John Boyega is a hero
John 'the truth speaker' Boyega has spoken đđżđđżđđżđđż
JOHN BOYEGA as FINN in Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi
i cannot begin to describe how much story potential we lost just by disney fucking over finn as badly as they did.
finn has, invariably, one of the most intriguing character setups in all of star wars partially because he comes from a group with no apparent identity beyond their service to the empire/first order - the stormtroopers. clearly you can take these nameless, faceless mooks and give them really compelling storylines: the clone wars is predicated on that, and they did seven seasons. there is no plausible way that anyone who really wanted to commit and tell this story just ran out of things for finn to do.
and the force awakens made finn and reyâs relationship so natural because they both start the film looking for identity beyond the confines of the roles they were bred into. it gave them a mutual father figure in han solo - a really intentional choice, given that his blood child is the one to kill him off. kylo ren, because heâs been born into the skywalker legacy, becomes a gatekeeper. he decides who does and doesnât get to participate in star wars. and when finn takes lukeâs lightsaber, kylo gets pissed - a stormtrooper with no name, a traitor to his cause, is more than capable of wielding what he believes he already owns. from a metatextual standpoint, itâs even more relevant: just look at how many white guys bitched and moaned because a Black man was playing with their toys.
so we got this really strong setup of kylo vs finn - of kylo, the person everyone assumes should be the hero based on his history, vs finn, someone who is coming into his own power without some legacy to permit him to be important. whatâs so striking about their fight is that finn has used a lightsaber for about a day and he can hold his own against kylo - kylo has to resort to dirty tactics to disarm finn, he doesnât just beat him down right off the bat. kylo clearly sees more in rey and her mysterious past than he does in finn, and that oversight should have paid off further down the line. he decides rey matters, but dismisses finn as a threat until itâs too late. this is a great fucking setup for a trilogy.
and tlj, while i appreciate it trying to do something more experimental in its approach to the politics of the star wars universe, ultimately left finn in a position where disney could easily throw his fucking plotline out altogether, which, as we know, they were happy to do all while making john boyega pretend he still mattered to the series.
I actually think Finnâs character problems didnât start with TLJ. I think it actually started with the Force Awakens. There was always this cognitive dissonance with the attitude towards Storm Troopers in Disney Star Wars. Finn should have been a bigger deal from the offset. He added humanity and individuality to the storm troopers and established that in their films they were conscripted and brainwashed child soldiers. Then the rest of the film has the heroes casually kill them like they did before. Finn should have been the Martin Luther King of storm troopers. Should have had a desire to liberate the other storm troopers. Yet in the end thatâs not what happened.Â
Finn John Boyega Jedi Knight!
Will I ever get over the fact that Star Wars sidelined it's POC cast in favor of...let's see...an abusive, imbalanced, and improperly developed ship between a grown man and a 19 year old that is mostly shipped by white racists? Will I ever get over how the trilogy had so much potential to be amazing, that all the cards for an epic story were right there...but they threw them out the window to pander to fans?
Yeah. No. Probably not. Because John Boyega deserved better. Oscaar Isaac deserved better. Kelly Marie Tran deserved better.
Honestly? John Boyega has every right to snap at Disney and the racists assholes that worked in the sequels. They were awful to him, they butchered his character and destroyed every single drop of enthusiasm he had when he was hired and for what?? To make r*ylo happen?? To make us feel bad for kyle?? To give him a "redemption arc"? They did him wrong and they did it on purpose, let's never forget that
âIâm the only cast member who had their own unique experience of that franchise based on their race. Letâs just leave it like that. It makes you angry with a process like that. It makes you much more militant; it changes you. Because you realise, âI got given this opportunity but Iâm in an industry that wasnât even ready for me.â Nobody else in the cast had people saying they were going to boycott the movie because [they were in it]. Nobody else had the uproar and death threats sent to their Instagram DMs and social media, saying, âBlack this and black that and you shouldnât be a Stormtrooper.â Nobody else had that experience. But yet people are surprised that Iâm this way. Thatâs my frustration.â
JOHN BOYEGAÂ for British GQ (October 2020)
I wasnât going to say any more but fuck it, I hope you racist pieces of shit obsessed with Rey sucking Kyleâs dick understand that when John talks about the racism he endured during his time in Star Wars, heâs talking about you. Heâs not just talking about the white fanboys that tried to boycott, heâs talking about each and every one of you, whether it was harrassing him on Twitter (none of us forgot that little campaign yâall lead after he dared to make a joke about two fictional characters fucking) or otherwise just making it hell to be a Black fan of Star Wars, heâs talking about yâall. Remember that next time yâall wanna act like yâall are down with the cause the next time BLM starts trending, remember that the next time another Black actor comes forward about the racism treatment they recieved from the fandom their show or movie is a part of.
Yâall are fucking demonic and I truly hope you go back to hel where yâall truly belong.
look, from a simple âi understand narrative storytellingâ, it was crystal clear that the force awakens was setting up a trilogy with a finnrey endgame, rey training with the jedi, and finn discovering he is force sensitive (and training too). they were written as co-protagonists, with both of them wielding luke bloody skywalkerâs lightsaber to fight with.Â
finn went from being not the âsecond most important characterâ but the joint first most important character in that trilogy to being cast aside completely in film two. the finnrey seeds which had absolutely been sown, the finn being force sensitive seeds that had also been sown, rey and finn both having reasons to take on kylo ren were all abandoned. the narrative storytelling that the force awakens set up was put aside in the last jedi to start a mess of a âredemption arcâ for the white dude.Â
john boyega isnât just right in saying finn was pushed aside, heâs right in saying that disney entirely fucked him over. they removed all nuance from finn and gave it to the crusty white kylo ren - which is even more insane when you remember finn has arguably the most interesting back story in the entire trilogy. stolen by the first order as a baby, brainwashed and trained into being a stormtrooper, fights for his own decisions and conscience because heâs a good person, leaves the stormtroopers, joins the resistance, and is force bloody sensitive. how on earth do you look at all that back story in the force awakens and go ânah, that character isnât interestingâ. PARDON ME?!?!
it makes me so sad that this role which should have been a dream turned into a nightmare for john. it makes me so sad knowing all the kids who finally saw themselves represented in the star wars universe with finn, who deserved so so much better. and it makes me so sad that this deeply nuanced, kind hearted character of finn was thrown aside like garbage for a âwhite redemption arcâ that frankly didnât make sense and nobody wanted. john boyega deserved fucking better. heâs right to say what heâs saying. and anyone who thinks heâs talking bullshit, unplug your head from you ass and donât even get me started on the racial discrimination in marketing such as diminishing the size of his character in posters for china. disney fucked him over and in doing so fucked up what could and should have been such a good trilogy. and it makes me so sad and so fucking angry.
John Boyega: *calling out the racism of both the film industry and its consumers*
Disney trying to drown him out by dropping mandalorian news immediately after:
i didn't even think about it until people started pointing it out on twitter but isn't it an incredible coincidence that disney released the news about the mandalorian season 2 on the same day john boyega called them out on their shitty treatment of him in the star wars films during his GQ interview?
âWhat I would say to Disney is do not bring out a black character, market them to be much more important in the franchise than they are and then have them pushed to the side. Itâs not good. Iâll say it straight up.â
In this house we recognize John Boyegaâs completely valid experience in the Star Wars films. He and other POC were completely sidelined and given less effort, attention, and depth than other white characters. His anger is fully justified and heâs STILL respectful while expressing it. LISTEN TO HIM.
Finn deserved better.
