𝐀𝐍 𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐋𝐄 𝐀 𝐃𝐀𝐘 𝐊𝐄𝐄𝐏𝐒 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐃𝐎𝐂𝐓𝐎𝐑 𝐀𝐖𝐀𝐘. A silly saying. What about . . . a date a week leaves the knees feeling weak? Even sillier. It was a terrible rhyme — but Marjorie Elsa Dutton had never really been particularly good at rhymes or poems. She certainly enjoyed them. Enjoyed the romance of them. Lately, she had been particularly enjoying the romance of one Luke Bartley; and it was because of him she found herself feeling awfully poetic of late. Sweet lords above, she felt positively giddy, like her blood was made of something effervescent. She would've kicked herself for it, had she actually rushed into this head first. But she hadn't — for once ( as much as Spencer begged to differ ). Marge had allowed Luke to court her with the patience of a man who had all the time in the world and the persistence of one who refused refusal. She had been wary at first; the hopeless romantic in her had been burned before, but then his efforts had charmed her more than she dared voice. He had worn her down the good old fashioned way; showing up at the nurse’s station with ridiculous excuses and that lopsided grin, finding reasons to linger in corridors he had no business walking. Most prominently of all, he made her laugh. Gods, he made her laugh so hard her cheeks ached and she felt as though she carried the sun in her chest. Marge had made him work for it; cheek kiss on the first date ( not counting his stupidly smooth move that still made her knees falter ), a chaste press of lips on the second, and only on the fifth had she finally let the dam break. And break it had. Incandescent. Devastating. All the melodies of the night sang in her skin for days after; the melody of her name on his lips, his name on hers, and that damn song. The thought of its sensual chords evoked memories of his breath warm against her collarbone, her own mouth brushing reverent worship across his skin. It made her warm. Hot. Dangerously hot. Still, she had hummed it absently every day since.
Tonight was the sixth date. A double date, no less, with his twin and their partner at Driftmark’s, where Kai would take the stage. She had known Kai Bartley as an attending; brilliant at their job, kind and funny in equal measure, infinitely understanding without making you feel patronised. She had never known them beyond the cold fluorescents of St. Harrenhal. This was different, personal. Tonight felt like a milestone, an important step forward; a sacred glimpse into Luke's family. It was intimate in a way that made her pulse quicken even as his hand rested softly at the small of her back when they entered Driftmark's. The establishment welcomed them into its amber embrace; the air warm and suffused with scents of food and drink, candles scattered across tables like flickering constellations, a steady din of laughter and conversation, clinking glasses and scuffle of shoes. Mysaria had already claimed a booth facing the stage, and the three occupied it with easy, familiar comfort as they waited for Kai to emerge upon the stage. Marge ordered a glass of rosé; its pink blush mirroring the heat that kept threatening to rise in her cheeks whenever Luke looked at her too long, whenever the arm draped around her shoulders tightened to draw her ever nearer the solid breadth of him. She melted into him naturally, inevitably, like she had always been made to fit right there. Gods, she was sweet on him. She had been swept by an unrestrained fit of laughter at some anecdote Mysaria shared, one hand curled around the stem of her glass, the other brushing tender patterns against Luke's knee, when the lights finally dimmed.
The din of the venue softened to a hush, and Mysaria immediately leaned forward on her elbows, eyes agleam with unmistakable pride and hunger the moment Kai stepped into the spotlight. Marge’s gaze lingered, indulgently, on Luke a moment longer before she reluctantly turned towards the stage. Genuine curiosity and excitement lit her expression, raising the corners of her dimpled smile high. She wanted to see this side of Kai. Wanted to know the person who had helped shape the man currently holding her so very sweetly.
The first few notes were all it took; they slid into her ear as though a key turning a lock. The exact same chords. The same slow, sensual melody that had enveloped her and Luke in the dark. It was the song that had taken residence in Marge since they had entwined; humming under her breath while she charted, threading treacherously through her thoughts in the late hours. It played in her until her mind was a reel of his hands, his mouth, the low sound he made when she kissed the spot beneath his ear. And now she learned it belonged to Kai. Kai. His twin. Marge's smile was first to falter, the blood draining from her face as realisation truly struck her. Then the mortification flared like wildfire, roaring up her throat and flooding her cheeks in a ridiculous, blazing red she couldn’t possibly hide. Her fingers tightened around Luke's knee as she turned to him with wide eyes that held both horror and incredulous amusement.
❛ This song— ❜ She stammered, a breathless, disbelieving laugh fleeing her before she could stop it, ❛ you played this song when we—Luke, your twin wrote the soundtrack to us— ❜ Marge buried her face against his shoulder for half a second, shoulders trembling with stifled, embarrassed laughter, the sound muffled but threaded with warmth. When she lifted her head again, her eyes were bright with amusement and the helpless, smitten fondness she could no longer pretend wasn’t there. ❛ Gods almighty. ❜
