"Autistics take things literally."
Not all of us.
But I do, often but not all the time. However, you will rarely ever notice. Because I've been called stupid so many times for not just "getting it". Even though, from my point of view it's you who are messing up the communication.
Because of this I will ask you a billion questions to make sure I understand what you're saying to me. I am terrified of getting it wrong.
Because this is rarely a cutesy matter of misunderstanding. It can mean extreme embarrassment, loss of friendship or loss of a job.
God yeah, that fkn sucks and I'm glad you said it, though this bring mentioned does give me the opportunity to ask if, like, the specific "lighter side" of it I experience also happens to anyone?
Like, when someone sarcastically jokes with me, some part of my mind does get it, but somehow my mouth is practically compelled to respond as if I'm taking it completely seriously?
It's like that part of my brain totally takes over my reactions even though I also understand their intentions. Does anyone else have this specific flavor of reaction or am I a bit unique here?
Thanks, sorry, don't mean to branch off from the original topic too far, but I've literally never found a place to ask this before so I was hoping this topic is close enough
I 1000% have that reaction.
It usually happens when I'm more tired, and it's almost like I have two parts of my brain: one part recognises it as a joke, and the other part is taking it apart and analysing it seriously. And the second part wins, because taking it as a joke is actually more difficult for me than it is to try to study it.
Like...humour for me is almost a learned process, and when I'm tired that takes a back seat.
