Alice? {private}
Normally I’m not a fan of hugging, but I guess I can make an exception because your hair smells really nice.
It is not going to be fine. I could eat every piece of junk food in this castle and it’s not— it won’t— it doesn’t change the fact that I can’t breathe without him. And I hate that, I hate that I feel like if I don’t tell my heart to keep beating, it’ll literally stop, and how did I let him in so deep that he’s my heartbeat and my every breath, and godric, this is pathetic.
I won't tell anyone about it if you won't tell anyone about it.
Hey, no, look at me. You are not pathetic. You are a kickass doctor who reserves the right to cry over a stupid guy, everyone cries over stupid guys at some point, it's practically a rule of life.
And this feeling you have? The one where you can't breathe? It's temporary. I know it doesn't feel like that right now, but I promise. It's temporary.
Alice? {private}
He said he’s done. So… you know…. going by the conventional definition of the word d-done…
It’s okay. It’s okay. I’m gonna wake up in a minute. But we should— we should get the cream cheese while we— while we wait for that to happen.
Right. Okay.
Don't twitch or break my arm, this is me holding you. McSteamy says deep touch pressure is calming.
Things are going to be fine, all right? We're going to binge on every kind of junk food we can get our hands on in this hellhole, and things are going to be fine.
Alice? {private}
When am I not in the dark place? I thought you knew me. I thought you were my twisted sister.
And I— I kind of— I think maybe it might not be a threat.
Um, do we— do we have more cream cheese?
Admitting you're happy sometimes doesn't make you any less strong or badass, Tucker Hart.
...What? What? Please tell me that doesn't mean what I think it means. Because then I really will kick his ass no matter how many times you're like 'wait, Alice, you can get arrested for that'.
No, but we're going to get some. Right now. Up, up.

This is the best plan I’ve heard all week. Even if it involves a Jason.
He’s…. James is pissy because I won’t agree with him on something, something that is my business, I might add, and he thinks he should get to be the boss of it, like the patronizing, big-brother asshole that he is.
Oh, and apparently he can just throw out the threat of breaking up with me like it’s something casual, like it would be no big if he had to actually go through with it, which is of course very encouraging to the state of our relationship.
I should just be in a relationship with cream cheese. I’d be happy. Fat, but happy.
He's not that bad when he's not talking. And I'm behind two Witch Weeklys, which is devastating so obviously that needs to be remedied right away. Plus, one of them has a cheesy personality quiz. Jackpot, right?
Kind of sounds like he's being a drama queen which is pretty lame considering this job is stressful enough without grade school drama added to the mix.
Woah, he really threatened to break up with you? That is a major dick move. ...You okay? You in the dark place?
Alice? {private}
Moody, stubborn, protective, patronizing James. And, no, don’t beat him up, his face is too pretty.
I love him, but I kind of don’t like him very much today. That’s a horrible thing to say about your boyfriend, isn’t it? Oh, fuck it, I’m eating all the cream cheese.
Ew. The combo. You don't deserve that today. Blow him off today and eat cream cheese with me all night. ...Well, me and Jason but we can just kind of pretend he's not there I'll make him be quiet.
Yeah, we're kind of horrible people. Whatever. Do you have any idea why he's being so pissy?
Alice? {private}
Oh, the depths of misery our lives have come to.
James. James is going on.
Horny James, protective James, moody James, or angsty James?
Want me to beat him up? I could beat him up.
Alice? {private}
I need cheesecake in an IV. Stat.
Don't have that, but I do have half a bagel from breakfast with strawberry cream cheese in my locker. We could pretend...?
What's going on?
An Exercise In Humility II Alice and Isaiah
If there was one thing Isaiah was completely sure of in this life it was that he was so not cut out for the military life style.
Well okay, he had only come to this conclusion recently as he was told to run through the obstacle course again. To climb over the wall again. To crawl through the mud again. It was a wonder that he just hadn’t slipped into a coma out of purely being done.
Oh no though there he was still. You could ask ‘well what were you expecting’ and in fact he was pretty sure General Durand had already asked said question. Well, asked was probably a loose term. Yelled was most likely accurate. Either way let’s just say that it is hard out there for a well groomed pureblooded guy who has spent 80% of his life napping, 10% trying to convince pretty girls he was the one for them while getting high and a final 10% blundering into what he could only hope were his classes.
Now there were a whole lot of injuries Isaiah had sustained this past week alone and while he could deal with the bruises and the scratches and the dull pain that thumped in the back of his head there was one thing he couldn’t deal with. One thing that just meant things had gone too far.
Once you mess with the eyebrow game, all bets are off.
“Nurse! Nurse, please. I need a nurse,” he mumbled against the wall his face was leaning on before quirking a totally-not-there eyebrow at the blonde who walked in, “Alice, Alice, Alice,” he said trying to concentrate on her. He couldn’t bring himself to scold her for the giggling because hey, if it were the other way around he’d probably be doing the same. Only not giggling. Something more manly.
