First aeroplane to land at Levuka, Fiji ca 1930 .
Much excitement was caused on the island of Ovalau, Fiji, on the occasion of a recent visit from Suva of the first aeroplane to make a landing on this small island. The machine, a Hermes Spartan, was piloted by Captain Fenton, with Sir Maynard Hedstrom as a passenger. In effecting a landing on the Tokou Beach the pilot was unable to get a clear run owing to the presence of a clump of trees and a large crowd of spectators on the foreshore, and, despite skilful handling, the machine nosedived heavily into the sand, damaging the wings, under-carriage and propeller. Fortunately neither of the occupants was injured. This picture shows the machine as it appeared immediately after the accident.
