donāt remember reading anything about Food Souls having the same pretentions, but Ghetti is definitely the kind of jackass to act like heās better than everyone else just because he has an āSā taped onto his rank. Besides having a major stick up his ass, the only other reason I can come up with for him building the Platoon almost entirely of high-rank Souls is because the high-class twats he rescues them from are even more obnoxious about that shit.
If the Holy See has a superiority complex over the fact that half of them are brown-nosing The Lord, and Time Pavillion are snobs over how much money they have, then itās a guarantee that plenty of Food Souls are assholes over their ranks. Hell, I wouldnāt be surprised if there were supremacist groups built around the idea that SRs and URs are hot shit and R Souls are subservient dirt. It happens in real life, why not Tierra?
Sticks & Stones - The Fallout of a Severed Contract
((This is largely headcanon backed up by some canon stuff.))
Iāve had this in mind for a few days now, but @stardomyx helped me develop the idea further and now itās a post. Yeet.
As a whole, the death of a Food Soulās Attendant is nasty business. A Contract binds together two souls, which is pretty heavy business, especially considering one party is supposed to be a magical living weapon.
We know that canonically, when a Contract is severed (most commonly by the Attendantās death), itās usually messy, and often harmful to the Food Soul. When Realgar Wineās Attendant was burned alive by Peking, his Soul Power destabilised and it nearly killed him. Hell, if things had gone differently, Realgar could have basically become a walking cloud of mustard gas. Another good example of this sort of thing is Raindrop Cake, who we know has been left paralysed due to his Attendantās death, which is likely a long-term consequence of the Contract being severed so suddenly combined with shit mental health and guilt.
My basic point is that severing a Food Soulās Contract tends to cause a lot of physical damage, especially if the Attendant dies violently or unexpectedly, and it got me thinking about what kind of damage it leaves. I already adopted @stardomyxās headcanon regarding severance scars, but apparently Iām a monster and wanted to take it up a notch.
I feel like when a Food Soulās Soul Power destabilises after a Contract is severed, it fucks up their most valuable asset. Support Souls canāt heal, and may actually cause harm instead. Magic Soulsā power becomes unstable and uncontrollable, which is incredibly dangerous, especially with the more powerful Souls like Peking Duck and Realgar Wine. Defence and Strength Souls, whose power lies in their physical ability, suffer symptoms of degenerative disorders such as osteogenesis imperfecta (aka brittle bone disease), severe asthma and muscular dystrophy.
The concept of a Food Soul losing their most crucial asset, their key means of defending others, is probably one of the most devastating things to them. Tierra is probably rife with horror stories about Food Souls who never recovered from this sort of thing. Healers who risk killing someone when they try to help, Strength and Defence units who canāt do what they do best because every time they try they break every bone in their body, or are left bedridden for the rest of their lives because of how badly their muscles have wasted away. Hell, thatās probably why Raindrop Cake is still wheelchair bound when you summon him; heās one of those cases where the Soul never recovered and either his legs canāt hold his weight anymore or he keeps breaking them. Granted, itās probably quite rare for these effects to be permanent; Iām sure the Academy wouldnāt be so stupid as to create Food Souls, little more than weapons to them, who donāt bounce back from this sort of thing, however trauma is never as easy or consistent as anyone would like it to be.

You know what, B being around kids is something I really havenāt thought much about, my first thought is that heād be pretty wary of them purely for their sake, sinceĀ āhey youāre small, Iām very big, I produce a LOT of fire, I could hurt you,ā so Easter Egg having an interest in mechanics may be a stepping stone towards breaking down that wariness.Ā

Iāve talked very briefly about Food Soul ranks and rarity.
M to UR, with M-Rank Souls being more than plentiful, and UR-Rank Souls being one of a kind for various reasons (which will probably be discussed in another post.) But in this post Iād quite like to talk about the M-Rank Souls, and how in being the first and most practical choice for a new Cooking Attendant to make, the methods of their formation are less than humane.
So I was thinking - dangerous, I know - about the physical differences between the Food Soul classes. For example how Strength class Souls may be built like fucking tanks, and Magic classes sometimes look a little more Elfen-like in their features and physiques.
And because we have a few Food Souls who have animal traits (Milk, Steak, Bonito etc etc.) I would bet you that a few humans - maybe in the Academy and the Guild - might think of these different physiques as similar to sexual dimorphism found in animals; except it would be totally based on what their powers and skills are rather than gender.
As a species, the behaviour and world view of a Food Soul is far different to that of a humanās - obviously - but biologically thereās also a huge difference. Really the whole Food Soul species is a mishmash of animal, humanoid and Elfen traits, so would it be too ridiculous to suggest that their bodies mirror that of the animal kingdom more than they do humanity?
Idk this has been in my head for a while but I apologise if Iāve explained it poorly. I am planning to do a bigger post on this bc as a species, Food Souls really do interest me so much. Let me know your thoughts if you want!