“It was horrible,” he said throwing his arms out before wincing, “Horrible. I mean come on. They take away my long lie ins, my chocolate frog binges, my manhood but this! This has gone too far. Too far I tell you! There was a wand and there was firing like literal fire and then there was this smell like…burning. And then!” he exclaimed taking a pause for dramatic effect —
“Then they were gone. Gone Alice! I’m a broken shell of a man. Look at me. Look at me! Just take me away from this cruel cruel world,” he let his head fall back against the wall, “…This isn’t the sexy nurse outfit I was imaging you in by the way,” and as an afterthought he swiftly added with a half-smile, “Don’t mention that comment to Jason.”
So maybe Isaiah Swanswallow wasn’t her most exciting case this week, but he was most definitely her most entertaining.
Alice rolled her eyes, not without a hint of affection, at his melodramatic description, nodding in faux sympathy as she rummaged through the various blue, plastic drawers lining the walls that held all sorts of medication. She really ought to unleash Ben on this place, maybe he could make it so the bandages were next to other treatments for surface wounds instead of an opened and half used bottle of skele-grow.
“I think you look kind of cute,” she offered, pausing her search and shooting him a wicked grin, “you know, like, in a martian way. Almost like you’re…” She allowed a beat of silence, in which a chorus of judgmental voices told her not to say the next words (unfortunately, a chorus she’d gotten used to ignoring), “Out of this world.”
She took a moment to appreciate the pun and snort at her own positively scathing wit, really she should be a comedian, before shooting him a warning look “Don’t mention that to Jason.” And then returning to her aggressive searching, which was only growing more and more aggressive by the second as a hair regrowth formula refused to present itself.
Ugh. Godric, she hated her job sometimes. Slamming the last drawer shut irritably, she didn’t bother summoning a comforting smile – it was Isaiah, he’d know it was fake anyways – and walked over to sit at the edge of his bed. “Well the good news is it doesn’t look like the area’s suffered severe burning,” she mumbled, leaning closer to him and gently touching the pink patches above his eyes, “but the bad news is I’m going to have to ask McSteamy to get me some hair regrowth formula from our supply closet which’ll put him in a bad mood for the rest of the afternoon. So thanks for injuring yourself,” she teased, leaning back and moving to push him playfully but retracting her hand with a wince as she caught sight of his various bruises.
Getting up off the bed she returned to the drawers and dug out a couple blue jelly looking salves. “But in the meantime,” catching hold of her ponytail, Alice shook out her hair and whispered in her sexiest sexy nurse voice, “take all your clothes off. I can get rid of the bruises. Or at least make it so it doesn’t hurt every time you move.”
I thought the war would be more exciting than school.
Dance it out. Best motto on the planet. I’ve been preaching it for years. Well, that and screw it out.
Fire plus me is the secret to getting in those pretty panties of yours? Merlin, if I had only known this a year ago… But, yeah, fire is amazing, it’s like…. creation and power and destruction all in one spark, you know?
Oh, fuck it, we’re gonna build one now. Come on, help me drag some brush over to this little dirt patch here.
Are you nervous for when it gets real? For when we come in with gaping wounds and blown-off limbs and heads bashed in? And give the elephants a peanut and tell them to settle down.
Maybe, but I don't know if setting yourself on fire is worth it.
Okay, okay, let's do it. Jesus it's dark out. I think I just stepped on a small woodland creature which probably means I'm going to hell. Do you have your wand on you? ...And some marshmallows?
Absolutely. I mean, my psychological damage would be more extensive than we all originally thought if I wasn't, right? But I'm also excited and so, so, so ready.
I thought the war would be more exciting than school.
Hmm, a pencil skirt…. Those look really good when you bend over, right? We’ll have to practice. You can tell me how my form is looking.
You’re a little too sexy for a baby bunny, unless we’re gonna go Playboy here. And you are so not vulnerable— you’re one of the strongest people I know. Now, seriously, shut up and drink and dance it out before I start feeling like I have to hug you.
Rushes are good. Rushes are the best. You accidentally kill anyone yet? And you can hold me to that uniform any time you want, cupcake, if it weren’t for that ball-and-chain of yours. Eh, foot soldiering is alright. I get to point my wand at stuff and blow shit up, so I like that part. I miiiight be turning into a bit of a pyro, but we’ll save that for many later therapy sessions.
Yeah, they're hot in the sexy librarian kind of way. Who doesn't love sexy librarians? Come on, Kat, everything looks good on you when you bend over.
This is true. And, besides, Frank's enough of a baby bunny for the both of us. Shutting up and dancing it out.That is so going to be my motto every second I'm not working. This is actually really therapeutic and spiritual if you ignore the creepy lyrics in, like, every dance song ever.
Not yet, but that's only because most of our injuries have been minor training accidents and stuff. Nobody's gotten really hurt. ...I don't know why they call them butterflies because it actually feels like elephants are trying to kill cockroaches in the pit of my stomach. Hey, there's absolutely nothing wrong with being a pyro. Fire is hands down the most sexiest thing on the face of the planet. Minus you, obviously.
