“ killing the monsters is the easy bit. it’s finding them that’s the hard part. ”
“...I imagine so. With no beasts to hunt out at night, it must be frustrating. Have you felt the cravings, Lady Crow...have you become drunk with blood?” Laurence cocked a curious eyebrow. It was a strange sentiment, really, and not one he was expecting...did she yet yearn for a quarry to slaughter?
“...I had a friend who became incapable of living without hunting. The world passed him by, and he couldn’t move on. In the end, he gave himself to the hunt, body and soul, at the whims of a Great One...the lengths to which hunters will go to feel that thrill...it’s truly something.”

“ you haven’t even seen my bad side yet. ”
“No...nor do I intend to, Lady Crow.” Was that...self-satisfaction in his smile? Perhaps. It was a rather unpleasant expression, though it did not seem he intended it to be as such; the simple mix of comfort and apathy left him looking as though he was mocking the very essence of human nature.
“...Do you want to show me that side of yourself? You don’t strike me as the kind of person who seeks out antagonism for no purpose. We are alike in that regard; we need not tread on each others toes without cause.”

“...Not particularly polite, is it?”
Fairly accurate, though...

...Thou wouldst understand if thou knewest the truth.
“...The truth, is it?” A curious statement, but Laurence thinks he understands where Gwyndolin speaks from.
“We all have our truths, Dark Sun -- mine is this: ‘Our eyes have yet to open.’ To live shackled to such human states as anger, as love, as sadness, prevents us from reaching the state that the Great Ones have achieved -- enlightenment, vision, insight. Perhaps I would understand...perhaps I could know of the source of rage that unites humanity. But these things would keep me human...if I am to guide others to ascension, then I will have to sacrifice such things. Perhaps, through doing so, I can help others leave behind their anger, as well.”
“It seems that even here, so many are so full of rage.” Laurence wore no expression on his face, his tired eyes not betraying his feelings on the matter even for a moment. He’d spoken to several people who had spoken similarly, of clutching to their anger, turning it into a weapon, waging wars on those who would bring them to harm...
“...It seems humanity does not change based on world of origin. But it shouldn’t have to be like this...holding such conflict in one’s heart, like a beast clawing at the bars of a cage...”
“ i’ve polished this anger and now it’s a knife. ”
“...So, you too have weaponized your rage, Dark Sun.” It didn’t sound like Laurence was making a value judgement so much as a personal note. Nodding slightly, he gave Gwyndolin a soft smile, one which revealed nothing about the way the vicar truly felt -- it was an expression of courtesy laid over a perpetually blank canvas.
“...The Great Ones have been known to be wrathful...but only at the demand of others. They respond to violence with violence, and when called upon by humans who are close to them, they will answer hateful prayers with hate. I do not believe I have ever known one to hold anger of their own, however...not on so personal a level. Not like people.” A small shrug. “Your divinity never fails to strike me as curious.”
“ i’ve polished this anger and now it’s a knife. ”
“Hm.” The hint of a hollow smile, a gentle tease of a lip’s edge rising. A humorless sound and a humorless expression, for Laurence’s eyes reflected nothing but the woman who spoke those words to him, visible in those dark, empty pools, as though they were a space left behind by an absence of love, compassion, rage, anything. Folding his hands over his lap, the vicar gave a slight shrug, his voice soft and calculated.
“...I have heard people speak of weaponizing anger before. Such a thing leads to power, at first...then to enervation. Then to death. Don’t think of yourself as stronger just because you can put some anger in your sword arm’s movements. Once that arm falls, what’s left? A void, and nothing to fill it but the dregs of a rage which has already left you...”

8. Do you genuinely want your muse to be happy? What do you think would make them most happy in life?
That is...a difficult question to answer. Laurence’s happiness, I believe, is tightly wound around his ability to reach his goals -- to achieve a higher state of being, go beyond human limits and get closer to the Great Ones who ascended so long ago. To reach such a goal may very well spell numerous tragedies on the path, tragedies which Laurence would likely see as little other than collateral damage for the greater good. The truth of the matter is that I don’t know. If it means seeing even more horror committed because of his actions, then perhaps Laurence should never be happy at all.
10. What do you love about your muse?
At my core, I’m fairly predictable -- I love characters who exemplify the capable underdog. Laurence is not a fighter, not like many in the Bloodborne universe -- he is merely a scholar who relied only on his intelligence and drive to take him where he went; with merely his mind and his charisma, he formed an entire society and religion, and razed many others. He committed horrible acts in the name of progress, but the fact that he managed this while being fairly unimpressive in the common sense is something that I am drawn to.
If you could change one event in your muse’s life (in their main or canon verse), what would you change?
Without a doubt, the decision Laurence made to leave the Institution of Byrgenwerth and Master Willem behind to experiment further with the Old Blood. Most tragic events within Bloodborne canon stem from this one decision Laurence made, a headstrong choice which plummeted entire societies into a spiral of suffering, plague, and madness. If he had been more careful, listened to his teacher, and not hurried on an ill-advised power trip, perhaps things could have been less horrible in the future.

4. If you could tell your muse one thing, what would you tell them?
I would tell him, knowing what I know about the events of Bloodborne, that through his research, he brings more suffering than good, and that he will never get what he wants if he follows the path he’s on. Funnily enough, I don’t know if Laurence would change anything about himself even if I did tell him that, even if he did know that I saw his future -- he would likely simply try to circumvent it, thinking he had that power. Nevertheless, I think it would be worth a shot.
14. How would you describe your muse to someone about to meet them, in person, for the first time?
Icy, probably. I would tell them that Laurence doesn’t have any room in his heart for feelings, or empathy; that all he cared about was learning. I would warn them not to try to force that, either -- it would be a fool’s errand to try and push Laurence out of his mindset. However, I would be remiss if I did not also mention that he is easy to talk to, and quite striking in his ability to maintain intelligent conversation.
7 and 17!
7. If you could “borrow” one aspect of your muse and apply it to yourself or your own life, what would you borrow?
By far, that would have to be Laurence’s analytical way of thinking through problems. Often, the smallest of tasks inspire anxiety in me, while Laurence is the kind of person who never allows obstacles to bar his way; if something stalls him, he finds a way around it and keeps moving, never slowing his pace or missing a beat. I kind of envy that ability to keep on truckin’, no matter what.
17. Why do you think you connect to your muse?
I have a tendency to connect to those who want to inspire greatness in the world at large, because it’s a nice dream to have; Laurence is also charismatic and cultivates faith in others to help him pursue his dreams, which is sort of what I try to put forward in myself, a sort of beautiful way of life that helps others see the possibilities available to them. Unfortunately, Laurence pushes these things quite a bit too far, and ends up being more villainous than heroic, but his bases are quite admirable from my point of view, and something that I can relate to.

[come up with your own question for the mun, regarding the muse]
✘: Who do they detest the most? Do they typically avoid this person or antagonize them?
Detest...is a strong word. To ask whether Laurence ‘detests’ someone would require first asking whether he is capable of detesting anyone at all, cold as his heart is. Laurence is a man to whom both love and hatred are long lost, supplanted by the icy machinations of a mind hellbent on development and ascension. In short, Laurence may very well be too much of a megalomaniac to properly detest anyone, caring too much about his own work to offer any energy to feeling any sort of way about others.
He does look down on people, however. People such as Lady Maria, or the hunter named Djura, who abandoned their paths because simple sentiment got in the way of their duties...Laurence cannot abide by those who allow their hearts to keep them stagnant and placid when they should be focused on personal development. He does not avoid nor antagonize such people, he simply...maneuvers around them, seeing them as insignificant.
