I haven’t seen a single episode yet but I want to know what actual autistics think of the new TV show the good doctor.
Is it good representation? Problematic AF? Some good some bad? I haven’t seen anyone talk about it so I’m curious.
So my disability is physical so correct me if I'm wrong
But I was happy to see how they acknowledged Billy (the blue power ranger) was on on spectrum but was still treated as a person and part of the team. I also like that his disability wasn't "cured" when he got his powers. I could definitely be wrong though and there could totally be something ableist that I missed while watching the movie but so far I'm giving it a thumbs up (with my only wish being that the actor was actually autistic in real life)
And and BTW he still can't find a job (link below) Disabled people have such a hard time finding a job even if their disability has nothing to do with getting the job done. Picture Description: Graduate applied for 400 jobs withtout response - until he removed DISABILITY from his CV A university graduate says that he applied for a staggering 400 jobs without receiving a response - until he removed disability from his CV. http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/745614/Graduate-rejected-by-400-jobs-until-removed-disability-from-CV
Holiday season is the worst time for disabled people to find parking please don't use an accessible spot unless you need it. Picture Description: Do you meet these requirements to park in a handicapped space? If not, please SAVE THE SPACE for someone who DOES. B)1. The person must be currently certified as being legally blind or as having any of the following disabilities that render him or her unable to walk 200 feet without stopping to rest: A. Inability to walk without the use of or assistance from a brace, cane, crutch, prosthetic device, or another assistive device, or without the assistance of another person. If the assistive device significantly restores the persons ability to walk to the extent that the person can walk without severe limitation, the person is not eligible for the exemption parking permit. B. The need to permanently use a wheelchair. C. Restriction by lung disease to the extent that the person's forced (respiratory) expiratory volume for 1 second, when measured by spirometry, is less than 1 liter, on the person's arterial oxygen is less than 60 mm/hg on room air at rest. D. Use of portable oxygen E. Restriction of cardiac condition to the extent that the person's functional limitations are classified in severity as class III or class IV according to standards that are set by the American heart association. F. severe limitation in the person's ability to walk due to arthritic, neurological, or orthopedic condition. NOTE: requirements vary by state: this is Florida statutes that can be applied to most communities. Stop handicapped parking abuse People who DO meet the above requirements, depend on these limited parking spaces to fully access the community. If none are available, they are unable to park anywhere at all and cannot get out of vehicles. Please be considerate and do not use unless you truly need it. Thank you from PUSHliving.com
The people behind A Cure For Wellness: Okay so get this completely 100% original story that I thought of on my own by myself. So you’ve got this hospital right? And everything seems great. But then this guy, this everyday guy, gets in the hospital and finds out…it’s not. And instead of being cured, this guy is forcibly medicated and gaslighted until he can’t distinguish reality from fantasy. And so instead of curing the patients, this hospital just makes them mentally ill so that they can’t ever leave. I mean imagine that! Imagine a hospital doing this to a patient! Pretty spoopy.
The disabled community:
100% on point
Disabled people don’t have to be skinny in order to be supported and accepted. Disabled people are of all different body shapes, types, and none are exempt from support and acceptance.
Things to leave behind in 2016
Praising abled people for treated disabled people like human beings. Including but not limited to: -asking us to prom -giving us a compliment -dating us Praising abled people for being kind to disabled people begins a very dangerous path to abuse. And no I'm not calling the person who asked the disabled guy to prom abusive. No I'm not calling the teacher who compliments his disabled students daily abusive. I'm talking about how the actual abusers see it as validation because we are "such a burden" It is possible to be happy for us without praising someone for being nice to us. Just saying
Get it Google! (Link below!) It's a small change - but it's an import one. http://www.businessinsider.com/google-maps-is-now-wheelchair-friendly-accessible-20-percent-time-employee-project-2016-12
My conversations with children
Okay as a fifth year education major in a wheelchair who is constantly around very curious kids and very paranoid parents, this is single-handedly the greatest video I have ever seen!
