Casey Novak has a boyfriend. He kinda sucks. Olivia has a crush, and she’d never do anything to get in the way of Casey’s happiness, but God, she could love her better than that.
“He does love me,” Casey said simply.
As if that was being questioned.
“Yes,” Olivia exhaled. And she could have left it there. Could have let it be some half-assed agreeance to appease Casey’s dignity. But she didn’t leave it there; she felt an itch to say something more, something damning. “I just don’t think he does it very well.”

You glanced at your watch. 5:45 pm. The end of your workday was near but it had also never felt further away. The Friday leading up to an entire weekend off (a luxury in the SVU) was always filled with anticipation, and this Friday was no different. You and Casey had booked a cabin upstate for your anniversary weekend and nothing was getting in your way of an uninterrupted 48 hours with your girlfriend. You’d both planned a few activities for Saturday, but mostly wanted to spend the weekend on the couch with one another: reading, watching TV, just enjoying one another’s company.
Olivia came and sat at her desk which was directly across from yours. “Six o’clock can’t come fast enough,” she said, beginning to organize the paperwork on her desk. You took a sip of your coffee, nodding your head.
“Preaching to the choir over here.”
“You doing anything fun this weekend?”
You couldn’t help but smile. “Actually, Casey and I rented a cabin upstate this weekend. It’s our anniversary on Sunday so we figured it would be nice to get away. We both made sure to clear our schedules so we could basically be hermits together. She’s picking me up outside at 6:00 in the rental car.”
“Wow, that sounds so nice. How long has it been now, five years?” Olivia asked. You nodded.
“Yep, five years on Sunday since we became ‘official.’ It feels goofy at our age to track that kind of thing, but I’m planning something special for the weekend.”
Olivia quirked her eyebrow up. “Oh? Do tell.”
You reached under your desk for the weekend bag you’d brought to work, unzipping the front pocket and pulling out a velvet ring box. Olivia gasped when you opened it. Inside sat a small oval-cut diamond engagement ring. It was simple yet unique enough that you knew Casey would love it.
“Oh my god, y/n, it’s beautiful,” Olivia said, taking the box delicately. “So you’re finally proposing?” She handed the box back to you.
“Sure am. I’m planning on doing it tomorrow night. We both agreed we’d like to propose to one another but at different times, keeping it a surprise.” You looked at the ring again and smiled before putting it back in your bag as your phone chimed. “Well, my chariot awaits. You can reach me by my cell but…try not to need me? Pretty please?” You looked at your colleague with puppy dog eyes.
Olivia laughed. “Of course, go on, enjoy your weekend. I expect a photo immediately after you propose, kay?” She called after you.
You stepped outside the precinct into the chilly October air, spotting Casey in the rental car just up the block. You opened the trunk and threw your bag in before getting in the passenger side.
“Uber for y/n?” You joked as you slid into the seat, eliciting a chuckle from Casey.
“Oh my god, you’re so lame,” the redhead said, leaning over to give you a quick kiss. “Hi.”
“Hi,” you replied quietly. “I’m so excited to be a passenger princess.” Casey laughed again, starting up the car and pulling onto the street. The drive out of the city was drama-free, for once, marked by you and Casey chatting about your respective work days. Although she still worked in the DA’s office, she stopped trying SVU-related cases shortly after you had disclosed your relationship to your respective bosses. So you both always listened to each other intently as you recounted your days.
About an hour into the drive, Casey reached over and put her hand on your thigh, rubbing it gently. You took her hand in yours, giving it a kiss. “Did you even notice the kind of car that they gave me?” She asked you.
“Honestly I was too busy looking at the hot driver the rental company sent I hadn’t even noticed.” You looked over at the steering wheel for the car’s logo. A Subaru. You laughed out loud. “Was it between this and a U-Haul?”
“Well, they knew we’d already done that the first year we were dating, so they only offered the Subaru for year five.”
“Okay yeah, that’s fair,” you replied. “I’m really glad we’re doing this, Case.” The redhead took your hand again.
“Me too, my love,” she said.
The scenery of upstate New York couldn’t have been more perfect; the leaves had fully turned for fall, the sky was clear and the sun was shining, the air was crisp and cool.
