ursa was really a bad mom. yeah, she loved both of her kids, but did she treat them even half way as equals? no. in fact, she always treated zuko more special because of the way ozai treated him, but she tended to shun azula's abilities because ozai praised them. in her attempt to build zuko up due to ozai, she tore azula down the same way.
HEADCANONS 02. // A DRAGONS WRATH
URSA IS A DIRECT DESCENDENT of Avatar Roku, a powerful fire bender, and the previous avatar. she is a woman with power and fire running through her veins. neither of her parents were fire benders, but she inherited her grandfathers' skills. she was a powerful fire bender in her own right, and was quick to put any in their place if they questioned her, especially in the highly challenging royal family. ursa earned respect quite quickly, and was known for her quick temper.
of course, this had to settle down once she fell pregnant with zuko and later gave birth to him, but she was still quick witted and made sure all knew her skills never left her. she could never use it against her husband or her father - in - law, however, had she made the wrong move, her kids would be without a mother, and her family back in hira'a could have been in danger. ultimately, her kids ended up without her, but, they were safe as far as she knew.
sometimes she wishes she had used her skills to defend zuko when she could have, perhaps things would've turned out differently.

HEADCANON 01. // THE PROVERBIAL FIREBALL
Ursa, before, during, and after her marriage to Ozai, was always a proverbial fireball. She spoke without regard of how others felt, whether it be in defense of her children, her family, or her own being. She had always had very strong opinions, and she wasn’t afraid to yell them at the top of her lungs.
On more than one occasion, she and Ozai had verbal spats between themselves in front of servants, political officials, and even their children, though Ursa always tried to have them ushered away. She had the temper of a true firebender, and while it did impress Azulon, and Ozai as well, the latter would always find it grating she didn’t obey him like everyone else did.
Even after leaving behind the capital, she continued to bring about verbal fire wherever she went. She had become known in Shu Jing rather quickly as a kind lady, but possessed a bite if she witnessed some sort of wrongdoing. Any of the trickster little kids would avoid her at all costs– she wasn’t afraid to drag them straight to their parents.

"Is it any wonder that you fell into my hands? Only a god can tame a dragon after all."
She contemplates make a sarcastic come back— Was he calling himself a god? Even Agni themself was laugh at this lowly second born son claiming to be a god. There was no denying that Ursa had the heat of a dragon in her belly, and the authoritative personality to command the respect dragons once did. But Ozai? A god amongst benders? How silly.
Either way, she lifted her chin, eyes half lidded in amusement as she watched him. “I remember a time when you threatened to have me killed.” she replied, her voice absent of malice or spite. “And I told you that no other woman could produce an heir as powerful as I could. Are you sure it isn’t the dragon who tamed the Gods’ wrath?”

"So often do I hear others speak of your regal lady like charms. If only they knew how furious you appear, panting and out of breath in the late hours of the night."
“Mustn’t we all save face in front of our adoring public?” came her simple reply, eyes trained on her embroidery hoop– the tail of a brilliant ruby dragon just coming into reality. “If I weren’t mistaken, I always seemed to see a smirk on your face as proverbial fire spat from my mouth.“ her attention broke as she turned her head to gaze at Ozai, a smirk adorning her face in turn.

he never saw his mother that sad – never saw her eyes glimmer with tears and show SORROW like they did right now and when her hand reached out to stroke his head and she said those words, Zuko felt as if a world was shattered. Lu Ten was like a BROTHER to him, someone he looked up to and someone he wanted to be like when he grew up … ❝he … he promised to tell me about the Siege once he returned! he promised to teach me! he… he can not be GONE❞
”I’m so sorry, Zuko.” Ursa murmured, bringing the boy in for a tight hug. The crushing feeling in her chest was overwhelming, as if her own child was killed and she could do nothing to save him. Lu Ten was a son to her, and she a mother to him in the absence of his own. She couldn’t imagine the pain his father felt. “Your uncle will be returning home soon. The Seige has been a failure.”

“ you always, just, you never- ” —– her anger flares, spits in the gold of her eyes while fingertips crackle blue, resisting the urge to tug at her hair in frustration. just listening to her voice is infuriating ( conversations have played in her head of what she remembers her mother sounding like, but reality is so much worse ) and she fights the sparks that leap out towards the other. “ stop acting like you’re above me! stop looking down on me, i don’t want you fake pity. ”
Really, Ursa did feel quite bad for how Azula turned out; broken, uncontrollable. She was aware her disappearance played a part, did she feel bad for it? Yes. But would Azula ever accept her? Probably not. It didn’t matter though. She wasn’t here for Azulas’ sake this time. “I’m not here to give you sympathy or pity.” she began, lifting her chin. “I came to give an apology, whether you are ready to accept it or not.”

