An Exercise In Humility II Alice and Isaiah
So maybe Isaiah Swanswallow wasn’t her most exciting case this week, but he was most definitely her most entertaining.
Alice rolled her eyes, not without a hint of affection, at his melodramatic description, nodding in faux sympathy as she rummaged through the various blue, plastic drawers lining the walls that held all sorts of medication. She really ought to unleash Ben on this place, maybe he could make it so the bandages were next to other treatments for surface wounds instead of an opened and half used bottle of skele-grow.
“I think you look kind of cute,” she offered, pausing her search and shooting him a wicked grin, “you know, like, in a martian way. Almost like you’re…” She allowed a beat of silence, in which a chorus of judgmental voices told her not to say the next words (unfortunately, a chorus she’d gotten used to ignoring), “Out of this world.”
She took a moment to appreciate the pun and snort at her own positively scathing wit, really she should be a comedian, before shooting him a warning look “Don’t mention that to Jason.” And then returning to her aggressive searching, which was only growing more and more aggressive by the second as a hair regrowth formula refused to present itself.
Ugh. Godric, she hated her job sometimes. Slamming the last drawer shut irritably, she didn’t bother summoning a comforting smile – it was Isaiah, he’d know it was fake anyways – and walked over to sit at the edge of his bed. “Well the good news is it doesn’t look like the area’s suffered severe burning,” she mumbled, leaning closer to him and gently touching the pink patches above his eyes, “but the bad news is I’m going to have to ask McSteamy to get me some hair regrowth formula from our supply closet which’ll put him in a bad mood for the rest of the afternoon. So thanks for injuring yourself,” she teased, leaning back and moving to push him playfully but retracting her hand with a wince as she caught sight of his various bruises.
Getting up off the bed she returned to the drawers and dug out a couple blue jelly looking salves. “But in the meantime,” catching hold of her ponytail, Alice shook out her hair and whispered in her sexiest sexy nurse voice, “take all your clothes off. I can get rid of the bruises. Or at least make it so it doesn’t hurt every time you move.”
“In a martian way,” he repeated running his tongue over his teeth before giving her a slightly amused smile, “You always do know just what to say to put the sunshine back in my day.” His smile grew at the sound of her snort but quickly seized as she brought out one of her warning looks – the ones she used to use before a big Quidditch game. He pulled his right hand up and gave her a mock salute.
“Sir yes ma'am!” he droned much like he had being for the past few weeks (well technically he had been sir yes sir-ing but details). Actually if he was good at any aspect of being a foot solider it was the repetitive yelling aspect. He watched her rummage around becoming more and more frustrated as she went. Inwardly he prepared himself for her to lose it and throw the nearest item at him – hopefully that would be an ice pack.
“You know you should really get Ben down here. Bet he'd colour coordinate, arranged, re-arrange and make you up a labelling system for all this heal...y stuff,” he mused just as she slammed a drawer.
Watching her sit down at the edge of the bed he offered her one of his best goofy grins making sure to lift his would-be-eyebrows in the process, “You are entirely welcome Ali-cakes. That's just how I roll, you know.”
He wasn't sure what must have been worse – having your eyebrows singed off or having to be the one who fixed eyebrows being singed off. He relaxed his face muscles as she launched herself from the bed and returned to those pesky drawers. Before he could even register it a bark of laugh had escaped his mouth and despite the slight pain he felt in his chest it was good to hear that sound again. Isaiah hooked his fingers underneath the bottom of his shirt and bit back all the very unmanly noises of pain he would have made as he pulled it over his head.
“I bet you say that to all your patients. Lucky for you I'm just going to count myself with the lucky ones and can we just talk about your hair game for a second here, yeah? I'm proud of you. Despite everything I can tell you're still using that super-shining conditioner,” he smirked and if you took away the whole make-shift hospital setting it could have just been another day at Hogwarts. One of those post-practice days. Looking over to her he felt a sudden pang in his chest.
“Hey so, how are you doing? I mean, really. If that's not, you know, a dumb question.”

if you like your coffee hot let me be your coffee pot you call the shots, babe i just wanna be yours
I thought the war would be more exciting than school.
Smart ideas are overrated. But so is memory loss. What’s the point of doing something wild and crazy if all you’re left with is hazy images and bruises you can’t explain? Especially since I definitely wanna remember all these pretty compliments you’re giving me. Save ‘em up for a rainy day.
So, what do you say? Are you going to plead the same-old tired excuse everybody’s using— that all we need is a bath and a nap? Or are you up for a walk in the woods with me?
Well I guess it's only the plus method when you don't want to remember those hazy memories. Some things just really shouldn't be seen in high def. You on the other hand, now that you mention it, are something I would most definitely like to remember in the highest of definitions. Ah well there's a whole lot more where those came from but I'm only as good as my muse gives me.
