โWhatโs wrong? You want to come out?โ Newt crouched at the door to the tiny cage and glanced around to check no one was looking before taking out his wand, โWill you trust me to look after you?โ No matter ehat the response was to that he was already opening the cage door, offering him his hand to help him out.

The idea of apparating was... terrifying. Most things magic frightened him. But Credence was always afraid. Fear consumed him and became him.ย
At least now, he wasnโt alone with his terror.ย
It occurred to Credence a little late, that his saviour had magical abilities. He was a witch, yet he was good. Credence had never realised that was possible.ย
What he knew of magic, what heโd been told and what heโd experienced, was dark and wicked. And Credence was wicked for his abilities, and the thing that happened sometimes, that had come to him as a blessing and turned into a curse.
He couldnโt imagine this man doing anything demonic like that.
So Credence nodded, giving his permission to be apparated away.

ย ย โSomeone at work was trying to get rid of their latest litter, and I thought you might be interested. I think a pet would do you some good. If you donโt want her, thatโs fine, but a nice, non-magical creature you can look after can make a very good companion.โ
The kitten was small enough to curl up in the palms of his hands. Graves hadnโt been entirely sold on the idea until heโd walked into his office and found someone, and he had a strong suspicion as to who Tina, had left the little fuzzball on his desk, where it had been shredding through a stack of papers. Heโd warmed up to it very quickly after that.
Growing up, Credence had always wanted a pet. What boy didnโt? But, of course, Ma would never allow it. It would have been another mouth to feed, not to mention the fact that she kept him busy with chores and pamphlets from dawn till dusk. He wouldnโt have had timeย for an animal.
And Credence wouldnโt want to bring an innocent animal into her world anyway.
But now, heย stared at the little creature in mister Gravesโ hands as though heโd never seen anything so astounding in his life. And the tiniest kitten heโd ever seen in his life, with all black fur, stared back at him.ย
Her jaws stretched open in a tiny yawn. Credence gasped softly. She was so small, and so soft. Would he be a good owner to her? What if he screwed it all up like he always did? What if she could tell he was a monster?
โA-are you sure?โ He could hardly believe his luck.ย โYou really think I could look after her?โ

Credence watched the man, who seemed so gentle and kind unlike anyone else; but he didnโt know if he dared trust him.
It could be a trick. He could be imagining things.ย
But even if he wasnโt trustworthyโฆ Anything was better than being trapped there. So he reached forward, gripping the offered hand.ย
Newt smiled warmly as the boy took his hand, holding it firmly but not too tightly and leading him quietly from the cage to a more hidden area,ย โWe have to apparate away, I donโt know if you have done that before but it can feel a little uncomfortable, do you mind me doing that? It will put us somewhere safer much faster. You can just nod or shake your head if you donโt want to speak,โ He spoke in a whisper, keeping his fingers laced carefully with those of Credence, he didnโt want to do anything to scare him or break the little trust he had in him.ย โI promise after that it will be just you and me, you will be safe.โย
โWh-whatโs apparate mean?โ Credence asked- his voice quiet, his head bowed, hardly daring to look at the man whoโd let him out of the cage.
He found that he didnโt want to let go of his saviourโs hand. Cedence was so unaccustomed to kindness that it scared him - yet at the same time he needed it like he needed air. Someone whoโd hold his hand, someone whoโd talk gently to him, and not call him a freak.
The auburn-haired man before him and everything he said seemed too good to be true. He promised safety. Could he really do that? Could he save Credence from himself?
Ivy stared at the black substance along the wall with both shock and interest. She's never seen anything like it before and she wasn't going to walk away now. Stepping closer, she began to wonder. "Hello? Can you hear me?"
@multiiplehearts
Terror. Anger. Confusion. That was all that there was left of Credence, so much that it had taken over physically, replacing the pale, lanky boy with a mass of dark tendrils, that seemed to radiate utter badness.ย
But through the haze of pain, a voice seemed to reach through to him. The obscurus stopped whirling and writhing, as the boy within tried to listen to the girl brave enough to speak to him.ย
fifthcorvusโ:
Credence scrambled back from her, his back slamming against the wall.
โYouโreโฆ Youโre a witch?โ
His first instinct had been panic, because it had been drilled into his head since early childhood. Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.
But, he wasnโt afraid of her. Not really. She was nice to him. Who else did he know that was, really?
โIs that how you got me back fromโฆ back to normal?โ
She was taken back by his sudden shift away, blinking a few times slowly as she listened and watched. Ivy didnโt mean to scare him, just help or even be his friend. Ivy always had a connection to the supernatural or alien over normal life and she knew that wasnโt because of what she was or could do.ย
โWell, I have been able to calm a few creatures with my singing, but I guess thatโs a power of a Chime Hour. So, no. Not really a witch because I donโt have a wand nor do I have to say the names to spells to do things. I can see things others canโt and communicate with them as well as nature. See? Nothing to be scared of.โ
โBut thatโs unnatural.โ Credence said quietly.
He was confused. Ivy wasnโt... how Ma said a witch would be. She was kind. She didnโt seem like somebody of the Devil.
Not like him.
@fifthcorvus
He didnโt let the surprise show on his face on seeing the boy step out of the shadows, but it was still there. He had heard rumors, but he had never seen any proof until now that he survived.ย โCredence,โ he said.ย โI must say, this is not something that I ever expected.โ
Credence leant ever so slightly away from the older wizard though otherwise didn't move, dark eyes wide with uncertainty. This was someone he'd been warned about. They said he was wicked, and that he'd only been using Credence.ย
But... it was mister Graves, wasn't it? He just had a disguise when Credence knew him.ย And Mister Graves had been his friend... hadn't he?
ย โIโm not sโposed to talk to you, sir.โ