😂😂😂 this is the best thing ever
@/the disabled community! Show everyone how you love your life with the hashtag #ThisIsHowI it can be how you dance, how you type, how you read, how you drive, how you do makeup, how you clean, etc. literally anything. Together we can show the world that even though we are disabled we can still slay at life! (Link to article below!) Every. Fucking. Day.
Abled People: Hey, I want to start combating ableism and help my fellow differently-abled people!
Disabled Community: Finally!
Disabled Community: Where do you want to start?
Disabled Community: We have thousands of disabled children who are being killed by their parents because they're a burden.
Disabled Community: Millions of disabled people are currently experiencing medical, physical, sexual, and emotional abuse by their caregivers.
Disabled Community: We have a federal law in America which makes it legal for businesses to pay the disabled pennies.
Disabled Community: Half of all victims of police brutality are, of course, disabled.
Disabled Community: And naturally there's a lot of problems with intersectionality and the available medical treatment for people who are disabled and/or black and/or LGBT and/or female and/or fat and/or young and/or old and/or poor and/or
Disabled Community: But that's nothing compared to the severe ableism that comes with a capitalistic approach to insurance where if you can't afford it you're probably going to die.
Disabled Community: We also have the sheer lack of accessibility for people with mobility impairments, visual impairments, and hearing impairments.
Disabled Community: But of course it's easy to see those; what's not easy is to see the lack of accessibility and knowledge on invisible disabilities, mental illnesses, learning disabilities, and socioemotional disorders.
Disabled Community: Luckily you're getting involved at the right point in history. I mean before now, people threw us into asylums, shoved needles into our eyes, electrocuted us, passed a Supreme Court law to sterilize us, and there was that time Hitler killed half a million of us and now that I think about it, nobody has ever really been held accountable for anything have they? I mean the Supreme Court case hasn't even been overturned which means that steralizations are legal and
Abled Person: I've made up my mind.
Abled Person: I know what I'm going to advocate for.
Abled Person: Clearly the most important topic when it comes to advocating for the differently-handi-capable-community is
Abled Person: Getting rid of the 'R' word.
It's been 25 years since the ADA started and public transit places still aren't accessible. You know what the hardest thing about my paralysis is? walking? No I really don’t care if I ever walk again. The hardest thing about being paralyzed (for me anyways) is nights like tonight. It is almost 1 AM and I just know that I am not going to get any sleep tonight. my nerve pain is annoying the fuck out of me. Every time I get comfortable and feel like I might be able to drift off to sleep my nerve pain creeps up on me. and it’s not even that painful. Don’t get me wrong sometimes my nerve pain is so bad that all I want to do is chop my legs off. but tonight. It’s different. instead of feeling like a stabbing pain it feels like a rock is being thrown at different areas of my legs. or like I’m sitting on the corner of a Lego. It’s the kind of pain where I can’t relax. my body is so tense because the moment I stop clenching every muscle that my body can clench, it attacks me again. Sometimes having sex with my husband helps, sometimes it’s just what I need to distract my body enough to actually fall asleep at the end. Other nights (like tonight) Sex actually makes it worse and we have to stop half way through because my body keeps yelling at me. He never get’s mad and he is 100% understanding (literally he is the best husband in the universe like better than Ben Wyatt) but I just feel so awful because I want to continue, I want to enjoy our intimacy but sometimes my body decides to just not let it happen. ughhhhh it’s going to be a long night and I haven’t even announced this page yet so literally no one will read this tonight but it feels so damn good to get it all off my chest.
if you are reading this hello!
Hi!
So I made a tumblr account for Fighting.Ableism (those who don't know scope out @fighting.ableism on Instagram!) and I'll share whatever I post on my Instagram on here. And talk a bit about my personal life. Maybe even talk a little more about ableism in depth since tumblr gives me more options. But I have to warn you other than reading what other people post I have no idea what I am doing on here so sorry in advance if my account is a mess.
