“You never know dear, how much I love you. Please don’t take my sunshine away,” Veronika sang softly, her newborn son’s head resting against her chest. His tiny hand gripped her finger as she placed a soft kiss on his head. “I promise when we get home I’ll play you a version of that song by someone who can really sing,” Ronnie said quietly. “Your Mom is a much better dancer than she is a singer…” Mom. She was a mom. It was such a strange thing to think about, one Ronnie was still having difficulty wrapping her brain around. A soft knock at the door pulled Ronnie from her thoughts as she looked over and smiled at the familiar face.
“Come in,” Ronnie insisted, doing her best to sit up without disturbing Nathan sleeping. “Though I warn you, one look at this kid and you might never leave.”
It was all she could do to smile, be polite. Veronika was blood, and there was no doubt that the child she held in her arms was now the crown jewel of the entire Auditore family; as Fiore studied the child, however, all she could see from the doorway was a gigantic liability. Where others saw the most precious blessing that could be bestowed, she simply saw a gigantic blow to the integrity of the empire everyone worked so hard to build... a weakness that she was sure no one knew exactly how to protect.
A waste of valuable resources.
Fiorenza had never been, and would never be a maternal kind, as others were. Yet as she entered the room out of pure obligation, and even partial curiosity, the mask of normalcy made it impossible for anyone to tell her emotions were anything but sincere. “Well, look at you.... so maternal already.” Her voice was quiet as she smiled politely, her eyes traveling to the child in her arms, the distain at the sight something she found herself physically swallowing.
“Look at you, the newest member of the family...” she cooed, although the sound of her own voice made her grateful that Richie was nowhere to be found, surely he’d mock her forever for such a tone. “You must be thrilled, Ronnie... he’s lovely.”
