“Pretty Sweet”
I’m really into drone photography and think it’s the most interesting new tool for film making out there right now. This video is a bit of an old one but pretty dam good! https://vimeo.com/61509852 The amount of preparation to get the timings right for this must’ve been immense, it’s pretty flawless expect for the one guy who stares at the camera for ages before moving! What I really like about…

Chernobyl Boy And LA Dreamers
Chernobyl Boy And LA Dreamers
LA Dreamers is a short film directed by Dani Fortuny, featuring 5 Japanese girls trying to make their dreams reality in the USA. The city of Los Angeles is as much a character in the film as the 5 dancers, it’s filled with shots of back streets, run down strip malls and aerial shots of shining sky scrapers at night. the way it’s shot reminds me of Drive and to a lesser extent Heat. This is much…

Monster Trucks And Yoga Hosers
Monster Trucks And Yoga Hosers
Looking through trailers today I came across a couple of interesting titles that got me wondering have we run out of ideas or hit a new level of creativity? Watching the trailer for Monster Trucks (2017) I’m definitely in the run out of ideas camp. If like me you were thinking it would be about a maverick monster truck driver (even this is a bad idea for a film) taking on all comers think again.…

How To Lose Weight In 4 Easy Steps
How To Lose Weight In 4 Easy Steps
Before reading this post, scroll down watch the film and get back to me. OK, so that was an enjoyable 7 minutes right? I’d have to admit, I clicked play to watch the film thinking there’d be some weight loss tips (pounds could do with being lost) but hopefully like me, you had a pleasant surprise when you started watching! I’m going to assume that most of us have suffered heartbreak at one time…

Assassin's Creed: First Thoughts
Assassin’s Creed: First Thoughts
I’ve played all the Assassin’s creed games, so was excited when I heard they were going to make a movie. The story lines are usually really interesting, weaving fictional characters into historical time periods with important figures from each era. In the last game Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, I got to have a chin wag with Winston Churchill and go on paranormal investigations with Charles Dickens!…

Is The Walking Dead, Dead?
Is The Walking Dead, Dead?
I’ve watched the walking Dead from the beginning, through all the high and lows, the characters loved and lost. After watching the season six finale, the feeling that it’s got nowhere left to go, just won’t leave me. Speaking to my friends, they disagree completely. They keep telling me how great a character Negan is in the comics and how many cool and incredible characters could be added for the…

Netflix Originals: Daredevil Season Two
Netflix Originals: Daredevil Season Two
I’m not a massive fan of the Marvel cinematic universe, I know this will sound like heresy to some, but to me they’ve become stale overhyped juggernauts, stuck in a creative rut. I find the tone too light at times, there’s no real sense of threat as you know all your favourite heroes will come good in the end. Granted, this looks like it might all change with Captain America: Civil War, which is…

Review: Sicario
I’ve been waiting for Sicario to come out for a while, I was gutted when I missed the opportunity to see it at the cinema. I watched one of the Director’s (Denis Villeneuve) previous films, Prisoners, and was impressed with the 70’s style slow burn thriller that he’d produced and was really looking forward to seeing his latest effort. After a raid on a house owned by the drug cartel ends with…

I visited Leavesden studios made famous by the Harry Potter films to go on the studio tour. I’m not a massive Harry Potter fan but I have to say it’s definitely worth a visit. You don’t have to be a fan of the series to appreciate the time and skill that went into making it. The sets and props are simply stunning, having the chance to walk down Diagon Alley and through the Great Hall sets used in the film is an unbelievable experience.
The sets are on the same sound stages that were used during filming, it adds to the weight of the place knowing that the actors stood where you are now, your imagination runs wild! Hagrid and Harry walking down Diagon Alley thronged with so many weird and wonderful witches and wizards, the splendour of the Great Hall, all the magical moments from the films that happened in the very room you’re standing in!
The tour is definitely a must for film buffs, the sets are lit immaculately, giving you the opportunity to take photos with lighting setups you can only dream of, if I could have got away with it I would have starting filming some scenes of my own there and then!
So much is on show, there’s even blueprints and models of the set and character designs, not to mention a myriad of treats that will inspire and amaze. There’s no way possible to give everything your full attention and take it all in with only one visit. I will definitely be going again to see what I might have missed and any new treats they may have in store for me.
If you would like to check out any of the other photos I took on the tour check out my Pinterest board.

Zion National Park Time Lapse
http:/https://vimeo.com/148514373 I was browsing through Vimeo and came across this really cool time lapse by Issimo. it’s of Zion National Park and was made for the National Park’s service centennial year. The camera is fitted with a tilt shift lens for some shots, really focusing your attention on small elements in-between the vast cliffs and canyons. The people and vehicles look like…

The Walk (2015)
The Walk follows the story of Philippe Petit who, as a boy, sneaks into the circus and is transfixed by the high wire performers. The skill, the daring do, the showmanship. He has to learn how they achieve this amazing feat. This chance glimpse of another world leads him on a trajectory from a rope around two trees, through performing in the streets of Paris, to walking between the World Trade…

Goodfellas/ Great train robbery.
Goodfellas 3 minute steadi-cam shot.
Goodfellas opening scene
Goodfellas
I re-watched Goodfellas Martin Scorsese (1990) recently for a couple of reasons, Henry Hill the real life gangster who the film is based on died in June and I’ve had it sat on a shelf on Blu-ray for months without watching it, the DVD version drove me mad as you had to turn the disc over half way through the film, well that was my excuse for buying it on Blu-ray anyway.
I have all so found some video clips from YouTube showing some of the scenes I will talk about and I will post them after I have finished writing this piece as I realise not everyone who reads this may have seen the film before.
The film audaciously starts with a scene that’s really from the middle of the film Henry (Ray Liotta) Jimmy (Robert De Niro) and Tommie (Joe Pesci) are driving in a car, banging can be heard from the boot they pull over, as they stand behind the car all three of them are bathed in red light from the tail lights it says so much about the three of them before much has really happened in the film yet they are already doomed to their fate due to their actions as becomes more apparent as the film goes on.
I can’t really talk about Goodfellas without mentioning the three minute steadi-cam shot which is just sheer brilliance and has been spoken about many times before, it pulls it right in to Henry’s world just as it does Karen (Lorraine Bracco) his life seems so exciting and glamorous to her as well as to us as we are quite literally sucked into his world, being led in through the back entrance and through the bowels of the club leaving the long queue at the door behind. This emphasises the different world we are being allowed to enter and the importance and self-worth it gives to Henry that he is letting us into it. Equally as impressive to me is the sequence where Henry is high on coke delivering the guns to Jimmy and picking up the coke all the time his paranoia is in high gear as he thinks a helicopter is following him around. The pace that the editing and quick camera moves gives this scene is fantastic giving us a real sense of Henry’s paranoia, drug use, and how totally out of control he is by this point.
Another of my favourite moments is right at the end of the film with an homage to the silent era of film as Tommie shoots his gun straight into the camera mimicking the most famous shot from the great train robbery Edwin s Porter (1903).
Even though I have only spoken about technical elements of the film the cast are outstanding throughout the film, especially Joe Pesci as Tommie you are never quite sure what he will do next, there is always an unsettling air of menace any time he is on screen.
