The folklore accounts detail some of superstitions and festivities which once surrounded Halloween in Ireland.

These Halloween tales form part of the Schools’ Folklore Collection, a large and important corpus of material, whose compilation occurred between 1937 and 1939. This far-sighted scheme, run by the Irish Folklore Commission, saw over 100,000 schoolchildren collecting local folklore from their parents, grandparents and older members of the community.

Can you please recommend some reading or sources on Brigid for beginners without new age spin? Happy Imbolc!

So, I realized I didn’t have a good answer to this because a lot of my own knowledge is through talking to others and reading the lore. So, I asked around was given a link to this book, The Rites of Brigid. I haven’t read it myself, though it’s now on my list, so I can’t vouch for it totally, but the very first review is from someone whose opinion I trust, so that helps. They do mention that there’s a little New Age stuff in there, which is largely unavoidable in its entirety, but overall the scholarship looks sound. You can read the review for yourself at the bottom of the page I linked. And it’s old enough that there might be a copy either at the library or at the “local university who bears the name of the city you’re in.” Idk if you’re a student there, but if you’re a student at all, you could probably get an inter-library loan for it. Cause it’s likely that, due to some of the saint talk in the book, the “large, Catholic university in the city you’re in that also has a high school with the same name” has a copy.

Today is the feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, an image of Mary venerated all over the world.

The original icon is of Greek origin and has been in Rome since the late 15th century. It is currently kept in the church of St Alphonsus, near the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.

A strange dream-I was laying in bed, just as I was actually. And a stout woman, all in black, cast into shadow like a walking silhouette, came into my room. She was wearing a thin, gossamer veil that caught the light. It was square, and reached her collarbone on every side. She came to me and dropped an identical veil over my sleeping form, covering my face. I tried to take it off, but it clung like spiderweb until it sunk into my skin. Silently she left, veil catching the light and glowing, superbly delicate, profile cast against it.

So…this is my Timeline Spread. Well..sort of. I usually just refer to it as “The Timeline”. And also, you’ll have to keep reading to see exactly how it works. It’s a lot of cards (for me, at least) and it’s best used with a lot of reflection. I do this spread with pen and paper and take plenty of notes and make plenty of plans. Google reminders are scheduled during this. If something comes up that I’m not happy with, then I’m going to want to change or avoid it at best, and if that can’t happen, then at worst I want to know how I can get out of it as unscathed as possible.

Each point on the timeline gets three cards, like so:

Card One is “Where I am at this point.”

Card Two is “Who I am at this point.”

Card Three is “What will help me most at this time.”

When writing out the cards this spread gives me, I denote them as “A1”, “B3”, “E2”, et cetera.

Each group of three cards is analyzed together and in isolation from the others, first, and I look for links between the time periods to help see where I can facilitate good events and head off the bad ones. (Good and bad being relative, of course!) I don’t force a link if there isn’t one — my main narratives are on the individual points on the timeline and the three cards that make up those results, but watching the progression of your needs and who you are can be very interesting and telling for sure.

This is honestly a LOT of information and personally, I don’t recommend trying to read for unlisted places on the timeline, however if you’re really curious about a sudden, dramatic shift between one point and the next, placing a single card to see what leads from point A to point B (or D to E or what have you) can be helpful.

(I also don’t do this spread too often either. I don’t do it on schedule, although that’s not a bad idea. I do it whenever I think it’s necessary, which is rarely more than twice a year.)
