 The real hero of the Nome Serum Run of 1925 was not the ever so popular Balto, but the agouti colored husky named Togo, another sled dog owned by sled runner Leonhard Seppala (photographed with Togo above).

Togo was the real star of the run, leading his team in leg of the run totaling an astounding 261 miles/420 km which was five times as far as any of the other teams (including Balto’s). Togo was a true hero and lived to the age of 12. 

Unfortunately, Balto got all the fame instead of Togo, even though Togo more closely resembles the animated version of Balto than Balto himself does. 

A true hero and savior, Togo deserves more credit than he received after running the hardest and longest leg of the Serum Run in 1925, saving the lives of many.

The “blue tri” pitbull; a pit that is produced by parents carrying recessive genes for tri colors. While a controversial topic in the bully world, they certainly are a stunning coloration with their “blue” or “purple” color and tan point coats.

Smooth Collie or Rough Collie? (And no, they didn't just shave one for the heck of it)

Such beautiful dogs. These two are sable, but there are four standard colors that these dogs can come in.

Go ahead and take a guess as to what this is. Wolf? German Shepherd/wolf mix? Malamute mix? Coyote mix?

Wrong. This is an American Alsatian dog.

For my Biology class, I had to compose a research project over something genetics related. Naturally, I jump to dogs because...I love them.

I started researching the Dire Wolf and found a project that was meant to bring the Dire Wolf "back to life."

The American Alsatian was created for the purpose of reconstructing the Dire Wolf as well as giving people a canine that looks like a wolf, has the size and color of a wolf, but the behavior and good nature of a fully tamed dog.

This breed has absolutely no wolf blood in them. None. Not a single drop. These dogs were bred over years with starting stock of German Shepherds, English Mastiff,  Alaskan Malamute, and several others. All credit for the breed goes to Lois Schwarz. She is an amazing person and I have talked to her via email several times asking questions and doing interviews for my project.

This is a breed of dog I've wanted ever since I saw the movie Cats and Dogs. The dog named Shep was one of these; an Anatolian Shepherd.

They are beautiful animals and although I've never personally met one, I've heard good things about them. Their colors and fluffy tails are what intrigue me the most; black mask, tan bodies, and slightly curled tails.

I know how popular German Shepherds are, and for good reason. They are intelligent, hard working, friendly (with proper socialization at a young age) and absolutely gorgeous animals.

 Remember that movie All Dogs Go To Heaven? I've always wanted my own personal Charlie, and some day, I will have him. Granted, the Charlie in the movie was part GSD and part Collie, but that's okay. One day I will have this beautiful breed in my possession...

Another of my favorite shepherd breeds; the Belgian Shepherd. There are four types of Belgian Shepherds, and this one is a Tervuren Belgian Shepherd. Beautiful animals that almost look like longer haired versions of German Shepherds. But they aren't.

Their colors are beautiful, the Tervurens having tan and black features and almost always a black face/mask. The puppies are adorable, too.

So I've decided to start this blog with one of my favorite breeds: The Australian Shepherd. Beautiful dogs, extremely intelligent and good natured. I had a red tri aussie named Archie, and for five years, he was my best friend in the world.

These dogs are so easily trained and ready to work. Great pets but they do have a natural herding instinct, especially when around small children or other animals.

If I wasn't so heartbroken over my best dog friend's death, I would get another one ASAP. I still really appreciate the breed and love every one I've ever met.