An Exercise In Humility II Alice and Isaiah
The first hour of the day, Alice was kind of excited to be working with real people instead of dummies.
There were definite pros to that, the one they could all be most thankful for was that someone as sadistic as Healer Hottie wasn't in control of a real person's bleeds, fractures, and other bodily impairments.
But there were also cons, like having to comfort these whiny fuckers every other second because 'oh my arm is broken in half and I expect you to fix it while you listen to all the reasons you should care about how much my life sucks'. Her daily store of sympathy was quickly depleted in the first twenty minutes of rounds, and now if a patient let out a single 'ouch' when there wasn't a foreign object stuck in their abdomen, they were graced with what Alice considered a not-too-venomous 'deal with it'.
Apparently her bedside manner really sucked.
A sad truth she was scolded for every time her boss dropped in on her patients to "make sure they didn't need trauma therapy" after her treatment plans.
Whatever. He was a major drama queen.
But no matter the ridiculous exaggeration of the accusation, a sideways glance at Sarah Ross who had a look so optimistic it could probably cure dragon pox never failed to make something like jealousy tighten in her chest just the slightest. If there was one thing she detested, it was being bad at something.
Long story short, it was one of those days where she could really use a laugh.
So when Tucker absentmindedly handed her Isaiah Swanswallow's chart with an offhanded comment about sneaking off to the kitchens with James, and the time to actually read over and get to it finally presented itself, she started to believe maybe there really was a God.
Completely ignoring the incoming, possibly exciting trauma that was pushing its way through the emergency unit's tent flap, she made a beeline for Isaiah's patient stall. Pulling back the blue curtain hung up around his hospital bed, Alice grinned at the very grumpy looking, very purple, very eyebrow-less patient that awaited her.
"Oh man. Not even going to lie, this is probably the highlight of my day," not bothering to stifle the giggle that bubbled up inside her, "I don't... How did this even happen?"
I thought the war would be more exciting than school.
Ooo, hot teacher? Maybe I should bring my glasses for this. Really get into the part, you know?
Yeah, yeah, I know I’m amazing, babycakes, but tone down the sap or I’m not gonna let you drink. No one likes a sappy drunk.
And, yeah, I guess it’s an improvement, although there’s something to be said for the eroticism of an earthier odor… Anyway, you’re having fun playing hot nurse? Sending patients into cardiac arrest when you walk in that uniform? Please tell me it has a short skirt. And garters. And stockings. And heels. You know what, I’m just gonna buy you this outfit for Halloween next year, or maybe just to add to the dress-up closet.
You could probably borrow one of Molly's pencil skirts too. They're supposed to be for "diplomatic purposes" only, though, so be sneaky.
Shhh, vulnerable. Like a little baby bunny. No, no, no, I'm the dancey prone-to-spontaneous-nudity drunk, remember? Your favorite kind.
Some people think Dragon crap is erotic? Seriously? Why didn't anyone tell me? Yeah, sometimes. It's kind of a rush. But unfortunately there are no garters as far as uniforms go, we're wearing boxy, shapeless scrubs and sneakers. Holding you to that. There really aren't enough places you can wear a hot nurse uniform to, huh? How's foot soldiering?
I thought the war would be more exciting than school.
Four hours? Damn, that is just not enough time for something decent, especially if you’re gonna take playtime out of the mix. Uh, okay, so that leaves us with… star-gazing, making something in the kitchens, or a walk in the woods.
And of course you can touch my hair, cupcake. But then you have to let me twirl some of those blonde strands into ringlets around my finger. I don’t know what you’re talking about; your hair is gorgeous.
It’s even pretty enough to make up for the… charmingly weird? antiseptic smell you’ve got going on.
Food. Food and stars. We can grab something premade from the kitchens and head down to the pitch right now so I can attend my first astronomy lesson in the history of ever. So, really, that's playtime, too, because you get to be the hot teacher.
Soft. It's soft. Be my guest, but fair warning, it's kind of limp today. You are amazing. Like, really amazing. And don't make funny of me for being such a carebear right now, I'm very vulnerable.
Yeah. Charmingly weird. Let's go with that. At least it's a step up from smelling like dragon crap from spending so much time in the greenhouses, right?
I thought the war would be more exciting than school.
Um…. I wanted something that was going to wake me up, not put me to sleep. Unless that ‘deep tissue massage’ was code for a different kind of good touch…
Years of practice with all-nighters? Superior hair products? A general refusal to give in to something as lame as sleep?
You know, normally I'd be all for it, but today I feel like the least sexy person on the face of the planet. All right, McSteamy gave me four hours and strict orders not to come back drowsy so naps are out of the question anyways. What've you got?
Inhuman. You are inhuman. Can I touch your hair? I miss having pretty hair.
I thought the war would be more exciting than school.
Mildly disappointed to see that isn’t the case.
Also, I’m bored. Someone come play.
God, I need a deep tissue massage and something that's going to make me eventually pass out and regret my life choices less. And a bath. A long, lavender-y, cleansing bath.
How are you not as exhausted as me?
