Its totally unfair how amazing you are at your sketches and your work and detail is just phenomenal! How did you get to this point? I know you had to have practiced, but what kind of practice do you put in? I can only hope to be as good as you, but I’s love some pointers on how to get going on practicing and making myself better!
Thanks! Making me feel like hot shit yo haha
as for getting to this point, like u said, i got to this point by practice. started out by imitating my favorite artists/art styles and failing miserably at that, but it gave me the drive to keep on drawing at least. Most people that want to get into art start drawing for a bit but then quickly get discouraged and stop once they see how crappy their art looks. i was kind of a mix of “delusional about the quality of her art” and “turbo fangirl mode” so i never really hit that stage while i was starting out.
there really wasn’t a moment when it all clicked together and i started drawing better, more of a gradual realization that my process was all wrong and the steady course correcting that came after that. the best i can explain it is that I focused more on “how do I draw?” more than “how do I draw a person” or “how do I draw a dog?” or “how do I draw a house?”- using the same process for everything I draw instead of each little thing having its own process. Also, contrary to what most people think, art isn’t always powered by talent or inspiration handed down to you by your muse at the right place at the right time. it’s still a technical skill that has to be mastered. There are rules and problem solving involved and tons of hard work. you still gotta learn your fundamentals (color theory, design, anatomy, perspective, rendering, light, etc.) before you can fuck around with them.
for now id say just focus on what you like to draw and go from there. seek out pieces from your favorite artists/art styles and try to study what makes them appealing to you. is it the line art, coloring, style, composition, design etc you’re into? copy that. practice until you get it. it may seem like bad advice to take ideas (read: steal) from other artists but i bet those very artists would have done the same in your position or are still doing it to this day. one of my profs from art college said something that still sticks with me: the best artists out there steal all the time, they’ve just become good enough to cover up their tracks and make it into something that SEEMS original.
another tip would be to seek out resources on the internets like videos, painting tutorials, brush sets, palettes, pdfs, most of them can be had for free if you can find them. deviantart has a ton of downloadable stuff. conceptart.org has a lot of advice from working professionals. id even add try studying comics, TV shows or movies for composition, color, costuming etc etc as well. half of getting better at art is being able to observe the world around you and looking at your art with a critical eye. in art the big picture is still important but imo it’s the little details that can make a piece of art go from good to great and you learn to add those little details the more you observe things.