What? Who needs to nap! I don't need to nap. Sleep is for the weak. Walk in the woods where we could potentially be eaten by a wile Merlin-knows-what? I'm so there. I'll even protect you if things get sketchy. Promise.

An Exercise In Humility II Alice and Isaiah
The first hour of the day, Alice was kind of excited to be working with real people instead of dummies.
There were definite pros to that, the one they could all be most thankful for was that someone as sadistic as Healer Hottie wasn’t in control of a real person’s bleeds, fractures, and other bodily impairments.
But there were also cons, like having to comfort these whiny fuckers every other second because ‘oh my arm is broken in half and I expect you to fix it while you listen to all the reasons you should care about how much my life sucks’. Her daily store of sympathy was quickly depleted in the first twenty minutes of rounds, and now if a patient let out a single ‘ouch’ when there wasn’t a foreign object stuck in their abdomen, they were graced with what Alice considered a not-too-venomous ‘deal with it’.
Apparently her bedside manner really sucked.
A sad truth she was scolded for every time her boss dropped in on her patients to “make sure they didn’t need trauma therapy” after her treatment plans.
Whatever. He was a major drama queen.
But no matter the ridiculous exaggeration of the accusation, a sideways glance at Sarah Ross who had a look so optimistic it could probably cure dragon pox never failed to make something like jealousy tighten in her chest just the slightest. If there was one thing she detested, it was being bad at something.
Long story short, it was one of those days where she could really use a laugh.
So when Tucker absentmindedly handed her Isaiah Swanswallow’s chart with an offhanded comment about sneaking off to the kitchens with James, and the time to actually read over and get to it finally presented itself, she started to believe maybe there really was a God.
Completely ignoring the incoming, possibly exciting trauma that was pushing its way through the emergency unit’s tent flap, she made a beeline for Isaiah’s patient stall. Pulling back the blue curtain hung up around his hospital bed, Alice grinned at the very grumpy looking, very purple, very eyebrow-less patient that awaited her.
"Oh man. Not even going to lie, this is probably the highlight of my day," not bothering to stifle the giggle that bubbled up inside her, "I don’t… How did this even happen?”
If there was one thing Isaiah was completely sure of in this life it was that he was so not cut out for the military life style.
Well okay, he had only come to this conclusion recently as he was told to run through the obstacle course again. To climb over the wall again. To crawl through the mud again. It was a wonder that he just hadn't slipped into a coma out of purely being done.
Oh no though there he was still. You could ask 'well what were you expecting' and in fact he was pretty sure General Durand had already asked said question. Well, asked was probably a loose term. Yelled was most likely accurate. Either way let's just say that it is hard out there for a well groomed pureblooded guy who has spent 80% of his life napping, 10% trying to convince pretty girls he was the one for them while getting high and a final 10% blundering into what he could only hope were his classes.
Now there were a whole lot of injuries Isaiah had sustained this past week alone and while he could deal with the bruises and the scratches and the dull pain that thumped in the back of his head there was one thing he couldn't deal with. One thing that just meant things had gone too far.
Once you mess with the eyebrow game, all bets are off.
“Nurse! Nurse, please. I need a nurse,” he mumbled against the wall his face was leaning on before quirking a totally-not-there eyebrow at the blonde who walked in, “Alice, Alice, Alice,” he said trying to concentrate on her. He couldn't bring himself to scold her for the giggling because hey, if it were the other way around he'd probably be doing the same. Only not giggling. Something more manly.
“It was horrible,” he said throwing his arms out before wincing, “Horrible. I mean come on. They take away my long lie ins, my chocolate frog binges, my manhood but this! This has gone too far. Too far I tell you! There was a wand and there was firing like literal fire and then there was this smell like...burning. And then!” he exclaimed taking a pause for dramatic effect —
“Then they were gone. Gone Alice! I'm a broken shell of a man. Look at me. Look at me! Just take me away from this cruel cruel world,” he let his head fall back against the wall, “...This isn't the sexy nurse outfit I was imaging you in by the way,” and as an afterthought he swiftly added with a half-smile, “Don't mention that comment to Jason.”
I thought the war would be more exciting than school.
Wow. Dorky and overly verbose all in one package? How could I resist?
Now…. how should I reward you for such flamboyant generosity?
Dorky and overly verbose are my top specialities. Glad you enjoy them but y'know, I'm pretty versatile. I come in a whole variety of packages.
Oh I don't think I'm in any position to go making decisions like that. I have it on good authority you're both the beauty and the brains. Most of my plans do tend to avoid firewhiskey from the loose floorboard and a whole bunch of hazy memories though which with all the pre-noon starts we have these days shouldn't really be such a smart idea.
