I am a woman and I’m black and proud of it. I was born and raised in Portugal, but my parents are from Cape Verde 🇨🇻, both of my parents are black. I have moved to the UK since I was 17 and I learned english in school back when I was living in Portugal . These are things that I have to explain every time I meet someone or get a new job, don’t get me wrong , I’m proud of my journey and who I am and Im happy to tell my story, its the condescending and racism behind it that gets me angry. Unfortunately here in the UK its hard to distinguish if the anger towards me its because of where I’m from , my race or both, but I have experienced it all , from someone shouting at me on the bus in Spanish assuming that’s the language I speak because I didn’t hear him thinking I didn’t understand english to having “white friends” tell me Im pretty for a black girl or that I don’t even sound black.
