flowey got really good at hurting others. saying the right thing to demolish them, leave them scared and not a threat. because if they thought he was weak, they could hurt him, right?

odd that begetting fear was the very sin that caused him to die in the first place. odd that he’d choose to make others feel the emotion that caused the humans to strike at him in the first place.

maybe it’s just that fear was what doomed him. to afraid to disobey chara, too afraid to get the souls, too afraid to fight back… and, drawing his motivation from the same place he drew his insults, he made sure to do his best to make anyone else who faced him the one feeling that fear.

it’s cliche, but one of the few things flowey fears most, second to losing control, is that fear itself. the paralysis it leaves. the inability to help anyone, not even himself. and, of course, in the true flowey fashion, he inflicts that on everyone around him.

i think that’s why he valued chara laughing things off so much. laughter is an action, in a way. it’s not paralysis. while he froze like a deer in headlights, chara was able to shake anything terrifying off. of course he looked up to them for that.

i think that’s part of why the flowey boss fight was so… confusing. you don’t really know what to do. you just… survive. live to the next day, and if you don’t, go back and try again. but most of all, stay calm. don’t freeze, no matter how terrified you’re feeling. even locked in combat, flowey still tried to teach everyone the lessons he had to learn the hard way. and one of the most important ones forced into him was that he can’t hesitate, he can’t freeze in fear. he’s done it too much. he refuses to feel fear, now. and he refuses to freeze. because that means, undoubtedly, death.
