Let’s play the “What plant is this?” Game, Blurry photo edition! I went to my (not so local anymore) local fish store looking for new plants. They showed me this guy and I thought he was kinda cool. Told me how to care for the plant and even mentioned the name buuuuuut I completely forgot the name and would like to do some more research on the plant. So, 10 points to the person that can tell me what it is!

I recently got a bunch of plants for my aquarium, the species are: Anubias nana, Anubias congensis, Echinodorus ozelot, Echinodorus amazonicus, Echinodorus muricatus, Cryptocoryne wendtii, Cryptocoryne walkeri, Egeria densa, Bacopa monnierii, Hygrophila salicifolia, and Ludwigia repens. It's been a couple days since they were planted, and the leaves on the swords are turning yellow and the tips of the anubias' leaves are becoming clear. Are they dying? I have LEDs, should I be dosing ferts/CO2?

Anubias are relatively easy plants. Maybe the tips become clear because it needs some time to acclimate… I’d watch it and if whole leaves are looking bad, plug them out. Read more about it here. Phosphate and CO2 are not needed but do good for Anubias.
The swords all need more light than the other plants. Medium light is recommended (you can calculate your light intensity here). If you say you have LEDs, you should know how many lumen they give. With this value you can calculate the light intensity of your tank (important is also the height of the tank).
Try setting the swords into the direct light. CO2 is never wrong within a planted tank, it’s their main nutrient. Fertilizing only makes sense when you know what to do. Test your water after you made a water change. Test NO3, PO4, Fe, maybe potassium (K). After one week test again (no water change in between). The values will be lower and on that you can see what your plants actually consumed. If the value is around 0 it’s not enough. Maybe you need to dose fertilizer. This depends on which nutrients your water lack. Often it’s nitrate (NO3) or light.
Another method is to dose only small amounts and see if things get better. Make weekly water changes.

Make sure the rhizome on the anubius isn’t buried.
So the yeast is... already done in my 20g. I think? its very low output. I need to figure out why that is. On the plus side, some of my cories decided to spawn in the 47g? Idk, saw a female swimming around frantically holding eggs and there’s a couple on the walls - not going to do anything special to them now but if they do it again I may see if I can’t set the eggs up in the ten gallon.

He’s very neat! Only problem is… he’s really good at hiding. I haven’t been able to find him in the plants for like, two days, and while he’s probably okay, I really don’t want to try to chase him out for fear of stressing all my livestock. So um. Go shrimp, you hide like a champ!
I lied. He died. Fuck me and fuck delicate inverts that implode even though you do everything right.
Augh, and my fear happened. Bamboo shrimp didn’t make it. I’m at a loss. Tank params are perfect (literally like just did a water change before I put him in) drip acclimated him, happy fish, happy snails, I fed him crushed food and there’s tons of plants in the tank for him to hide in and feel safe, plus there should be plenty of micro stuff in the water column from the plants for him to feed on... Ugh. So frustrated right now I can’t even. The caresheet I found for them, which is super detailed (Here fyi: http://www.aquariumcarebasics.com/freshwater-shrimp/bamboo-shrimp/) does note they have a tendency to implode shortly after being added to tanks. Which is makes sense, being transported to the store and having to acclimate to those conditions on a thursday and then being purchased on a friday and having to acclimate AGAIN is probably stressful as fuck and delicate inverts might just not always be able to handle it. *tosses hands up* probably not buying another one as cute as I find them. I’ll just get some fucking neocaridinia shrimp

Shitty pics because this tank is awkward as fuck to get good pictures of and its still cloudy from messing with it earlier, BUT that’s not the point; the point is to show the ridiculous stupid size of these Anubias Frazeri I got today. Like, swear to god, I thought those were swords at first. How are those even anubias? I can barely deal with it.

i want to have amazon sword, ancharis, java fern, and java moss in my betta tank. what would be the best substrate to use? thanks!
So take this with a big heaping grain of salt because my planted tank journey is full of much trial and error and I’ve certainly not doing everything 100% correctly on my journey. Correct me if I’m wrong on any of this, of course.That said, I’m a fan of sand as a substrate - most fish stores sell good and, make sure its not marine sand or cichlid sand unless you really want to cultivate hard water (which for most fish, you’re not going to want to.) I believe plain on pool filter sand works too, but you have to rinse it a lot to get particulates out.Another great option is caribsea eco-complete, if you’re wanting a substrate that is really good for plants and you like the gravel look a little better. You can layer them too, if you’d like, though some granules of the eco-complete will squirrel their way to the top.IMHO avoid gravel (bar stuff like the eco complete) it traps waste far too easily, isn’t good for some fish, and some plants don’t get rooted as well, especially large-grain gravel.The sword is going to be a root-feeder, so when you plant it you’ll want to get something called a root tab; its a little hard fertilizer disc that you bury under the plant that way it can get nutrients through its roots instead of just the water column.Anacharis, being a stem plant, is going to do okay without root tabs though. Realistically you could probably float it and it’d be fine, as long as you have enough substrate to bury the stem in and it doesn’t float off, it’ll be good.Java fern *will* grow in substrate but its like Anubias and Bucephalandra; you have to make sure you don’t bury the rhizome in the substrate, just the roots. Most people just tie it to rocks or driftwood; it’ll root into the driftwood eventually and be perfectly happy living like that.Same goes for java moss; mosses don’t need substrate at all and most folks just attach them to hard decor in the tank; either by tying it on or using a fine net.
Also, I picked up two GIGANTIC Anubias frazeri from the LFS; pics once the tank clears up, I fixed my powerhead and it blew stuff everywhere). A hint: They reach almost to the top of my 47g corner tank :O

Okay yeah, this diffusor isn’t working. Guess I shouldn’t have expected much for five bucks.Pressure in the system is up to like 2.5 kgm/cm2 and that should be PLENTY to push out bubbles. Of to the store!
well I’ve definitely got a reaction in my bottles but I’m getting no bubbles out of my diffuser yet...
Got my c02 setup. lets see how this goes...