You had decided to stop for groceries before getting to the cabin in order to maximize your cosy-stay-at-home-time over the next 48 hours. Finally, Casey turned the car onto a side street off the main road and into the driveway of a small cabin.
“Here we are,” she said, turning off the car. “Home for the weekend.” You both began to unload the Subaru, Casey insisting on taking all the grocery bags in one trip. You grabbed both of your respective duffle bags.
“Babe, it’s okay we can make two trips,” you said as Casey struggled with the six paper bags on her arms. She shook her head.
“I can do it in one, have a little faith.” Yep, this was your Casey. Stubborn but incredibly self-assured.
This is the woman you wanted to spend the rest of your life with.
Once the groceries were unpacked, comfy clothes had been donned, and dinner had been made, you sat on the couch with glasses of red wine, you on the corner of the chaise with your girlfriend in the crook of your arm. “This is so nice,” Casey said quietly. Putting her glass on the coffee table next to yours, she pulled you in for a soft, slow kiss. You gently cupped her cheek in your hand, returning the tenderness of the kiss. Casey pulled away, looking into your y/e/c eyes, getting lost as she has so many times before. “Can you believe it’s been five years already?”
You smiled at her, shaking your head. “It feels like I’ve known you forever, but also like it was just yesterday that we were those two awkward coworkers unsure how to be around each other.” Those early days were marked by coffee and pastry deliveries (“I’m just being nice”) and excuses to go sit in her office (“We have a lot of stuff to sort out for the case”), with an underlying, simmering tension that eventually could no longer be ignored.
Casey sat up, taking your hands in hers. “Y/n, I love you. So much. And I know that I want to spend the rest of my life with you, no matter where that ends up taking us. These past five years have been the best of my life. If we’re being honest, I didn’t feel like a fully realized person until I met you. You’ve shown me sides of myself that had been so deeply buried for so long. You’ve also shown me what it means to love someone with my entire being while receiving that same love in return.” Casey’s eyes were welling up now. “I don’t know what I did to deserve you, but I am so glad you’re mine.” Hand slightly shaking, she reached into her cardigan pocket, pulling out a velvet ring box. You put your hand over your mouth, your own eyes welling up with tears. “Y/n, will you marry me?”
You nodded your head, words unable to form in your mouth other than yes, yes, yes.
Casey delicately took the green sapphire ring from the box. She took your left hand in hers, sliding the ring on. You took her face in your hands, kissing her passionately. When you pulled back, you brushed the tears from her cheeks. “Easiest yes of my life, Casey Novak.”
Casey let out a sigh of relief. “Thank god.”
It was now or never. “Wait here a second,” you told her, going into the bedroom. You returned with your hands behind your back before producing the velvet box that held her ring in it. It was now Casey’s turn to be surprised.
“Casey Eleanor Novak, will you do me the honor of marrying me back?” You said, sitting down on the couch. She was giggling through her tears.
“Wow, we really are that couple, huh?” She said. “Obviously. Obviously I will marry you back.” You took the ring from the box and put it on her left ring finger. Casey admired the small diamond. “Nicely done, y/l/n.” You took a second to admire the ring on your own finger as well.
“Yeah you didn’t do too bad yourself, Novak.” The two of you were ribbing each other while fully knowing that you’d both picked the perfect ring for the other. You gathered Casey up in your arms for a tight hug. “I love you so much,” you said, dropping a kiss into her red hair. She looked up and stroked your cheek.
“I love you too, baby,” she said, sitting up to properly kiss you.
“Oh, wait, I promised Liv I’d send her a picture after I proposed,” you said, grabbing your phone.
“Speaking of Liv…I might have actually told her that this was happening this weekend,” Casey said, a cheeky smile on her face.
“What?! Wow she was completely poker faced when I told her this afternoon.”
Casey put her hands up. “I needed a little advice on the ring and figured who better to ask than your other partner. Happy wife, happy life.” You laughed again, kissing her. “Okay now let’s take this picture so I can do what I really wanted to do this weekend — ravish every inch of you,” she said, kissing your neck.
You and Casey put your heads together for a selfie, each holding up your left hand and beaming into the camera. You sent it off to Olivia with the message
