sometimes it scares me. that i remember forgetting to not change. to not given in to what the corporate world wants me to become; what my parents and relatives expect of me, but instead, be one of the strong foundations of a future that is kinder, forgiving, and more tolerant to every unique individual.

it scares me that i hear my own forced laughter after my boss’ sexist jokes. that i stay quiet when i overhear my older coworkers call millennials lazy and entitled. that i have to hop in a cab driven by a traditional old man who criticizes the new night dj because he is gay.

it scares me that i am not rude enough to answer back. that i am not brave enough to form the words i am thinking. that i myself am being tolerant to a culture i hate living in everyday.

There is a scene where Jake Gyllenhaal’s character, Lou, goes to a pawn shop to sell a stolen bike. When we arrived to shoot, the blocking didn’t jell. It was cinematically static. The issue was inherent to the scene – it’s just two guys bartering separated by a counter. We tried Lou holding the bike up to show how light it was. Putting the bike on the counter to point out details. Nothing worked. As the clock ticked down and we were about to lose the location, Jake began riding around the shop as he spoke. It was so incongruous, and he did it so well, going around and around, that we stopped talking. Inspiration had struck, and we played the entire scene with Lou riding as he bartered with the owner. –Dan Gilroy
