“Done, done and done!” Whoo! Who else feels like a winner tonight?! Grinning, Lindsey bounded after her aunt Everly. “Thank you so much though - I mean it. You must be busy too, so—I really appreciate this. You letting Stitch stay here.”

  “No problem, dear. Anything for you.” Everly smiles and kisses the top of her niece’s forehead. After washing the dog, Everly grabs a towel and starts drying him off. It really is a cute dog.   “Alright,” she smiles. “He’s all clean. You guys go ahead and play. I’ll make some dinner soon. You’re welcome to stay, if you call your parents and ask.”

“Oh– I got it from fighting with s-someone,” Everly replied nervously. “I’m fine, though!”

  The second of silence that followed was broken by his (slightly confused) laughter.

  “Jeez, Ev. You had me worried, you know.” It hadn’t hit yet. Not one bit. And now he was probably (though ignorantly) about to make things worse. Starting with a friendly nudge. “I like you too. We are friends, after all!”

  Unless … Yep, there it is. It’s hitting him. But there was no way she meant it like that, right?

“—or did you mean like … ?”

 Oh gods, Emmett, why...

 How could she tell him now? So embarrassing! Maybe she could just fake it and say, ‘Hah! No, I don’t mean that way! It’d be too weird!’ But Emmett knew her. The lie would be written all over her face.

 Time to cannonball again.

  “I mean I like like you, Emmett...” Ugh, why must this happen? She knew from his reaction that he’ll reject her. Hopefully he’ll let her down easy.

  “Oh! Yeah, sure! What’s up? I’m uh … not in trouble or anything, am I?”

 “Hah, of course not!” She smiles. But I might be, she mumbles to herself.

 This is it. No turning back now. What will he say when she asks him? Will he laugh at her, call her weird? Or worse, reject her harshly.

 She needs to find out. So, it’s time to cannonball it.

 “Yeah, I like you.”

  “What do you mean?”

  “I have to tell you something.”

“Good. I think Mum would freak if I were to take this little guy home.” Little guy? “Destina’s allergic to dogs, you see. It’s really annoying because I’ve always wanted one. You think you could take him? Hmmmm—-” There’s a brief pause before Lindsey grinned. “—-can we name him Stitch or something? That sounds cool, doesn’t it?”

  “I know how you feel, little one,” Everly nods and leads the dog to the bathroom. She stops in her tracks and looks at Lindsey, “I mean, it’ll be expensive. You’ll have to help me care for him.” 

  She smiles at the cute name, “Yes, that sounds lovely.”

  “You don’t have to deny.” Her smile grew into a grin. ”You are very most welcome.”

  She looked at the costume that her friend had chosen. “Yeah… I could do runes all over my arms, wear eyeliner and have at least a laser and a whip. It could work.”

  “Well, you’re the same way,” Everly smiles. “A great friend.”

 She nods and smiles slightly. “Yeah, it’s gonna look epic. Though now, I feel like my costume is too. . . been there done that. Maybe I should do something else?”

“That it is,” Ariadne agreed, smiling at the joy on the other’s features. “You needn’t worry. It shall not break its frail digits in your most careful hands, Everly.”

Was this how her mother had felt, when Pasiphaë countless times had shown her daughter the crown that befall the queen of Crete? Luckily, or sadly, Ariadne had had no daughters whose crown she had stolen in freeing herself from the royal house of Crete. “Try it on, shan’t you?”

  Everly smiled softly at the goddess. She felt safe around her, just as she used to when her mother was still alive.

  She nodded slightly and set the crown atop her head. She grinned widely as she caught a glimpse of herself in a nearby mirror. Walking over to it, her smile grew even wider.

   “I look like a princess.”

“I believe people are born as blank slates. Things happen that determine how they are shaped.”

  “I’m afraid of turning wicked. That something will come along and. . .” Everly’s voice trailed off. It was her biggest fear, turning wicked. If that happened, if she turned out like that, she’d never forgive herself.

It was hard for her to talk about.

 But she trusted this girl. Taking a deep breath, she finished her sentence, “. . . Push me off the edge.”