I thought the war would be more exciting than school.
Mildly disappointed to see that isn’t the case.
Also, I’m bored. Someone come play.
I both nominate and volunteer Isaiah Swanswallow AKA myself for whatever whims or needs you are needing met your highness, Kat, ma'am.
I think...
Do you have one? I’ve already used the last of mine.
…And as much as I’d like one…I don’t think my body would appreciate a hug…Everything hurts.
Well only because I'm the best brother ever and not because some times I like to take care of my cuticles, okay?
Yeah, yeah I know the feeling. Air hug? The thought's there at least. How're you doing Lilah? I mean besides the whole going through Hell wrapped up in mud part.
I think I need some ice.
I’m glad I’ve had that effect on you. But hey, at least by the end of this, you’ll look like Hercules and I’ll look even more like the Goddess I already am. It would be such a shame not to know where your tongue is, Swanswallow. Just let me know if you’d like a check up.
Well, anything for the team, yeah? I’ll make sure to fluff my hair in the mornings just for you. But don’t expect me to take an ice bath with you every night either. I do have fire whiskey to share, if you’d like some. That is always an option.
I bet you have that effect on everyone. -laughs- There in lies a very good point. I doubt you get enough credit for your brains there, Bristol. No pain, no gain or whatever it is they're churning out as the inspirational quote of the day. Yes Ma'am. I can already tell you'd have made a terrific nurse.
Yeah, anything for the team. I like the firewhiskey option even more than the ice bath. You know what we could do? Take the ice from the bath and put it in the firewhiskey. Boom. Two birds, one stone.
It smells like burning hair.
There’s also that possibility that one day they’d meet a nice Erlynmeyer flask, settle down, and pop out lots of little test tubes. I’m a murderer.
Symmetrical? Really? I think the right one’s a little more arch-y. Like Benjamin’s.
Muffin. How much do you want for the muffin? My soul and half a cup of coffee is kind of all I’ve got. Feeling very extinguished firecracker-y. Which kind of blows. You doing all right there, insert-cute-nickname-here?
What? You're not a murderer. Whatever will be will be Mollycakes. Don't worry about. What you should worry about are all the chemicals you are clearly breathing in. Gotta watch out, okay? Can't have the smartest girl ever clocking out on us.
Ah well, if anyone's an expert on Benjamin and his eyebrows it's you.
Well I've actually stopped taking souls as currency as of last month so you're all out of luck there but since I like you so much I'll give it to you free of charge. Insert-cute-nickname-here is doing alright. Kinda extinguished too actually and you're right, totally blows. Guess we should have anticipated that though, huh?
I think I need some ice.
I was actually going to sell them on the black market for an extra ration of dessert, so… Yeah. Yeah, I’m in desperate need of them.
Stoop. Stop before I start regretting not having jumped off my broom. Commander Song-Stealing-My-Soul-and-Happiness looks like the type of guy that thinks eating nails for breakfast will help us build character. Yours?
Easy there Tiger, the pudding ain't all it's cracked up to be. That's just your famished...ness talking for you. Don't go doing anything rash.
Alright, alright, alright simmer yourself back down. Your hair might start falling out from all the unnecessary stress. Wow. Sounds like a peach. Bet he gets on great with my guy who just pretty much rolled me around in pain and then told me I didn't roll around right. And you know what you do when you don't do it right? You do it again. I feel like...that one odd sock that never finds its other half.
It smells like burning hair.
But still. Very wasteful.
Oh. Yeah. That’s good. Those are important. Thank you. And you still have eyebrows, too. That’s also good. Con-.. congratulations? Congratulations.
Butter. God, suddenly I really want butter. Do you have any butter on you?
Why are they there if not for you to blow up, huh? It's their destiny. Wouldn't want to take away their destiny. Come on Molls, where's your heart at?
So important. Thank you very much. I do pride myself on these symmetrical wonders.
Do I have any butter on me... Good question. -searching on him because you never know- Uh, no. Negative on the butter but it appears I can offer you a cracker and what I assume is a quarter of a muffin. You doing alright there Firecracker?
It smells like burning hair.
…I need new hair. And new beakers. I’ve blown up six beakers today. Very wasteful.
And if everything looks like it’s underwater and you keep smelling burnt toast, does that mean you have a burning concussion.
Hey look on the bright side. Both your eyebrows are still firmly attached to the place where your eyebrows are supposed to be at. If that's not a win then I don't know what is.
...Second one I don't really know how to comment on but burnt toast isn't all that bad if you put enough butter on it so... Just roll with it Captain Red.
I think...
I think I broke a nail…
Do you need the emergency nail kit!?
Some water? A hug? I feel so unprepared right now.
