*Currently in Hide's basement, Sky manages to manifest three rocks. One the size of a grape, the other two cherry-sized. They'll still have to work on summoning things in the right size...*

She's laughing. They've missed her laugh so much. It feels like moonlight on his skin — illuminating but never blinding, guiding without overbearing.

"If you keep stopping at every tourist trap along the way we're gonna be late for the fireworks!"

"Don't the people here deserve to know that their tourist traps are that effective? I'm sure they worked hard on them!"

The fireworks are brilliant in the sky, but they swear the ones reflected in her oak-brown eyes are brighter still.

She turns her gaze at them, and their next breath catches, lodged in his throat.

"Aren't you going to help me?"

"Huh?"

Her eyes are blue. Her eye is blue. What?

"Well don't! I don't need help!"

She's a single, massive blue eye, disconnected and floating over a rather dapper three-piece suit, just as blue as his eye. He's yelling, shutting himself away the way she did, towards the end. But she wouldn't wear a suit like that. She hates suits. She hates anything to do with formality.

This isn't her. Who is this? Why does he sound so pained?

They want to help. Why can't they help?

"This is amazing! I'm so happy for you."

She sounds genuinely delighted for the first time in months. They're just relieved, ecstatic even, that she actually picked up her phone. That she answered their text, that she agreed to a quick call.

"Yeah? I've always wanted to make a difference—"

Why can't they remember her name?

"I know! Are you sure though,—?"

Why can't they remember their own?

"I mean, yeah."

"Oh, don't sound offended. You know I'm just worried about you. Working with criminals and those sorts of people for your first job… That's throwing yourself into the deep end, y'know? You were always so good with kids, I kinda just assumed that's the kind of job you would've gone for."

The line is dead silent for a while. They inhale, sharp, like the lance that just shot through them. They hadn't meant to say it like that. Accusing.

"No, wait, I'm sorry —"

Her laugh is so pained and fake that they're already tearing up.

"I'm sorry anyway. I wish I could help you the way you need."

"Well. Unfortunately, our dear newly-employed prison therapist here can't do that without breaking the code of ethics. Sounds like a skill issue to me, honestly—"

How often did they have this conversation with her? They don't know. It got more and more frequent, towards the end. They'd apologize, heart in their hands, for being busier and busier, for having less and less time with her.

She'd laugh that same, tight laugh. Tell them she loves them, that she understands. They couldn't give her the help she needs anyway.

"Anyway, we're going to watch the fireworks this New Years, so don't forget to mark that down."

"Oh. Yeah, I took a day off just for us!"

"Eugh, employed fella over here."

"Hey, now. Someone's gotta fund all of our shenaniganery."

If she hadn't wanted to watch the fireworks with them, she could've just said so. She didn't need to ghost them quite so literally. Didn't need her last word to be something as silly as 'shenaniganery'. They hope she said something else after hanging up.

They were the one who found her first.

"Like one of those suncatchers," they once said to describe her. Something to catch the light, refracting it in a thousand rainbows, to be hung near a window and share its colours and joy with the world.

But not like this. Not like this, with her own colour drained out of her face, pale and haggard. She was draining the colour out of their life—she knew she was his everything, that they loved her — was it not enough? But no, it's never enough. Sometimes love isn't enough, and they ought to have known; they've lost so many despite love, but they always thought 'Not her, never her.'

Her body was cold when it hit the ground; they weren't close enough to catch her.

Her body was cold on the ground, her limbs scattered, his limbs disembodied, his right arm and left eye melting in a puddle—

They weren't there to stop it from happening.

They were supposed to help. It was their job to keep it from happening.

Fireworks reflected in brilliant dark irises, a blue eye floating above a three piece suit, limbs turning to liquid under a body.

Why can't they do anything right? Why couldn't they have stopped it?