Her touch was like rain upon a fierce blaze, doing little to stop the searing hate but weakening the flames ever so much as they were beaten back. She feared for her safety? For their son’s? Forgettable Zuko might have been, but the prince had no desire to harm him, what would such a thing serve?
He let out a sigh as he thought on her words. Power, yes he wanted power. He wanted to be firelord, he wanted to be the culmination of a hundred years of war, but it was born of such deeper cravings. Ozai could still feel it, his insecurity whenever he heard his father speaking fondly of Iroh, the smile on his face as he spoke of his ‘dear’ son. What must Ozai do to see that look when father spoke of HIM? He’d spent so much of his life to become the greatest fire bender alive, but even that wasn’t enough, he named his daughter after the firelord, trained her to be a prodigy, and yet it all meant NOTHING.
“ I would never harm you, surely you know that? I just…” A wife was meant to be close to her husband, one he could admit his innermost demons to if needed, and vice versa of course. Would there be any shame in him confiding in Ursa here? Would it make his look pathetic is he told her how much he simply wanted to prove to himself that father was wrong about him? That he had always been worthy of his father love, and a sense of belonging?
No, she already had lost faith in him, that was why they were having this conversation to begin with. Somewhere along the line he had fumbled, he had made himself look feeble. There would have to be another way.
“...I just want is best for us. For our family. I will not have us be forgotten as Iroh came into his throne.” He stopped for a moment before closing his eyes, losing himself to the feeling of her flesh against his.
“ I love you. I love you far more than any lands or titles and perhaps I should rely more on your advice than I do. What is it you would want of me?”
Yes...he was right. Ozai loved her, so he wouldn’t ever hurt her, nor their son... She would continue to repeat it in her head for a moment, silence falling upon them. He was waiting for an answer, wasn’t he? But she wasn’t quite sure what to say. Stop thirsting for power? Ultimately, she knew who she had married, and she wasn’t sure if she had a right to ask so much of him.
“Just... Remember you’re still human, too.” Ursa finally said after much deliberation. It was an odd request, but, it was the first thing that came to her. “I know you want approval from your father, but, I can’t bare it if you lost yourself to this.”
Her hand fell from his face, resting at her chest a moment... before she took a bold step forward and slid her arms around his waist. She wanted the comfort of his arms, and she wanted to attempt to comfort him as well. She didn’t mean to doubt him— no, she just wanted to voice her concerns.
Her fear seemed to finally be quelled for now.
”Staying a skilled bender is also something I’d like from you.” a mere joke. Ursa had quite a bias when it came to benders. Her husband would always come out on top. “

He simply starred blankly at her for but a second. She no longer felt safe with him? How? Was he not the greatest fire bender alive? Was he not prince of the greatest nation to ever exist? Her words hurt, but he would not show any sign of weakness, especially when she already doubted his strength…much like everyone else.
“ I will be satisfied when I finally take the throne, when I finally have what should have always been mine.” He spoke, his words filled with passion, though they also held noticeable resentment as well. “You of all people should know what I am capable of. Do you not wish a better life for our children? Imagine it, Azula being fire lord one day!” A large grimace spread across his face. Yes, his dear child had no business being anything less than a princess, and one day the master of all things! Even Zuko deserved to stand in her shadow as a royal prince.
Ozai knew he would prove his father wrong, that he had always been worth the favor given to Iroh. They would all see one day, see that he was the worthy heir, that he wasn’t just a worthless second best to be discarded and forgotten about by his family.
Despite all this though, the prince’s fiery gaze cooled as he closed the distance between himself and his wife, his hands cupping her lovely face. Perhaps in her he could find some comfort, she was the only one he could ever hope to find it from. What he planned, it was the right thing, yes?
“ I am still the same man you met all those years ago. There will never be cause for you to fear me, or anyone.” He paused for but a moment. “I will not take the throne without you by my side, Ursa. Do you disapprove of my plans for the future? Speak your mind.” He would listen for now, she had earned that much from him.
She could never resist the warmth of his hands, the comfort in the absolute heat that poured out of them alluring, and safe to her. She was always comfortable when they were on her, and almost always quelled her fears.
But not this time it seemed.
“I always knew you were striving for things that were near impossible to have.” Ursa began, eyes downcasted sadly. “I loved you despite knowing how much you desired power. But, my heart breaks when I see the humanity starting to leave your eyes.” Fingers pressed gently against his cheek, her hands cold from the anxiety of this situation, as opposed to his comforting hands.
”I’m afraid I’m losing my husband to his desire for power.” she paused, eyes lifting to meet his. “I’m fearful to see how far you will go. What will you do if you no longer have use for Zuko? Or me?”
