iâve been listening to the phm score every day since i saw the film (naturally), and something that makes me So emotional each time (that i havenât seen anyone else mention) is the moment in the 2nd last piece, âbelieve in the hail maryâ, where the drums & the electric guitar come in? because weâve been listening to majority ~đspace musicđ~ for the past 2 and a bit hours, with interstitial earth songs, but the moment we come back to earth and see how humanity & space (ie. grace & rocky) work together to solve the problem, the music blends the two together? daniel pemberton the man that you are
thinking about the karaoke scene and,, how on earth did grace explain what 'potato' and 'tomato' meant to rocky so that he could sing along. like you can't even do a puppet show to explain vegetables when the person learning what they are has never heard of a plant lmao
do you think any of grace's past students got into mit because of recommendations he wrote them. do you think he inspired any of them to take physics at university. do you think abby was so motivated by the way he challenged her that she interned at nasa. do you think trang remembered his science teacher when he became a climatologist. do you think rekha designed global strategies for the world health organisation. do you think olivia kept a telescope at her window for the rest of her life, always trained on tau ceti. do you think about the 6th grade science classes at grover cleveland middle and the teacher who changed their world.
ryland grace after class is done for the day and a young eridian asks if he has a moment. ryland grace noticing this normally exuberant little alien speaks in a lower octave than normal and is nervously fidgeting with three of their arms. ryland grace listening when the young eridian says they know all eridians mate for life, but is it okay if they don't think they want to? that they don't really have the interest? that they know everyone else has a mate, or wants a mate, but maybe that's just not for them? ryland grace telling his student of course that's okay, sometimes people just feel that way, heck, he's felt that way his whole life! ryland grace deciding after the young eridian leaves to boot up an old Hail Mary laptop and do some more research to support his student. ryland grace reading through thousands of old websites and forum posts and blogs and it finally clicking after years. ryland grace learning he wasn't the only one all those times he felt different, or strange, or isolated from everyone around him. ryland grace realising despite being the only human on erid, he is not alone in this feeling.
