The thing A wants most is to have a place where he feels like he belongs. Up until this point in the movie he has desperately wanted someone to fight to keep him around. In this moment though, A finally knows that he is loved and all he wants is to protect the people who gave that to him, even if it means that he'll die just so they can get away. He is *asking* B to abandon him because suddenly the thought of him being abandoned is much less painful than the thought of B dying. But B tells him in no uncertain terms that they will stay together, even if that means they will die. These two spend them whole movie fighting for each other and with each other and honestly the things they say don't hold a candle to the way they act in terms of conveying that they love each other (i mean it's a martial arts movie, 3/4 of the character developement is supppsed to happen during the fights anyway). At the end of thr film they are sitting on a roof, B is smoking a cigarette. A holds out his hand for the cigarette and instead of just giving it to him like a normal person, B looks at the hand, looks at the cigarette, and then places the cigarette directly at A's mouth, like seriously why would they do that if they didn't want me to think thst these two either are fucking or wanna fuck. And the whole goddamn movie is like that! Point is i need someone to write like a 300k sequel fic where B is the boss and A is his second in comand with chronic guard dog-itis (also yes, a very compelling argument could be made for a poly relationship between the main four, i just couldn't find a quote to submit them with)

CONTEXT BELOW CUT
Quote 50 - A and his crew had cut down some trees that, unbeknownst to them, were sacred to B's people, the [people]. They got expelled from their land for this reason, but right as they were leaving, it was discovered that they did it to stop a deadly disease that could spread from plants to people. Upon learning this B ran into the ocean to tell this quote to A. They never saw eachother again.
[island] would end up being knocked into the sky later on, and getting conquered by the sky people, making them loose the bell. When A came back, he got accused of lying about the place and got executed for it, wondering about B's well-being before he died. B would die in battle thinking about how his friend would be able to find them without the bell. Centuries later the bell would get knocked by the protagonist and A's descendant was able to hear it's toll coming from the sky, finally getting peace after learning his ancestor wasn't lying.

there's never like. an explanation for why he said that. he was just asked if he has a girlfriend and he replies he's got his male partner. in the original draft for the script he drops an actual "I love you" also but that's not canon anymore unfortunatelyÂ
