Liz&Max | Let me be clear…
At the sound of her voice, Stephen’s head tilted as he he took Marisol in. Of course, they’d meet again. Fate wasn’t finished laughing at him. Frowning, he picked up the highball glass filled with chilled miller and brought it to his lips as he pondered his next move. He could speak or he could ignore her. After all, he lost one of the biggest cases of his career thanks to her antics. “Funny seeing you here. It’s like you’re stalking me.” Stephen decided to speak because him losing the case wasn’t entirely her fault. Liv was the one who took him off. Liv was the one fucking with his livelihood. She was just a mourning widow trying to get vengeance for her husband’s death. “Please don’t let me stop you from ogling my good lucks,” he glanced between the two empty stools on either side of him. “That stools empty and so is this one. I’m sexy from both angles, I promise.”
The billowing haze settled around them with a smoky thickness. She could feel the blaring kick of the bass line rattling against her ribcage and blurring her slow moving thoughts. This was a good sign. Marisol welcomed the chaotic environment. It was one of the few reliefs to eternal blaze that ignited her skin. For just one night, her heels didn’t buzz with the fleeing flight that forever fueled her agony. "That’s big talk for a medium sized man,” she fired back. Playing nice wasn’t her strong suit but she was trying. He wasn’t the enemy. Marisol s l o w l y began to see the man behind the suit. She had to reconcile her barbed fury with logic; that didn’t mean it didn’t hurt to be the bigger person. “If I were out right stalking you I’d be hanging out in the nose bleeds somewhere in the back but this is neutral ground. Maggie’s is neutral ground.” Marisol couldn’t fight the grin that tipped up on her lips. When he wasn’t being an absolute jackass, she could see the appeal that drew her roommate in like a moth. “You had me and then you lost me..so sorry.” Marisol slipped into the stool that sat directly to the left of him. She would happily choose the shadowy of the two. The bruises had faded from that vibrant purple to a ghastly yellow. “How many have you had? Your tight ass scowl seems to have loosened and I’d like to, at least, know where I should start.”
“It’s not too late.”
Tonight she didn’t want to be the broken girl. She wanted to be someone else. Not Marisol the vengeful widow but Mari the girl who used to believe in love and faith.“You know for a town this big you would think that we wouldn’t run into each other as frequently.” Marisol settled down beside him. The white flag had been waved for now.

Kenzie: Did you get everything worked out with the fancy lawyer?
Kenzie: Sometimes I am just checking on you, you know? I like to think we're friends.
Mari: Yes and no. I got my questions than answers now.
Mari: We are but it's not like we braid each other's hair and we're also roommates. I know how it is. Thanks for checking in tho.

Kenzie: Hey girly, haven't seen you in a while. How are you? Just checking in.
Mari: Yeah I've been licking my wounds and wallowing with my mamá in Queens.
Mari: Rent is in my side drawer. Take it.
What?
You smell like rain.

Stephen’s disgusted by the statements flying out of her mouth. He knows the second after she mentions the man who attacked her was Guy. Guy, the firm’s personal P.I. His nostrils flare and he clutches his fists. What the fuck? The only person who could’ve went around his back and done this was Olivia. For a moment his eyes turn cold. Olivia fucking did this, even after he told her he would take care of Marisol and the problem she posed. Grinding his teeth, he focuses back on the woman in front of him. “I’m sorry but I did not do this.” Even that won’t undo the trauma she’s endured. There’s nothing he can say that will unbreak her, nothing he can do to comfort her. For fuck’s sake, she lost her husband to a simple hospital procedure gone wrong. This is where moral verses obligation bleed together for him. Lawyers don’t represent people they find innocent all the time, sometimes it’s about position, status, a job promotion but was all of that worth it when people like Marisol were suffering in agony because of the lost of their loved ones? Suddenly disgust rages its ugly head in his stomach. You can’t let someone you don’t know stop you from getting that promotion, you have a goal, Torres, the voice in his head chides. You have a duty and a job to do. You have a plan. Stuffing his hands into his jean pockets he ponders on his next words.
“I understand your pain, Marisol, more than you know but I have an obligation to my client,” As the words pour out of his mouth, he knows this is probably one of the hardest things he’s ever had to do. Stephen chances it and takes a step towards her again. Her back is to him as she wipes her tears and the urge to comfort her, to wipe those tears overwhelm his being. Never get involved, Stephen. Flirting is one thing but feelings, no. Feelings become liabilities but he reaches a hand out and touches her shoulder briefly anyway. The moment is surreal. “I’m sorry that this is happening, I truly am.” His voice is a low timber. “I can get you and the other families large settlements, I can help in that way but I can not go against my client and I know this is hard, trust me, I know but you strike me as a woman who gets the job done no matter the circumstances,” You strike me as someone very much like myself, he adds silently. “So please understand that I can not do what you ask of me. I can’t expose a man who I am contractually obligated to defend to the best of my ability. Please understand where I’m coming from. Please.” he pleads.
I’m sorry.
That phrase had become the overused statement of the fucking century. Marisol didn’t have time for someone else’s bullshit pity. It wasn’t like they ever meant it. Faux comforts or empathy to smother the discomfort of grief. It wasn’t some beautiful cycle but an ugly display of a human’s truth. All of the raw, jagged, and most hated emotions lined every inch of her skin and forced its barbs out like thorns. Marisol used to believe that the world was a good and bright and imperfectly perfect. God had a plan for all of his followers. Hell her mother endured hell and manipulation to be gifted her “proudest” joy; her daughter. Through all of that pain, she saw the light and followed it. If only Marisol could have found her way out of the darkness before it swallowed up her hope. The rough pads of her fingers only further irritated the abrasion on her cheek. She didn’t want to think about the stranger who would be looking at her in the mirror for the next couple of weeks. Nor, did she want to believe that she had some subconscious belief in Stephan’s humanity.
“Manny’s life was priceless...” she choked out with sputtering inhale. Marisol begged her heart to ease up on the wild thumping that ensued at the feeling of his hand on her shoulder. No one was brave enough to confront the woman who stood within the eye of the storm. She didn’t know if were the side effects of a good whoppin’ or her will breaking but she allowed herself to cry before the enemy. A miscalculated step in her defense. Not that she had much of one anymore. Stephen wasn’t the man who deserved her fury. His client was and he’d get his in due time.
Marisol turned back to capture his gaze beneath the pallid glow of the moon. “I understand but I can’t stop now. It’s all I have left.”
