Fuck off. Seriously, fuck all the way off and then some.

We live in a society that causes people so much trauma that it's close to impossible to cope without using drugs, then treats them like moral failures if they use drugs.

Homelessness is traumatizing. If using drugs helps them cope with the needless trauma inflicted on them, then they deserve to be able to use drugs with zero judgment.

Instead, direct your judgment at rich people who get richer by underpaying their employees. Direct your judgment at landlords who own multiple homes for profit while contributing to the increased cost of living. The people enforcing and benefiting from the system are the moral failures. The victims of the system are not the moral failures.

So I actually work with people experiencing homelessness.

Yes some of them do drugs. Yes some of them became homeless because of addiction. But many of them became addicted in order to deal with the pains of being homeless.

Some of them haven’t touched drugs at all. Some are homeless because they let a friend stay with them in an act of kindness, then had to leave because their guest created an unsafe environment.

Some because of an injury preventing them from working. Do you know how much money you get from the government for things like that? Not enough to live on.

Some of them because they were being abused and all the DV shelters were full.

I met someone the other day, sober for 30 years, only became homeless because he filed the wrong benefits form when he got laid off.

It can happen to anybody, and we as a society need to stop assuming we’re better than them, because all it takes is one accident, one wrong financial situation, one shitty partner, to end up there ourselves.

Also, being addicted to drugs isn’t an excuse to treat people like dirt. One mistake doesn’t make you “deserve homelessness”. And if you think it’s “their choices, their problem” I urge you to try and learn some empathy, it’s a skill that will take you far in life