Credence shook his head with complete horror. โNever!โ the idea that he might choose to do something like that, after all the warnings, was scandalising to the extreme. โItโs a sin. Andโฆ my Ma would be furious. I cause enough trouble without being a sinner too.โ
โOh? So your mother sees magic as evil then?โ Ivy thought those mindsets were over by now, but that quickly made her realise why he was so nervous.ย
โGuess that makes me a sinner to.โ Maybe telling him she can do magic too will somehow help.ย โOnly my parents donโt know anything.โ

Credence watched, wary as he always was when someone approached, as Graves walked towards him. Only when heโd managed to convince himself somewhat that the situation was under control, and that he wouldnโt be hurt, did he speak. Nobody had explained much about the real Percival Gravesโ part in all this. Only that his identity had been stolen. That the real Graves would never do such awful things, because he was a good man. But Credence could guess, that whatever had happened was quite nasty. They were both just afraid really, werenโt they?
โIt- itโs called Lumos, sir. It creates light.โ
As soon as heโd spoken he inwardly cringed; Graves was an accomplished wizard, why had he bothered explaining the most simple of spells, the first few pages of Chadwickโs Charms volume one? Of course, for Credence it had been anything but simple. He didnโt fear other peopleโs magic; he watched Tina and Queenie lay the table for dinner every night with awe, and the moving pictures in the newspapers were some of the most marvellous things heโd ever seen. Yet most of the time he could barely bring himself to touch a wand or any other magical object, in fear of the darkness that so often took him over. โIโve never cast a spell before. And it didnโt - I didnโt get it wrong.โย He didnโt hurt anyone. He didnโt destroy anything.
Graves stopped just short of the boy, a gentle hand patting his arm encouragingly. They were a strange pair,ย the two men who had suffered most at the hands of the dark wizard. Graves was still unsure whether or not the boy really did have any control over hisโฆ more destructive side. Credence was still terrified that anyone who got near him was going to beat him within an inch of his life. But somehow things were calm between them.
He knew exactlyย what Lumos did. It was not unusual for it to be the first spell a young wizard was taught, but Graves didnโt scoff or roll his eyes at Credenceโs explanation. It was good he was learning, it was good he knew what he was learning. A person with magical inclinations could wave a wand and say words and make something happen, but that didnโt necessarily mean they knew what they were doing.
ย ย โAh, yes, I know it well. More useful than you think too. Itโs a rare day goes by that I donโt use it.โ
Mostly because he would wake up in the middle of the night, terrified that someone was lurking in the dark, and would light up his whole apartment before trying to get another hour or two of sleep before he had to repeat the process.
ย ย โCongratulations Credence, itโs a well-earned success. Youโll be casting left, right and centre in no time. The first spellโs always the hardest.โ
One of the biggest lies heโd ever told, but Credence definitely needed his confidence lifted, and telling him heโd taken three times as long to master a spell that took most ten year olds ten minutes to learn would not be well received.
Credence stared down at the hand upon his shoulder as though heโd never seen such a thing. It had been a while since heโd escaped his old life, and been taken in by his newfound friends - but kind touch was still not something he was used to.
His heart was still racing, but he was just being stupid - thatโs what Credence told himself. Mister Graves had never hurt him. And if he was going to now it would have happened already, wouldnโt it? He was safe here.
As usual, such thoughts were mostly ineffective on his pretty permanent state of fear.
The timid boy smiled again at being congratulated on his achievement. Encouragement wasnโt something he was yet used to either. Being told heโd done something well was like a precious treasure, if only he could carry that moment with him always.
โOh, I donโt know if I could do that,โ Credence admitted. The idea ofย โcasting spells left, right and centreโ was as alluring as it was alarming. He wanted control. But could he trust himself to be responsible with his magic, if it were more refined?ย โIโm not sure magic likes me very much.โ
